Newcastle MOBO Awards: History of black music photo display at Discovery Museum
She added the creative community had changed through history and "no longer are we drawn to other places to be able to programme some of the best and most diverse talent".The display features international artists such as Chaka Khan, Public Enemy and Goldie, alongside contemporary Newcastle artists Kema Kay and Kay Greyson, at venues including Jumpin' Hot Club, Hoochie Coochie, World Headquarters and at festivals Boss Sounds and Evolution.
Keith Merrin, director of North East Museums, which manages Discovery Museum, said: "We welcome people from all over the UK and further afield so for our visitors to be able to see this as soon as they walk in the museum is wonderful."The montage of photographs will be projected on the wall above the iconic Turbinia ship - the first object people see when entering the museum.The display closes on 23 February.As part of the MOBO Fringe Festival, workshops have also been held in schools about rap music and song writing.Young people have also been learning God Gave Me Feet for Dancing by Ezra Collective - a previous MOBO winner - as part of the production of a video to be shown during the ceremony.Newcastle Youth Choir Project will join ensembles Jambone, Quay Voices and Step Up Singing on the concourse at the Glasshouse on Sunday for a showcase of music by black artists.The MOBO Awards are being held at Newcastle's Utilita Arena with acts including Krept & Konan, Bashy, Spice and Nova Twins confirmed to perform.

The 36-year-old star suffered the gruesome injury during her Triple Threat match with Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky at WrestleMania 41 in April 2025, and has been out of action ever since. Bianca, who appears in Netflix's new docu-series WWE Unreal, returned to the ring as a special guest referee for Naomi and Jade Cargill's match at Evolution a couple of weeks ago, but she exclusively showed Metro the extent of the the issue. 'Right now the finger, it's fully healed, but the problem is that it won't bend from the knuckle to the tip,' she said, before demonstrating on camera. 'Trying to get in the ring to wrestle like this, it's just sticking out there. So right now, we're working on that aspect. So it's been a lot more complicated than I thought. The EST of WWE confirmed while the break is 'fully healed', now she's focused on 'getting the mobility back and getting it into a safe place'. 'I'm in rehab and therapy nonstop, so we're working on it,' she smiled. The pain and struggles that come with being a WWE superstar will be on full display in Unreal on Netflix, as the series gives viewers an unprecedented peek behind the curtain. In that same spirit, Bianca opened up on how Rhea – who also features heavily in the series recounting her own injury setbacks – helped her finish the WrestleMania match. 'I felt it immediately, but I thought I had broke all my fingers, and it took Rhea to really snap me out of that moment,' she said. 'I was just rolling around in pain. And she's like, 'Ay! Ay!' And I'm like, 'Oh, sorry, we have to finish this match!' ' At one point in the documentary, Bianca – who is famous for handmaking every single one of her wrestling outfits – accidentally stabs herself with a needle as she finishes her Elimination Chamber gear at the last second. 'I'm always poking myself with needles, and I'm anxious. It's just crazy chaos backstage, and it's amazing to see all that,' she said. 'And then when we go out there, nobody even knows the chaos that was happening.' It's these kinds of struggles that Bianca hopes WWE Unreal can shine a light on. Asked which preconceptions she hopes the series can get rid of, she said: 'The general idea of wrestling just being fake. Is it scripted? Yes, it is. But there's so much realness that goes into it. 'It's a lot of hard work. It's an engine. From the production and creative, trying to write storylines, and then injuries happen, and us having to pivot, and go with the flow.' That's proven true for Bianca as she recovers from her injury. Despite the lingering issues, she recently returned as the special guest referee for the No Holds Barred match between Jade and Naomi. 'I get more nervous refereeing than actually having a match. I've gained so much respect for the referees,' she admitted, having also refereed a match between Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky earlier this year. 'You can completely mess up the match just being the referee,' she explained, and in WWE Unreal it's explained how the referee is essentially the bridge between the wrestlers in the ring, and the producers backstage. 'You're such an integral part of the matches. People, a lot of times, don't realise that,' Bianca pointed out, while recalling an awkward moment the first time she put on the stripes live on Monday Night Raw. 'The battery pack kept falling out,' she laughed. 'At the same time as you're trying to ref and you're trying to count and you're trying to make sure that you're in the right spot, you also have people in your ear talking to you from backstage.' These kinds of secrets being spilled are well known by diehard fans, but even they have never seen the realities of wrestling laid out like they are in WWE Unreal. Bianca is no stranger to reality TV, but she admitted there was a certain level of nerves going into pulling back the curtain so far. 'You're not really your Bianca Belair character. You're frustrated, you're anxious, you're nervous,' she said. 'It was really nerve wracking sometimes to pull that curtain back and have that camera in our face in that type of way.' However, she hopes the end results will be a 'newfound respect' for wrestling – and specifically the women involved. Host of NRL stars mourn the 'King of Island Reggae' who is credited for unifying the Pacific
