New Net Terrance Mann returns home to a very different Brooklyn

New York Post16-07-2025
LAS VEGAS — For Terance Mann — both the newest Net and the oldest — coming to Brooklyn isn't just a trade. It's a homecoming.
Mann was born and raised in Brooklyn, growing up in the proverbial shadow of what would become Barclays Center, where he'll be playing this season. With his mother — who was a local basketball coach — he walked around Flatbush & Atlantic as a child, excited about the coming of the team he'll now suit up for.
'Great. Man, it's just crazy to think about,' said Mann, 28. 'I grew up around there. I remember being little. My mom was (coach at) LIU Brooklyn.
'I used to walk around the area before Barclays was even built. I used to be around there, walking around, always asking, like, 'What are they building here?' My mom's like 'I think Jay-Z is bringing the Nets from New Jersey.' That was the talk in Brooklyn at the time. So, it's just crazy to be able to see it.'
Many players used to come to the sport through their fathers, but times are changing. In the case of Mann, it was through his mother, Daynia La-Force.
La-Force played for Georgetown and in 1995 became an assistant coach at LIU Brooklyn, with the Blackbirds playing at the Paramount Theater just blocks from what would become Barclays Center.
The next year, Mann was born, and grew up in the neighborhood.
'I lived in New York till I was 11, and then I moved to Massachusetts,' said Mann.
'(I remember) just walking around. I went to school around the area. I would always go to Juniors, get some cheesecake; just different random stuff, playing with friends, walking around with my little brother while my mom was in practice, and just being at LIU Brooklyn a lot. Those are really my main memories.'

Now the 6-foot-5, 215-pound Mann will get to create a whole different set of Brooklyn memories.
After averaging 7.7 points and shooting 36.8 percent from deep in 67 games last season — split between the Clippers and Hawks — the Nets traded for him essentially as a salary dump.
With Brooklyn GM Sean Marks looking to weaponize his cap space, he traded for Michael Porter Jr. to get Denver's unprotected 2032 draft pick, and took Mann to get a first-round pick last month that became rookie Drake Powell.

With three years and $47 million left on his deal, Mann will be out to remind people that he can be more than just a salary dump.
Mann can clearly play. He averaged a career-high 10.8 points in 2021-22 for a Clippers team that made the Western Conference finals, and started 71 of 75 games for them two years later.
Now the much-needed grown-up in the room for a young Nets squad with a league-record five first-round rookies, can he lead?

'For sure. I'm the oldest on the team. Yeah, so definitely,' said Mann. 'It's definitely new for me coming from the Clippers, where guys were a lot older than me. So, it's an adjustment for me, for sure. But I'm excited to embrace the journey, taking these guys under my wing, showing them how to be professionals.'
Cam Thomas is a restricted free agent but presumptive starter at off-guard, while Porter will get the nod at one forward spot. Mann can get minutes at the two or three. But with the Nets having a plethora of rookies to groom on the perimeter — Powell, Egor Demin, Ben Saraf — Mann can help mentor all of them.
'Just lead as best I can, that's really one of the main focuses I'm going to try and take on with this group,' said Mann. 'And then on the court, whatever coach wants me to do, I'm going to do. I've always been that type of player. So just being excited for it.'

Nets receive C- from ESPN for 2025 NBA offseason moves

The Brooklyn Nets have been making some moves throughout the 2025 NBA offseason as they are looking to improve from a 26-56 record following the 2024-25 campaign. Two of the biggest moves that Brooklyn made this summer was trading for forward Michael Porter Jr. and trading for forward Terance Mann and the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft that became forward Drake Powell. Some pundits didn't like the Nets' offseason. "Given the Nets' commanding position as the only team with more than $30 million in cap space this summer, their return has been underwhelming," ESPN's Kevin Pelton wrote when explaining his grade for Brooklyn's offseason moves. Pelton gave the Nets a C- grade for the moves that they made and it seems that most around the league were not impressed by Brooklyn trading for Porter. "Brooklyn did net a 2032 unprotected first-rounder from Denver and can hope to rehabilitate Michael Porter Jr.'s value," Pelton continued. "The Nets also landed the No. 22 pick with Terance Mann prior to the draft, but keeping all five first-round picks and using them largely on players whose games don't seem complementary was confusing. Brooklyn still can create $20-plus million in cap space, and we'll see whether additional deals materialize before training camp." Pelton makes some valid criticisms of the Nets' offseason, especially when it comes to how much cap space they had during a summer in which few teams had enough money to offer free-agents more than the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception (NTMLE), valued at $14.1 million for the 2025-26 season. Brooklyn did not use their cap space to go after available talent, but rather rented out their cap space to other teams in exchange for players and/or draft picks. For example, the Nets gave up $15.5 million to take on Mann along with the 22nd overall pick and essentially used about $17 million worth of space to take on Porter, including having to part ways with forward Cam Johnson, who was coming off a career year. With that being said, Porter and Mann are two players who can help the Nets next season on the floor and getting two first-round picks along the way could be part of the plan for general manager Sean Marks and the front office.

Sixers legend gives statement on Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took over the NBA in the 2024-25 season. He led the league in scoring, took home the MVP, Western Conference finals MVP, and finals MVP awards, led the Thunder to their first championship in franchise history, and announced himself as the clear best player in the league. Gilgeous-Alexander has thrown the Thunder on his back and has taken the league by storm at this stage of his career. He deserves a lot of credit for being able to lead OKC to the mountaintop as he delivered a big performance on the game's biggest stage. Philadelphia 76ers legend Allen Iverson delivered his own statement on Gilgeous-Alexander as he continues to praise the talent coming into the league: You have to practice to become whatever you're trying to become in life. You think Shai didn't practice? Become the MVP, the best player in the world? You have to practice. Iverson was able to win the MVP award in 2001 and lead the Sixers to the finals before they fell to the Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal led Los Angeles Lakers. He was an elite scorer during his time and has his number retired at the Wells Fargo Center. The Thunder are likely to do the same when the time comes for Gilgeous-Alexander.

Luka Doncic agrees to a contract extension through 2028 with the Lakers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, US$165 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, bypassing a chance at free agency next summer to build a long-term future with his new team. The deal keeps Doncic with Los Angeles through 2028. The Slovenian superstar had a player option for the 2026-27 season under his previous contract. A person with knowledge of the deal confirmed the terms to The Associated Press on Saturday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Lakers don't publicly announce the details of contracts. 'Excited to keep working to bring championships to L.A. and make Laker Nation proud,' Doncic wrote on social media. 'Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.' The Lakers acquired Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks last February in a seismic trade for Anthony Davis . The five-time all-NBA selection and a five-time all-star averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game last season while teaming up with LeBron James for 50 victories and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Los Angeles lost to Minnesota in the first round, but Doncic enjoyed his first months in Hollywood enough to commit to the Lakers. He will return this fall alongside James, who will begin his unprecedented 23rd NBA season. Doncic's growing comfort with the Lakers was already obvious in his off-season activity. He played a significant role in Los Angeles' successful bids to sign Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, persuading the two veterans to team up for the upcoming season. Doncic's extensive regimen of off-season conditioning work has also been well-documented after the Mavericks' questions about his physical commitment to the sport reportedly played a role in his shocking departure from Dallas. ___ AP NBA:
