Police Vandalise 30 Trucks In Kolkata Over Parking Issue, 3 Suspended
Tensions flared in Kolkata's New Alipore after truck owners' association accused the police of vandalizing at least 30 trucks over a parking issue without any prior notice.
Kolkata Police said that three personnel were suspended in this case.
Pankaj Kumar, head of the Alipore Truck Owners Association, stated that no prior notice was issued by the police regarding this matter.
"This has been done by New Alipore Police. We received a call yesterday and we sent driver immediately. As soon as they went ahead to move the vehicles, they were beaten up. You can see the damage they did to these vehicles. They said not to park vehicles here. After protests, they sent us a letter asking us to park the vehicles here and not on the main road. There is not enough space at the siding to park a loaded truck there...The Police are not cooperating with us. They had not given us any notice beforehand, Kumar told ANI.
"We were only told two days ago not to park the trucks here as it is causing difficulty for the ambulance as there is a hospital here...30-35 trucks have been vandalised...," he further said.
Earlier in West Bengal, left-wing parties' trade unions staged a 'Bharat Bandh' and alleged that the central government had been pushing economic reforms that weakened workers' rights.
10 central trade unions had called the Bandh.
Defying police presence, members of the Left parties' union entered Jadavpur railway station in West Bengal to block the railway tracks, marking their protest against the central government's "pro-corporate" policies. Left parties' unions also took out a foot march in Jadavpur.
A bus driver said, "These people are saying the right thing (referring to the 'Bharat Bandh'), but we have to do our work. We are workers, so we support (the 'Bandh')... We are wearing it (helmet) for protection in case something happens."
Under the 'Bandh', sectors such as state-run public transport, government offices, public sector units, banking and insurance services, postal operations, coal mining and industrial production were affected.

Jaishankar meets China's Xi Jinping in Beijing, discusses bilateral ties
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the second day of his visit to Beijing. During their meeting, Jaishankar apprised the Chinese premier of of the recent development in the bilateral ties of the two countries. "Called on President Xi Jinping this morning in Beijing along with my fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister @narendramodi. Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers Meeting. This is his first visit to the country in almost six years. Jaishankar meets Chinese foreign minister On Monday, Jaishankar met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and expressed confidence that the India-China ties can develop along a positive trajectory on the foundation of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity. During the talks, Jaishankar said it is essential for both the economies to avoid "restrictive trade measures and roadblocks". He also stressed on the need to address border-related issues, saying that differences should not become disputes and nor should competition become a conflict. "We have made good progress in the past nine months for the normalisation of our bilateral relations. It is a result of the resolution of friction along the border and our ability to maintain peace and tranquility there. This is the fundamental basis for mutual strategic trust and for smooth development of bilateral relations. It is now incumbent on us to address other aspects related to the border, including de-escalation," he said, as quoted by news agency ANI. India and China reached agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in India-China border areas in Depsang and Demchok on October 21, 2024, leading to disengagement from all the friction points of 2020.

Maharashtra to enact anti-conversion law in December, will be stricter than other States: Minister
The Maharashtra government will bring a tough law to prevent religious conversions in the winter session of the legislature and its provisions will be more stringent than similar legislations existing in other States, Minister Pankaj Bhoyar has said. Speaking in the Legislative Council on Monday (July 14, 2025), the Minister of State for Home (Rural) noted Maharashtra will be the 11th Indian State to come up with such a law. "A panel has been formed under the Director General of Police to frame a law (against religious conversions) that will be stricter than the rest of the 10 states. A report (on the issue drafted by DGP) has been submitted and the law will be passed in the coming (winter) session," he told the House. The Winter Session of the State Legislature is usually held in December in Nagpur, the second capital of Maharashtra. Raising the issue of forced conversion in the State, Shiv Sena leader and nominated MLC Manisha Kayande alleged a pregnant woman committed suicide in Sangli district of western Maharashtra as she was under pressure (from in-laws) to change her religion. There was a fight in a Pune-based family over the issue of religious conversion and cross FIRs were filed over the matter, she said. Kayande pointed out that 10 States— Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand— have their own anti-conversion law. The MLC asked whether Maharashtra's Mahayuti government will bring an anti-conversion law like these 10 States, to which the Minister replied in the affirmative. Last week, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule also said a strict law to prevent religious conversions will be enacted in the State. Replying to a debate on the issue in the State Assembly, Mr. Bawankule had said he would speak to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on how to bring an anti-conversion law with stringent provisions.
