Green energy corporation to lease barren land for solar projects in Tamil Nadu
A senior TNGECL official told TNIE, 'We plan to take land under the Centre's Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme. For the planned solar panel capacity of 420 MW, we will need around 1,300 acres of land.' In the first phase, the corporation had already installed solar plants with a capacity of 3 MW in Ranipet and Vellore districts.
'We are waiting for approval from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission to go ahead with another 11 MW. Once the lands are identified and approvals are received, tenders will be floated to select project developers,' the official said. Another official explained that these kinds of solar plants should ideally be located within a five-kilometre radius of power substations operated by Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited to avoid high cost of transmission power lines.
The official further said that the discom will sign a 25-year agreement with the developers to purchase power.

The Union government has floated its largest ever tender to deploy 10,900 AC and non-AC buses under the Prime Minister e-drive scheme, in a big push towards the electrification of public bus fleets in five Indian cities, including the national capital. The tender is floated at a time when Indian cities are struggling with a low number of public buses leading to overcrowding and private vehicle usage. A recent report by consultancy firm Kearney found that there are an average of 0.26 buses per 1,000 residents in the top four megacities compared to the threshold of 0.6. The buses will be of 9m and 12m length with yearly assured service of 64,800km and 72,000km, respectively, for 12 years, according to the tender document. The tendering process is being conducted by the Union ministry of power, new and renewable energy-owned Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL) under a Gross Cost Contract model, as was done for the PM-eBus Sewa scheme meant for smaller cities without formal public transport. The expression of interest from state government authorities for the scheme was sought from November 2024. According to the policy document, an assessment matrix has been developed to evaluate the performance of states in promoting EV charging infrastructure development. This matrix includes parameters across three main categories: existing EV policies, EV penetration, and enablers for deploying EV charging stations. The scheme operated by the Union ministry of heavy industries was approved by the Cabinet in September 2024 for procuring 14,028 e-buses along with 2.479 million e-2-wheelers, and 316,000 e-3-wheelers. The drive towards electrification in the automotive sector is in line with India's net-zero target by 2070. The PM e-drive scheme was preceded by the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME) scheme.

Door delivery of rations to aged, disabled begins in TN
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Department on Wednesday commenced the pilot project for home-delivery of essential commodities —rice, sugar, wheat, palmolein oil, and toor dal — under the Public Distribution System (PDS) for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PwDs) in Chennai and nine other districts. A minimum of 10 fair price shops across two taluks in each district have been selected for the pilot study of this initiative. Apart from Chennai, the other nine districts included in the first phase of the project are Tirunelveli, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Ranipet, Erode, Dharmapuri, Nagapattinam, the Nilgiris, and Cuddalore. On June 17, TNIE was the first to report on the government's decision to roll out the project across the state. According to official sources from the cooperation and food department, the door-to-door delivery project aims to cover cardholding families where the members are either below 18 years of age or 70 years and above. Cardholding families where all the members fall in the disabled category will also be covered under the scheme, sources said. As part of the initiative, 10 ration shops in the southern zone of Chennai have been selected to serve around 650 ration cardholders. PDS home-delivery initiative to benefit 15L ration cardholders The selected areas are Velachery, Saidapet, Jaffarkhanpet, Nesapakkam, and surrounding regions. The commodities under the pilot drive will be delivered before July 5. The initiative, expected to be formally launched by Chief Minister M K Stalin in a week or two, will benefit 15 lakh of the total 2.21 crore ration cardholders across all 38 districts in the state.

93K farmers benefit from solar pumps for irrigation purposes
Lucknow: More than 93,062 farmers benefited from the distribution of solar pumps for irrigation purposes, significantly reducing their cultivation expenses, govt said on Wednesday. This is part of the Solar Irrigation Pump Distribution Scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM). Under this scheme, farmers are eligible to receive up to 60% subsidy. Selection of farmers for the scheme is based on a token system and follows a 'first come, first served' model. At the time of application, farmers are required to deposit Rs 5,000 online as token money. For a 2 HP solar pump, the applicant must have a functional borewell of 4 inches; for 3 HP and 5 HP pumps, a 6-inch borewell; and for 7.5 and 10 HP pumps, an 8-inch borewell with an adequate water level is mandatory. Agriculture minister Surya Pratap Shahi said farmers seeking to reduce input costs and promote water conservation can apply under the PM-KUSUM scheme. "The scheme not only helps in increasing farmers' income but also reduces dependence on diesel for irrigation. It ensures access to free or low-cost electricity for irrigation and contributes to environmental conservation by cutting down the use of diesel pumps. Additionally, it supports efforts to address the challenges of climate change," the spokesperson said.
