German regional train derails, killing at least three people
Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, 158 kilometres west of Munich, remains under investigation. Photos from the scene showed parts of the train on its side as rescuers climbed atop the carriages.
It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. Roughly 100 people were onboard the train when at least two carriages derailed in a forested area around 6:10 pm.
Storms passed through the area before the crash, and investigators were seeking to determine if the rain was a factor.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in a post on social platform X that he mourned the victims and gave his condolences to their families.
Deutsche Bahn, Germany's main national railway operator, said in a statement that it was cooperating with investigators. The company also offered its condolences.

A young boy who suffered two broken hips in a hit-and-run crash while riding an e-scooter has said: "I thought I was going to die." Bradley Hooper, 11, was riding his cousin's e-scooter when he was hit by a black Vauxhall coming from Sullivan Road into Montague Avenue, Sholing. His mum Hollie Hooper, 30, was told by a witness he went "down like a ragdoll' in the incident on Wednesday just after 7.20pm. Speaking while still in hospital, Bradley said the people in the car 'drove off and left me'. He said: 'I thought I was going to die and thought: 'I love my family, and my mum is my angel'. 'I have scary dreams of them coming to get me and running me over again." Bradley added: 'Thank you to everyone who cares for me and loves me.' Devastated mum-of-four Hollie said Bradley is waiting to see if he needs surgery. She said he is worried about returning home to Sholing in case the drive comes back. 'I rushed there as soon as I could when they told me and the police were on the scene straight away', she said. 'The driver nearly killed Bradley and I am disgusted and mortified.' Hampshire Constabulary confirmed an investigation into the incident is underway. A spokesperson said: 'We were called at 7.21pm on July 30 with reports of a car colliding with a pedestrian on Montague Avenue. 'The pedestrian, an 11-year-old boy, sustained fractures to his hips. 'The car involved did not remain at the scene. 'Enquiries remain ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to report this directly to police on 101, quoting 44250342256. 26 dogs removed from Chicago Lawn home amid animal cruelty investigation
More than two dozen dogs were removed from a home on Friday in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, after police responded to a report of animal cruelty. Police said officers were called to a home in the 3300 block of West 65th Place around 4:30 p.m. for a report of animal cruelty, and found multiple dogs in the back yard and garage. At least one of the dogs was injured. Chicago Animal Care and Control officials confirmed 26 dogs were removed from a home. Officials said the situation would place an additional strain on the city's animal shelter, which is already near capacity. In July, the city's animal shelter took in an average of more than 50 cats and dogs per day. "While animals involved in this case will not be immediately available, we have hundreds of other pets currently waiting for loving homes. Adoption fees are waived for the entire month of August, and we encourage the public to visit the shelter. For those unable to adopt, fostering is also a vital way to help, and we work with multiple rescue partners who offer foster programs," a Chicago Animal Care and Control spokesperson said. "We appreciate the public's continued support and compassion for the animals in our care." Area 1 detectives were conducting an investigation into the animal cruelty allegations.