A number of NRL stars have paid tribute to esteemed singer George Veikoso, who has died at his home in Suva, Fiji. Veikoso, 55, is widely known as the 'King of Island Reggae', with his musical influence and stirring voice resulting in global admiration. The likes of Spencer Leniu, Jamayne Isaako, Kodi Nikorima, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Viliame Kikau all posted separate Instagram stories once Veikoso's death was confirmed. Bulldogs second-rower Kikau labelled the performer the 'greatest of all time', which was echoed by Leniu, who is a Samoan international. Former NRL star Eloni Vunakece recalled once crossing paths with Veikoso in his native Fiji, and said the memorable experience will always be etched in his mind. 'They say you should never meet your heroes. But if you were lucky enough to meet George, you felt the love that emanates through his music [and] in one of his big warm hugs,' he said. Veikoso's death was announced by the Polynesian News Network, who said in a statement: 'He was a movement, a voice for the people, a light in the dark. His music wasn't just something we listened to.' Numerous fans took to social media to pay tribute to Veikoso, who was affectionately known as 'Fiji.' 'Man this one is tough. RIP George 'Fiji' Veikoso. Thank you for blessing the world with your voice and your music. One of the most talented Polynesian artists to ever do it. Your sound, your soul, your legacy will live on,' one posted. Another added: 'George 'Fiji' Veikoso has passed on. A true son of Fiji. Your melodies will always remain a timeless echo of your passion, your talent and the beauty you shared with the world. You will never be forgotten.' A third posted: 'Wow so young, thoughts and prayers to his family. 'Rest in peace to the king of Polynesian music.' Born in 1970, Veikoso grew up singing in church and moved to Hawaii in 1987. He released his first album, Evolution, in 1994 while his second, Born & Raised, topped the charts in 1996. The musician co-wrote the theme tune for Baywatch Hawaii - which starred Jason Mamoa - and was filmed between 1999 and 2001. In 2021, Veikoso received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the Polynesian reggae stream Veikoso also tried his hand at acting, appearing in the 2002 surfer film Blue Crush alongside Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez. Health issues affected Veikoso's life in recent years, and at times he performed from a wheelchair. Ozzy Osbourne tributes as Rod Stewart and Elton John remember Black Sabbath frontman

Music legend Elton John described Ozzy Osbourne as a "dear friend" tonight - as the showbiz world came to terms with the frontman's shock death. Black Sabbath singer Ozzy, who suffered from Parkinson's disease, died just weeks after a phenomenal farewell gig at his beloved Villa Park in Birmingham. And Sir Rod Stewart also took to social media while defiantly accepting his own journey towards the exit door, saying he and Ozzy will be reunited for a gig in the sky. Singer-songwriter Sir Elton, 78, posted on Instagram: "So sad to hear the news of Ozzy Osbourne passing away. He was a dear friend and a huge trailblazer who secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods - a true legend. "He was also one of the funniest people I've ever met. I will miss him dearly. To Sharon and the family, I send my condolences and love. Elton xx." Crooner Sir Rod, 80, who recently performed at Glastonbury, also posted on Instagram. He said: "Bye, bye Ozzy. Sleep well, my friend. I'll see you up there - later rather than sooner." Former boxing world champion Frank Bruno MBE wrote: "RIP Ozzy Osbourne. We met several times years ago. He called me "Big man" when he asked me if I liked Rock music. "I said "Soul & Reggae was my thing". He said "Give me a day big man and you will love Rock music". Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore Tweeted a picture of fans at Villa Park with an Ozzy display saying 'Up the Villa'. The post read: "Rest in peace, Ozzy." Welsh YouTube prankster Ben Phillips said on Facebook: "It is heartbreaking to hear that the great Ozzy Osbourne has passed away at 76 years of age." The social media star, who has more than 4.5million subscribers on the video platform, added: "Farewell Ozzy Osbourne: The Prince of Darkness Has Left Us – The End of an Era in Rock Music." And Lisa Lange, Senior Vice President of animal charity PETA, said tonight: " Ozzy Osbourne was a legend and a provocateur, but PETA will remember the 'Prince of Darkness' most fondly for the gentle side he showed to animals. "Most recently cats, by using his fame to decry painful, crippling declawing mutilations. Ozzy may have been the singer, but his wife, Sharon, and his daughter, Kelly, were of one voice when it meant protecting animals. "Ozzy will be missed by animal advocates the world over." Ozzy famously bit the head off a live bat on stage during a gig - while performing at Des Moines, Iowa, in 1982 - believing it to be rubber after it had been thrown on stage. Real name John Michael Osbourne, Ozzy released 22 studio albums between 1970 and 2022 - nine with Black Sabbath, and 13 solo albums, with the last in 2022.
