Nashik: A bulker truck carrying fly ash crushed three members of a family and the driver of a car at Igatpuri's Mundhegaon, within the jurisdiction of the Ghoti police station. The accident occurred on the Nashik-Mumbai stretch of the Mumbai-Agra National Highway at 2pm on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Nityanand Sawant (62), Vidya Sawant (65), Veena Sawant (68) of Four Bungalows, Andheri, and car driver Dayaram, also from Mumbai.
Inspector Vijay Shinde, of the Ghoti police station, said, "The bulker truck and the car were both on their way to Mumbai. The truck overtook the car near Mundhegaon, and the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck toppled onto the car and crushed all its occupants."
Shinde said all four died on the spot, and the truck driver was arrested following a complaint of causing death by negligent driving. The truck was removed using a crane, and the bodies were sent to the Ghoti rural hospital for postmortem.
Police said the Sawants had gone to Mundhegaon for a Guru Pournima religious programme and had started the return journey when the accident occurred shortly after entering the highway.
Local residents and police responded promptly. The accident disrupted traffic movement for several hours until the vehicles were cleared after primary investigations. Police said the necessary panchanama was done immediately and that traffic congestion spanned a couple of kilometres on both sides.
