Joao Moreira jumps aboard Francis Lui's Packing Angel in search of third Hong Kong Derby win
Three jockeys have enjoyed a pair of BMW Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) successes in the past decade, but its Brazilian superstar Joao Moreira who looks best placed to chase a third victory in the hallowed contest at Sha Tin on Sunday.
While Zac Purton is in the final stages of his return from injury and Hugh Bowman rides outsider Lo Rider, Moreira joins forces with one of the more-fancied chances in the Francis Lui Kin-wai-trained Packing Angel.
A close fourth behind Rubylot in the Classic Cup (1,800m) after three straight wins at 1,400m, Packing Angel – a son of Melbourne Cup winner Shocking – looks well equipped to run the 2,000m of the Derby and Moreira should be able to find a prominent position with cover from gate six.
'I hope in his last run he learned a little bit more and Joao also knows him [now],' said Lui of Packing Angel, who was ridden by Moreira for the first time in the Classic Cup.

'He's a good horse. He only had six runs before the Classic Cup and he just went straight from 1,400m to 1,800m, which is a little bit much for a young horse.'
While Moreira enjoyed Derby success in 2017 with Rapper Dragon and 2021 with Sky Darci, Lui will chase a second win in five years after snaring the 2020 edition of the race with the great Golden Sixty.
'It's the owner's dream for their four-year-old horses. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance and it's a very special race. Hopefully, I can win it again this year,' Lui said.
While Packing Angel is Lui's leading chance in a race where the David Hayes-trained Rubylot is expected to lead the market, the veteran handler will also be represented by Cap Ferrat and Steps Ahead.
Cap Ferrat will be ridden by Craig Williams and Lyle Hewitson pilots Steps Ahead for the 66-year-old.
'[Cap Ferrat has] drawn barrier two, which is a good draw. The connections expected it, they're happy. I think he has a chance,' said Lui of his son of Snitzel, who finished ninth from gate 10 in the Classic Cup.
'He had a bad draw and he had to use him a little bit more in front last time. It's much easier to relax him from gate two. Hopefully, we can find a good position.
'[Steps Ahead is] an honest horse and he's in good form. He always tries hard and you never know.'
Moreira, who jets into Hong Kong for the third time this season, will be busy on the Derby undercard, jumping aboard The Heir, Packing Hermod, Island Breezes, Parterre, Everyone's Star, Master Trillion and Pakistan Legacy.
After piloting Packing Hermod to victory on international day in December, he fittingly partners Lui's four-year-old in Sunday's Class Two Rapper Dragon Handicap (1,400m).

Argentina's Thiago Almada to sign with Atletico Madrid
Argentina's Thiago Almada to sign with Atletico Madrid Reports say Thiago Almada is set to remain with the Spanish side for the next five years. File photo: Reuters Spanish football club Atletico Madrid announced an agreement with Brazilian outfit Botafogo to sign 2022 World Cup winner Thiago Almada. "Our club and the Brazilian side have reached an agreement, pending confirmation once the player passes the required medical examination and signs the contract," the La Liga outfit posted on social media. The 24-year-old Argentinian spent the second half of last season on loan at Lyon, where he scored two goals and laid on five assists in 20 appearances in all competitions for the French club. Almada has 10 caps for his country, and was part of their World Cup-winning squad in Qatar. He also represented Argentina in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The right-footed attacking midfielder came through the ranks at local side Velez Sarsfield, where he made his professional debut in 2018 at the age of 17. He joined MLS side Atlanta in 2022, being voted best rookie in the league after his first season. Almada's form earned him a move to Botafogo last summer. He made 26 appearances for the Rio de Janeiro-based club, winning the Brazilian league and Copa Libertadores, before heading off on loan to Lyon in January. (AFP)

Hong Kong defender targets historic win to break 40-year drought against China
Leon Jones has urged Hong Kong to finish their East Asian Championship campaign in historic style when they meet China on Tuesday. Hong Kong were rigid and determined in a 2-0 loss to hosts South Korea on Friday, three days after failing to do themselves justice in a heavy 6-1 defeat by Japan. Centre-back Jones credited a change of structure for 'making us more competitive' and said a first meaningful meeting with the Chinese since 2022 was 'a chance, against good opposition, to show what we can do'. Hong Kong beat China 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly on New Year's Day last year, but May 19 marked the 40th anniversary of the city team's only competitive success against their mainland rivals: a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in Beijing. 'A lot of people feel strongly about the Hong Kong team, and China is a big derby game; a big rivalry,' Jones said. Pedro brace sends Chelsea into Club World Cup final
Pedro brace sends Chelsea into Club World Cup final Joao Pedro refused to celebrate after scoring against his childhood club Fluminense. Photo: Reuters New signing Joao Pedro scored twice on his first start as Chelsea eased to a 2-0 win over Fluminense to seal a spot in the Club World Cup final. The Brazilian forward opened the scoring in lethal fashion in the 18th minute of the last-four clash at the MetLife Stadium and struck again shortly before the hour mark as Chelsea set up a showdown with either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday's final. Signed from Brighton and Hove Albion last week for a reported US$79 million, the 23-year-old cut short a holiday and made his debut off the bench in the quarter-final win over Palmeiras. He was then given his first Chelsea start up front in place of the suspended Liam Delap. Pedro refused to celebrate after either goal against the club with whom he started his career and made 36 top-team appearances before moving to England with Watford in 2020. The result ends Fluminense's impressive run at the tournament after the 2023 Copa Libertadores winners held Borussia Dortmund in the group stage, beat Inter Milan in the last 16 and knocked out Manchester City's conquerors Al-Hilal in the quarter-finals. With their exit go the prospects of a South American winner of the first 32-team Club World Cup, while Chelsea claimed back-to-back victories against Brazilian opposition to reach the final. As always seemed most likely, the trophy will be claimed by one of Europe's superpowers, with the final now guaranteed to be between two of the last five winners of the Uefa Champions League. "It is a great achievement. It has been a fantastic season – top four in the league, (winning) the Conference League and now in the final in this competition. We are so, so happy," Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said. "Now finally it is the last game of the season, we can say that, and hopefully we can win the tournament." Fluminense coach Renato Portaluppi had described his team as the "ugly duckling" of the tournament due to the enormous difference between their budget and those of the other three remaining sides. This game ultimately proved to be a step too far for their team, captained by 40-year-old former Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva. "This was a wonderful Club World Cup," said Portaluppi. "There is no crying over spilled milk now. We wanted to get to the final for our fans but we leave with our heads held high, and go back to our reality stronger now than we were before," he added.
