A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, leading to Tsunami warnings in Japan.
A chilling prediction made years ago in a Japanese manga is back in the spotlight after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday. The quake triggered tsunami waves that reached parts of Japan, just weeks after people pointed out that manga artist Ryo Tatsuki, also dubbed as New Baba Vanga, had warned of a disaster in July 2025.
As news of the earthquake spread, attention turned to Tatsuki's manga Watashi ga Mita Mirai (The Future I Saw), which was first published in 1999. Many fans believe that it has accurately predicted past disasters. The manga is known for referencing real-life events like the deaths of Princess Diana and Freddie Mercury, the COVID-19 outbreak and most famously, the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
This year, several fans of Tatsuki's manga had flagged a warning mentioned for July 2025, with many speculating that something major could happen on July 5. As the date came and went without any incident, most people dismissed the buzz and moved on. But now, after Wednesday's strong earthquake and resulting tsunami alerts, discussions around the manga have picked up again. Many are wondering if the prediction was just off by a few weeks.
'Not the exact date, but you have to respect Ryo Tatsuki," someone else wrote.

'How did New Baba Vanga, Ryo Tatsuki, predict a mega Tsunami for July 2025? If you're on the West Coast, GET AWAY FROM THE WATER," a person warned.
How did New Baba Vanga, Ryo Tatsuki 'Sure, it reminds me of Ryo Tatsuki's prediction in his manga. Even if the place and date aren't exact, it's crazy. It's like Baba Vanga's predictions for 2025," read another comment.

Massive Earthquake In Russia
The earthquake, described as the strongest in the region since 1952, hit around 125 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city in Russia's Far East. According to the US Geological Survey, it was a shallow quake that occurred at a depth of 19.3 km. It revised the magnitude up from 8 earlier.
Soon after, tsunami waves between 3 to 4 metres (10–13 feet) were recorded along parts of Russia's Kamchatka coast.
The tremors and waves set off tsunami alerts across Japan's Pacific coastline. Japan's Meteorological Agency issued warnings that waves up to 3 metres (10 feet) could hit coastal areas. So far, waves measuring up to 30 centimetres (one foot) have hit the main northern island of Hokkaido, broadcaster NHK reported.
BREAKING Precautionary Measures At Fukushima Nuclear Plant
According to Reuters, tsunami sirens rang out in coastal towns along Japan's Pacific shoreline as officials urged residents to move to higher ground for safety. Footage from NHK showed people in Hokkaido gathering on rooftops under tents while fishing boats moved out to sea as a safety measure. Reuters reported.
TEPCO, the operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant, confirmed that workers were evacuated as a precaution. The site had suffered a meltdown in 2011 during a deadly tsunami. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi later said there were no injuries, damages or irregularities reported at any nuclear facility.
Authorities in both Russia and Japan remain on high alert. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the Russian city closest to the epicentre, panic took over as people rushed out of their homes without shoes or outerwear, according to reports from Tass.
The strong tremors caused furniture to topple, mirrors to shatter and cars to sway on the streets. Balconies on several buildings were seen shaking while parts of the Kamchatka region also experienced power cuts and mobile network disruptions.
On social media, videos have captured the intensity of the earthquake, showing shaking buildings in Russia and evacuation efforts along Japan's coastline.

While Japan recorded only small tsunami waves and no visible damage, the government said it set up a task force for information gathering and response in case of any emergency.
