Resolve Hinjewadi IT Park woes by July 25 or face stir: MP Supriya Sule warns Maharashtra govt

Time of India05-07-2025
PUNE: MP
Supriya Sule
on Friday warned that if the mounting civic and infrastructure issues in the Hinjewadi IT Park area are not resolved by July 25, she will launch an agitation on July 26. Following a ground survey of the area, Sule reiterated her long-standing demand for a dedicated authority to address the region's complex governance challenges.
In a strongly worded letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sule called for the creation of a Special City Development Authority or an Industrial Township Authority with autonomous powers for the Hinjawadi-Maan-Marunji cluster and nearby villages including Jambhe, Gahunje, Nande, Lavale, Pirangut, and Bhukum. "There must be integrated planning, funding and service delivery. Right now, the governance is fragmented," she told TOI.
The Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, which houses over 300 IT companies and employs more than 3 lakh professionals, contributes significantly to Maharashtra's economy. According to the 2024 STPI report, the Pune region accounts for a majority of the Rs 1.05 lakh crore annual software exports. Yet, Sule noted, the area continues to suffer from poor civic amenities, traffic congestion, unauthorized construction, and frequent waterlogging.

'There has been rampant construction over natural drainage channels in multiple locations. This has worsened flooding issues,' she said, adding that Metro debris, uncleaned drains, and incomplete roads have compounded the crisis.
During her Friday visit, Sule said she had repeatedly sought time from the CM and demanded a comprehensive meeting with all stakeholders. 'When he takes the meeting, it must be a jumbo meeting with all stakeholders, not just a formality,' she said.
She also called for the removal of Metro construction debris, immediate cleaning of all drains, and completion of roads within a year—commitments that, she said, were made to her by officials. A review meeting with the Industries Minister is scheduled for July 8, she added.
Sule said she would now visit the area twice a month to monitor the situation. Responding to local demands to merge the area with Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), she said, 'We are open to any solution—whether PCMC or a new authority—as long as the issues are addressed.'she said
The demands include: a moratorium on new building permissions until basic infrastructure is ensured, Fast-tracked civic upgrades in roads, water, waste management, policing, and transport, a single-window governance system to reduce administrative delays and involvement of citizens and industry bodies in local planning and execution.

National Overseas Scholarship Funds Frozen, Selected Candidates Have Offers From Global Varsities, Can't Go

Nagpur: Many bright students, including 29 girls from underprivileged communities — scheduled castes, denotified tribes, landless labourers and minorities — could lose their opportunity to study in premier foreign universities with the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment failing to issue award letters to majority selected candidates under the govt's prestigious National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) scheme for 2025–26. The ministry has cited insufficient funds. Though 106 students were officially selected after a rigorous process in the first round, only 40 received provisional award letters. The others — many of whom hold offers from top global universities — are left in the lurch. These 106 students, including 29 girls hail from Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. They gained admissions to master's and PhD programmes in universities in Singapore, Australia, USA, and the UK. The scholarship is granted for only QS-ranked institutions like Johns Hopkins, University of Cambridge, University of Leeds, University of Sydney, National University of Singapore. In its July 1 notification, the Union ministry stated that 440 online applications were received while publishing the list of selected candidates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Uber luxury living at Hyderabad's billionaire junction Sumadhura Group Learn More Undo "Of these, provisional award letters will be issued to candidates from Serial Number 1-40. Provisional award letters to the remaining candidates (41-106) may be issued in due course, subject to availability of funds." However, the notification goes on to state the "candidature of selected candidates is provisional, subject to being found eligible and availability of funds during the 2025-26 fiscal. " Yogesh Taneja, undersecretary in the ministry, told TOI that the five-year budget allocated for NOS was exhausted in the last three years. "We require additional funds, and this will be arranged soon," he said. Taneja mentioned that total allocation of funds for each student varies, as per university's fee, course duration, and country's living expenses. The govt incurs expenses anywhere from Rs40 lakh to Rs 2.5 crore. To a query on why all 106 were not given provisional letters if funds were being arranged and a rider 'subject to availability of funds' put for even selected candidates, Taneja didn't respond. Rajiv Khobragade, president, The Platform for Justice & Human Rights, said, "This is the first time the central govt is short of funds for NOS. Generally, we have to pursue state govts to get scholarship funds released," he said. Though the scheme was allocated ₹130 crore this year — its highest ever — bureaucratic delays, pending clearances, and possible fund diversions have halted implementation, he said. Khobragade, who raised the issue with Union minister Ramdas Athawale, said, "Funds meant for marginalised communities are quietly diverted to other purposes such as tourism or schemes with far less impact, compared to education. How will this country develop if we continue to shift educational funds elsewhere?" In its letter, The Platform has put forward a five-point proposal. It said all selected candidates must be issued award letters even if fund release happens in phases. Formal confirmation will allow students to proceed with visa and admission processes. Temporarily reallocate unused welfare funds to support NOS scholars. Facilitate public sector bank loans with govt undertaking. Place a supplementary demand in the monsoon session of parliament to approve additional education-specific funds. Engage CSR support from PSUs and corporates.

Opening defence sector to desi pvt players robust decision making: Guv

1 2 Nagpur: Governor C P Radhakrishnan on Saturday backed the opening up of India's defence sector to indigenous private players as robust decision-making and termed its criticism regressive. "Bofors guns were imported, and now Rafales were bought. Does it not allow the rest of the world to know about India's defence secrets when weapons are imported," asked Radhakrishnan. He was addressing the first batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Management holders (PGDM) passing out of National Academy of Defence Production (NADP) here. The governor expressed hope that in the changing scenario where the private sector was getting a push, Maharashtra would have defence corridors in line with those in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. One day, Tejas will rule the skies, he said about the light combat aircraft being developed indigenously. "Why should certain political parties oppose privatisation, citing the possibility of military secrets getting leaked? Weapons are made by our own people in our own country. The country should depend on its people rather than on foreigners," he said. India was once importing defence items, now it has become an exporter, he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ada jeragat, terus nampak tua! Those passing out of NADP should take up jobs in companies and eventually become entrepreneurs too," said the governor. Radhakrishnan said as Jharkhand governor, he had planned to set up a Sainik University and it would have been in line with Sainik Schools, where the spirit of nationalism and serving the armed forces is instilled. "But my dream remained unfulfilled as I was soon appointed governor of Maharashtra," said Radhakrishnan, hoping that one day the idea would materialise. He also praised NADP's infrastructure.

Calling students the future of the nation, the CM emphasised the importance of holistic education — one that includes values, life skills, and moral guidance. "Bookish knowledge alone is not enough. Students need spiritual and moral grounding to succeed in life," he said. Highlighting the state's educational reforms, the CM mentioned that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Haryana is making rapid strides in both school and higher education. He said medical colleges are being established in every district, and efforts are underway to ensure degree colleges for girls within a 20-km radius. The CM also spoke about the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP), targeting full rollout in Haryana by 2025.
