'Time For God To...': What Comedian Kumari Muthu's Children Wrote On His Grave

It is customary for a gravestone to bear the date of birth and death of the deceased, often accompanied by a heartfelt message. The gravestone of actor Kumari Muthu is no exception, and the inscription on it has touched many hearts.
Among the many comedians who lit up Tamil cinema in the 1990s, only a select few left a lasting impression. Kumari Muthu was one such figure, whose signature humour and unforgettable smile earned him a special place in the hearts of audiences.
Born in Kanyakumari, Kumari Muthu moved to Chennai at the age of 14, where he began his career in theatre before venturing into films.
Despite having an unassuming appearance and a noticeable squint, he overcame significant challenges and carved out a successful career in cinema.
Kumari Muthu was also known for his fearless stance; he was the first to publicly criticise the leadership of the Actors' Association, a move that led to his expulsion.
Undeterred, he took legal action, won the case, and was reinstated. A devoted admirer of Karunanidhi, he went on to serve as the party's star spokesperson.
He was known not only for his comic timing and natural acting but also for his eloquence and social work as a Christian activist.
Following his death in February 2016, his epitaph became a topic of public interest. At the funeral of director Mahendran, news of Kumari Muthu's gravestone at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Mandaveli went viral. The inscription reads: 'It is the time for the God... to enjoy his laughter'.
This touching message, chosen by his children, reflects the deep love and affection they held for him and has since resonated with fans across the internet.

Tamil Cinema Loses Visionary: Velu Prabhakaran Dies At 68

Tamil cinema mourns the loss of filmmaker, cinematographer, and actor Velu Prabhakaran, who passed away at 68 in a Chennai private hospital on Friday following a long illness. On Thursday, his team announced on X that he was in critical condition, receiving intensive care and constant medical supervision. Known for his fearless approach, Velu Prabhakaran directed films that challenged societal norms, tackling themes like atheism, caste, and sexuality. His notable works include Nalaya Manithan (1989), its sequel Adhisaya Manithan (1990), and Kadhal Kadhai (2009), which faced scrutiny from the Central Board of Film Certification for its bold content. He began his career as a cinematographer with Ivargal Vithyasamanavargal (1980) and later explored action films in the late '90s and early 2000s. His final directorial venture was Oru Iyakkunarin Kadhal Diary (2017), and he last appeared as an actor in Gajaana (2025). Velu was previously married to actor-director P Jayadevi and later wed actor Shirley Das in 2017, who starred in Kadhal Kadhai. His last rites are scheduled for Sunday evening at Porur crematorium, with his body available for public homage at Valasaravakkam in Chennai from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon.
