Wexford secondary school get green light to build new astro pitch
On Friday, March 28, school principal, John Michael Porter applied for planning permission with Wexford County Council. The application, that includes a 50 m by 60 m astroturf surface, surrounded fencing and four flood lights, was approved by the Planning Department on Friday, May 16, subject to conditions.
One of the conditions under which the project was given the green light was that the 'proposed lighting design should avoid light spill onto public roads and neighbouring properties".
In the interests of residential amenity and proper planning and sustainable development the council stated that 'the lighting scheme shall be installed so as to minimise any significant impact on the surrounding residential amenity and to prevent glare or dazzle on the public road or on adjoining properties, and energy efficient luminaire selection shall be used for the development'.
School principal, John Michael Porter, explained how the development plan involves using funds granted from the Sports Capital Programme and will be supplemented by fundraising to improve the playing facilities in the school.
'The new facility will support the school's promotion of sporting opportunities for girls and will be used for PE classes and for team training. With our strong commitment to our local community it is also envisioned that local community groups will have the opportunity to hire the facility for evening and weekend sporting activities,' said Mr Porter.
The facility will also be available to the students of the neighbouring primary schools, Bunscoil Rís and Catherine McAuley.
The school is promoting a Pitch Development Draw as part of its fundraising campaign with the 1st prize of BYD Dolphin Car, or €30,000, and four additional prizes of €1,000. Tickets, costing €25, may be purchased online through iDonate or physical tickets may be purchased from the school, Lulu's Boutique in South Street or from school students.
'All support for the draw will be greatly appreciated,' concluded Mr Porter.

Indeed with the local authority having failed spectacularly to provide a modular performance space in Crescent Quay in the interim, the arts community remains up in arms about Wexford's lack of an affordable mid-sized venue to host productions. However, on Friday, Wexford County Council officials circulated correspondence to local officials seeking to provide somewhat of a boost to the arts community. The local authority now intends to provide a rehearsal space in what is left of the old parish hall building, with a planning application due for submission later this month or in early August. "Work is under way whereby the Arts Department plans to submit a funding application to support the development of a space on the ground floor of the building for dance/circus rehearsal space and workshops,' the email stated. 'The maximum grant available is €150,000 with Wexford County Council to provide supporting funds of 40% of the grant amount. 'This development arises following the collaborative work between Wexford Borough and the Arts Office, together with the technical design input of Special Projects which will see an application submitted in July/August 2025. 'The Arts Officer has consulted with the sector to guide the development of the strongest possible funding application. This represents the first phase of positive developments of this vacant building.'

LEONA MAGUIRE and Jennifer Kupcho are tied for second after the first round of the LPGA Dow Championship pairs event in Midland, Michigan on Thursday. The Cavan native and her American teammate finished with an opening round 67, leaving the duo three under par. Public consultation opens on new Drumconrath recreational development in Meath
The project, titled the Drumconrath Recreational Space and Enterprise Building, is designed to revitalise the underutilised site by delivering a mix of community-focused recreational facilities and local enterprise opportunities. The proposed development includes extensive site preparation, drainage improvements, and landscaping to transform the area into a vibrant and accessible public space. Recreational amenities will feature a 3x3 half basketball court, two outdoor table tennis courts, children's chute slides, and outdoor fitness equipment. The design also includes a network of granite-paved plaza areas, resin-bound gravel paths, local stone seating walls, timber-top benches, grass meadows, and newly planted trees. A key element of the project is the conservation and adaptive reuse of Drumconrath House, a protected structure located on the site. The building is set to be converted from a private dwelling into a community café on the ground floor, with the upper level redesigned to host business rooms that will support local economic activity. In addition to the new facilities, the proposal includes significant road safety improvements. These involve traffic calming measures such as speed bumps, upgraded junctions, and the installation of new roadside kerbing to ensure better safety and access for both pedestrians and vehicles. An Appropriate Assessment Screening has been carried out under the EU Habitats Directive, with Meath County Council concluding that the development poses no significant environmental impact. As such, a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is not required. Plans for the development are available for public consultation until July 9, 2025 at Meath County Council's Planning Department in Navan and at the Municipal District Office in Kells. Meanwhile submissions or observations regarding the project must be received by Wednesday, July 23, 2025 via the online portal or in writing to the council.
