Los Angeles Angels select Clemson pitcher in 2025 MLB draft
Left-hander Lucas Mahlstedt was selected by the Angels in the seventh round of the draft Monday with the 199th overall pick. The Tigers' closer for 2025 is the second Clemson player to be selected in the draft after the Miami Marlins drafted outfielder Cam Cannarella with the No. 43 overall pick Sunday.
Mahlstedt is also the second Clemson pitcher taken by the Angels organization in as many seasons. Last year, the club drafted another Tigers closer in right-hander Austin Gordon.
Mahlstedt, who features a sidearm delivery, made the most appearances of any Clemson pitcher in 2025. He appeared in 27 games across 48 innings and was 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA. Mahlstedt's 15 saves were third in the NCAA behind Alabama Crimson Tide right-hander Carson Ozmer and Oklahoma Sooners right-hander Dylan Crooks.
A native of Ormond Beach, Florida, Mahlstedt was named a finalist for the 2025 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, presented annually to the nation's top relief pitcher.
Mahlstedt transferred to Clemson from Wofford following the 2023 season and appeared in 55 games for the Tigers over two seasons. He was a combined 8-2 with a 3.92 ERA in that span, striking out 100 batters and walking 23.

Key LSU baseball pitcher goes undrafted, likely to return to LSU
The 2025 MLB Draft wrapped up on Monday and LSU pitcher Zac Cowan didn't hear his name called. The news points to a return to Baton Rouge for the right-hander, who completed his first year with the Tigers in 2025. Getting Cowan back for another year is big for the Tigers as they rebuild their pitching staff. He'll certainly contend for a starting spot after a phenomenal regular season, which led Johnson to calling him "the best reliever in college baseball." If Cowan's CWS outing vs. Arkansas was a sign of things to come, the Tigers should feel good about Cowan's 2026.

Angels' massive fireworks blunder leaves fans fuming
The Angels celebrated for the wrong team. On Saturday night, Eugenio Suarez swatted his second solo home run of the night in the fourth inning for a 2-1 lead in Anaheim. While the dinger was nothing out of the ordinary for the slugger, what happened immediately after sure was. The pyrotechnics crew at Angel Stadium set off fireworks for the hard-hitting Diamondbacks third baseman, a show normally reserved for only the home team. Angels fans were understandably livid, showering the stadium with boos as Suarez trotted around the bases. Fans immediately began to clown the Angels organization for the dazzling blunder. 'Someone's getting fired over that,' one fan wrote on X, while another questioned if Angel Stadium had seen such a blunder before — which it has. AP Almost a year to the day prior, fireworks went off in the bottom of the ninth with the home team in the process losing 11-0 to the Mariners. In August 2022, the team's minor league affiliate had its fireworks show go horribly awry when the combustibles fired into the stands, sending fans running. The errors have likely not helped foster good feelings around a franchise that has not made a postseason appearance since 2014 and is without a playoff series win since 2009 despite having the likes of Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani and Albert Pujols on their roster at points during the drought. Entering the 2025 All-Star break, the Angels sit at 47-49, second-to-last in the American League West with a seven-game cushion ahead of the Athletics and almost assuredly set to stretch their postseason-less streak to another year. There is some hope for the future — 23-year-old first baseman Nolan Schanuel has a .764 OPS with a 1.4 WAR while 26-year-old pitcher Jose Soriano is also having a solid season with a 1.8 WAR — but seemingly plenty of time to get the fireworks situation sorted out in the meantime.

Brian Kelly says LSU 'still think we are THE Death Valley' over Clemson
SEC Media Days kicked off Monday, giving LSU head coach Brian Kelly the perfect stage to talk up the Tigers' massive season opener against Clemson. Kelly didn't hold back when describing what's on the line, calling it a huge test right out of the gate. 'It's also a program that is considered a premier program,' Kelly said of Clemson. 'We got an incredible challenge that we are excited about and one that we are looking forward to.' Kelly explained how he's kept his team focused all offseason, turning the matchup into a clear, daily reminder. 'Goal-setting is something we are all very familiar with in college football. Everybody talks about goals,' Kelly said. 'We have made this a specific goal, meaning it is tangible for our guys. You go through our weight room, and we have a Clemson paw print on the bags that we hit every day. It is on every monitor in the building to go 1-0.' While the early-season clash is enough motivation, Kelly couldn't resist poking a little fun at Clemson over the long-running 'Death Valley' debate. Both stadiums carry the famous nickname — but Kelly made his side's stance clear. 'We still think we are THE DEATH VALLEY. They can use the name, too. We are letting them borrow it. But at the end of the day, it is about the respect I have for him (Dabo Swinney) and the development of his program and then maintaining that consistently year in and year out.' LSU leads the all-time series 3-1, with the two programs splitting their last two meetings under Swinney — including LSU's 42-25 win for the 2019 national title. They'll settle it again August 30 at 7:30 PM on ABC, with early playoff buzz and plenty of bragging rights on the line.
