Successive govts. failed to protect green cover, says Mallikarjun Kharge
He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the 'Hasiru Patha' and 'Hasiru Hejje-Kalaburagi' programmes under Vanamahotsava-2025 jointly organised by Departments of Forest, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Urban Development and the district administration here on Saturday.
Though the country has lost its 20 lakh hectares of forest cover in the last ten years, the State governments are nonchalant in implementing the laws to protect the forest land, Mr. Kharge alleged.
'Our former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi introduced the Forest Conservation Act 1980, and further the Forest Rights Act was introduced during Man Mohan Singh's tenure, and recently the Modi-led government enacted the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act, 2023, but no States in the country are fully complying with forest related laws. If this situation continues, the environment degradation can indeed worsen air quality and generate more health hazards in the coming days,' Mr. Kharge expressed.
Expressing concern over the increasing deaths due to cardiac arrest, especially among youngsters' the leader said that clean air, water and a healthy environment are crucial for good health.
Currently, India's forest and tree cover is 25.17 % of the country's geographical area, while Karnataka's forest cover is at 21.21 % of its total geographical area. At least 33% of forest cover is necessary to ensure adequate oxygen supply and water availability and to promote environmental health.
Stressing on the need to increase forest cover to combat climate change and global warming, Mr. Kharge suggested the State government develop forests near the backwaters of the reservoirs and dams.
The leader appealed to the public to join their hands with the government in expanding green cover by planting saplings at their homes, schools, and on the borders of agricultural fields. Just planting saplings is not a solution, ensuring survival of the planted trees is equally important, he said.
The State government aims to plant three crore saplings this year, of which even if 2.5 crore of saplings survive, it will be highly beneficial, Mr. Kharge expressed.
Mr. Kharge also distributed saplings to the students on the occasion.
Minister for Forest and Environment Eshwar B. Khandre and Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Priyank Kharge; MP, legislators, senior officials from the Forest Department, RDPR and Urban Development departments were present.

Kishan slams Kharge's remarks, says he spoke like gulli leader
Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy said that he strongly condemns the vulgar, offensive and ill-considered comments made by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge in his address during a meeting on Friday. He said on Saturday, that a national party president has forgotten his status and made such vile comments. The Delhi leader has been reduced to the level of a gully leader. This is another proof of the downfall of the Congress. No one expected that 80-year-old Kharge would descend to this level. Are these comments his own? Or did he read a script given by someone? It should be assumed that he was impatient with the Congress's successive failures, unable to say anything about his leadership, and resorted to antics and lashed out at the BJP. It is ridiculous that Kharge is blaming the Modi government for not capturing PoK. Isn't it Congress's fault that Kashmir, which should have been under Indian control, went to Pakistan? Wasn't the Nehru government's mistake in 1948 the reason for the birth of PoK...? Can you tell me why the Indian army was brought back from PoK that day? Even though the Indian army defeated Pakistan in 1971, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did not capture PoK. Moreover, 90,000 Pakistani soldiers who were taken hostage were released unconditionally. But, the Modi government destroyed the terrorist camps in PoK after the Pahalgam attack. Operation Sindoor, the Balakot air strikes before that, and the surgical strikes. These are all proof of India's growing capability under Modi's rule. Did they ever respond to terrorist attacks during the UPA rule? Is it not true that despite the Mumbai attacks, the attack on Parliament, and many bomb blasts, everything was folded up and kept silent? I ask. Kishan Reddy said the Modi government had given freedom to the Indian Army and given a befitting reply to the terror attacks, 'you and your leaders, Rahul Gandhi, spoke in the Pakistani language. Asking 'Show evidence of surgical strikes and tell us the number of fighter jets shot down in Operation Sindhur.' Kishan Reddy pointed out that Kharge is also misleading the people about the words secular and socialist in the Preamble of the Constitution. In 1975, Congress amended the Constitution through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment by putting opposition leaders in jail. The BJP has never said anything about the words secular and socialist included in the Preamble. 'It is their personal opinion that some RSS leaders are saying that the words socialism and secularism are not part of the basic principles of the Preamble of the Constitution adopted in 1949 and that there is a need for a debate on them.' Attributing this to the BJP is a blatant lie. In the last Lok Sabha elections, Congress launched a terrible propaganda campaign that if BJP won, it would change the constitution and abolish reservations. Now, to cover up its failures and incompetence in Telangana, it is again spreading the same kind of propaganda.

Hasiru Patha launched in Kalaburagi
1 2 Pic: Hasiru Patha launched in Kalaburagi by RS opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge . Forest minister Eshwar Khandre and others were present Kalaburagi: Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, emphasised the importance of developing forest cover in the state and protecting the environment. He was speaking after inaugurating the Vanamahotsava 2025 Hasiru Patha and Kalaburagi Hasiru Hejje programme at the Polytechnic College campus of Hyderabad Karnataka Institute of Education, Kalaburagi on Saturday, where he participated in a ceremonial sapling-watering event. The nation requires more forest coverage. Tree plantation along roads must be accompanied by their protection. As highlighted by Rajya Sabha opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge, public participation alongside govt efforts is crucial. During his ministerial tenure, Kharge observed that despite efforts to expand forest coverage, locals would fell roadside trees for agricultural tools. He clarified that while using fallen or unsuitable trees is acceptable, felling healthy trees poses significant risks. "The country currently maintains 25.1% forest coverage, with the state showing only 21%, falling short of other regions by 11%. To ensure adequate oxygen supply and water availability, forest coverage should reach 33%. Kharge advocated for tree plantation across educational institutions, roadsides, and available lands," Kharge said. "Despite forest development being a key component of the 20-point programme, some have dismissed its importance. Currently, 20 lakh hectares of forest has been lost, including coastal regions. While the periphery shows tree coverage, internal areas reveal cleared land for development, which is concerning. Environmental protection requires collective responsibility and awareness. Modi govt's recent forest conservation amendment act lacks proper implementation. Continued environmental degradation threatens access to clean air, sunlight, and food security," he commented. Kharge recommended utilising river water to develop forests near dam backwaters. He encouraged public participation in expanding forest coverage through home gardening. The state govt's target of planting 3 crore saplings this year could prove highly beneficial even if 2.5 crore plants survive, he added. MP Radhakrishna Doddamani, ministers Eshwar Khandre and Priyank Kharge, MLAs BR Patil, MY Patil, Allamaprabhu Patil, MLC Thippannappa Kamakanuru, Shasheel Namosi, and Jagdev Guttedar were present.
