K.C. Venugopal slams RSS, Union Ministers over call to drop ‘secular' and ‘socialist' from Preamble

All India Congress Committee general secretary K.C. Venugopal, MP, has slammed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Union Ministers for suggesting the removal of the words 'secular' and 'socialist' from the Preamble of the Constitution. Speaking to media persons in Alappuzha on Saturday, Mr. Venugopal said the RSS-BJP agenda to amend the Constitution would not be allowed to succeed. 'There is a conspiracy. After all, the BJP came to power by creating confusion and doubt among the people. Union Ministers have said that secularism and socialism are unnecessary. This amounts to a violation of the Constitution,' he said. The Congress leader said the RSS was evoking memories of the Emergency to push for Constitutional amendments. 'Even the word socialism seems to scare them. The claim that the RSS stands for the Hindu community is false. We will not allow secularism and socialism to be removed. We will resist any such move, including in Parliament,' Mr. Venugopal said. RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale has suggested removing the words 'secular' and 'socialist' from the Preamble. Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Jitendra Singh later threw their weight behind the idea. Earlier, inaugurating the Youth Congress training camp in Alappuzha, he called for strengthening the organisation from the grassroots. 'Good leadership is not enough. The foundation should be strong. We need to strengthen the foundation of the organisation to move forward,' Mr. Venugopal said.

Congress demands urgent evacuation of Indians from Iran

Congress on Tuesday demanded urgent measures from the Indian government to ensure the safe return of Indians from Iran, which is involved in a conflict with Israel. Pawan Khera, chairman of the media and publicity department of the All India Congress Committee, accused the government of not acting with alacrity on the issue of evacuating Indians from the war-torn nation. "We have been raising this issue for the past three days. Many of our students from Kashmir are there. We have been asking the government to wake up and realise that issuing advisories is not enough,' Khera told IANS. 'The government must make arrangements for the safe return of Indians from there,' he said. Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Tuesday that amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, Indian students in Tehran have been relocated from the city, and some Indian nationals have been assisted in leaving the country through the border with Armenia. As the Israel-Iran conflict entered its fifth day, the hostilities between the two nations continued to escalate. Several missiles from Iran were fired at Israel, triggering air raid sirens in Haifa and dozens of other cities across northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights, confirmed the Israeli military. "Indian students in Tehran have been moved out of the city for reasons of safety, through arrangements made by the Embassy. Other residents who are self-sufficient in terms of transport have also been advised to move out of the city in view of the developing situation," the MEA said. "Separately, some Indians have been facilitated to leave Iran through the border with Armenia," it added. The Ministry also said that the Indian Embassy is continuously in touch with the community to provide all feasible assistance. It stated that further advisory will be issued for the security of Indian nationals. Earlier in the day, India urged its nationals in Iran and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) to evacuate Tehran and shift to a safer location following escalating tensions in the region.

Panchayat Polls: UP Congress pushes ground-level mobilisation

The Uttar Pradesh Congress on Sunday directed its district-level leaders to intensify preparations for the upcoming panchayat elections, describing them as a true test of the party's grassroots strength. 'All district-level leaders will play a crucial role in panchayat elections, which are a true test of the party's strength at the grassroots,' Avinash Pande, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and UP in-charge, said, during a review meeting held in Lucknow. The review, which focused on the Braj region, was attended by UP Congress chief Ajay Rai, Congress legislature party leader Aradhna Mishra, and several other senior leaders. Districts under the scanner included Mathura, Agra, Firozabad, Etah, Mainpuri, Kasganj, Aligarh, Hathras, Badaun, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, and Farrukhabad. 'All coordinators should spend maximum time in their respective areas as this is significant for building a strong organisational structure in the party,' Ajay Rai said. State Congress leaders also approved several district-level committees during the review. However, in many districts, committee proposals lacked representation from all communities. District and city presidents have been instructed to rework these lists to include women, Dalits, backwards classes, and minorities. Referring to party leader Rahul Gandhi's vision, Pande said, 'The organisational structure should reflect the principles of social justice. Every section of society must get a place in the party hierarchy.' The review of the Braj region comes after the West Zone review began on June 14. During these evaluations, the party identified shortcomings in the representation of diverse communities within the proposed district committees.

Siddaramaiah will be replaced by Shivakumar or Kharge by Nov. or Dec., says Vishwanath

MLC A.H. Vishwanath said there will be a change of guard in the State in November or December, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will be replaced by either Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar or All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge. Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Mr. Vishwanath said Mr. Siddaramaiah was on his way out, and there was no doubt about it. He responded to the statements of Mysuru district in-charge Minister H.C. Mahadevappa who stated that not only was the CM chair stable or safe but so was the person sitting on it. The State government's decision to conduct a fresh caste census came under criticism, and Mr. Vishwanath said that over ₹180 crore had been spent on the Kantharaj and Jaiprakash Hegde report but to no avail. He questioned the government's claim that the new survey would be completed in three months, and said that teachers were not free and hence it could not be conducted. The backward class communities feel cheated, he added. Mr. Vishwanath accused Mr. Siddaramaiah of making scapegoats of others for his follies and cited the recent stampede in Bengaluru. Though many senior officials advised against the IPL victory parade, the Chief Minister ignored their advice and went ahead with the event, said Mr. Vishwanath. The MLC questioned the need for Mr. Siddaramaiah to have so many 'advisors', and said the State exchequer was being squandered. There were no norms for the guarantee schemes, and they were being implemented without any yardstick, he said. More than ₹90,000 crore had been spent but there was nothing to show by way of development in the State, he added.
