DRI arrests 2 in Rs 60 crore luxury furniture import scam in Mumbai
The DRI arrested Rizwan Iqbal Chunawala (49), the proprietor of Design Decode, and Sajid Hanif Jada (44), the ICE holder of Design Decode, under the Customs Act.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials launched an investigation into M/s Design Decode, an importer operating under Importer Exporter Code, which allegedly consistently undervalued branded luxury furniture consignments imported from overseas suppliers since September 2021.
During searches conducted at multiple premises, including the operational address of M/s Design Decode at Laxmi Industrial Estate, Andheri, officers recovered incriminating documents.
The recovered documents pointed towards systematic undervaluation and document manipulation aimed at evading customs duty, Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST), and Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS).
Since its inception, the importer imported consignments via 392 bills of entry amounting to a declared value of Rs 24 crore, whose actual value is worth ₹60 crore, resulting in huge evasion of import duties of Rs 20 crore, including customs duty, IGST, and SWS.

Chunawala admitted that M/s Design Decode was essentially a front created to import goods on behalf of Defurn Furniture Studio. He acknowledged being fully aware of the undervaluation scheme and confessed to playing an active role for personal financial gains. Jada also admitted his role in managing the warehouses where the undervalued imports were stored before delivery.
The DRI revealed that since its inception, M/s Design Decode imported 392 consignments with substantially undervalued invoices. Based on re-determined valuations, the total value of the imports is estimated at ₹60 crore, against which duties amounting to approximately Rs 20 crore were evaded.

Body of man who fell into open drain after stepping on broken slab found
Lucknow: The body of 43-year-old man, Suresh Lodhi, who fell into an overflowing drain after stepping on broken slab on Saturday morning, was recovered after 28 hours on Sunday near the IIM Road embankment, about 1 km from the accident site in Thakurganj's Radha Gram locality. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 5 lakh compensation from the CM fund and directed action against negligent officials. An additional Rs 4 lakh was provided from the disaster management fund, taking the total aid to Rs 9 lakh. Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar also initiated action against the errant officials. According to family members, Suresh was swept away by the strong current of the drain which was overflowing after heavy rain, around 7am on Saturday. The family alleged that despite complaints, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) started the rescue operation after three hours. Later, teams from SDRF and Suez India launched a rescue mission with over 100 personnel, but it was a local resident, Buddha, who eventually found the body, residents claimed. On the directives of the CM, municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar suspended junior engineer Raman Kumar for failing to inspect the area despite complaints received through IGRS and the control room. Assistant engineer Alok Kumar was also issued a show-cause notice. Cleaning contractor Ankit Kumar has been blacklisted and penalised. An FIR was also lodged against the vendor and the local BJP corporator. The commissioner said the work of drain cleaning in the area was of poor quality. Residents alleged that the drain slab was broken for months, and no one paid attention despite repeated complaints by residents and the victim's family. "No one helped us. We searched and found the body on our own. Who will look after my children now?" Suresh's wife, Renu, said. She demanded Rs 50 lakh as compensation which was supported by relatives and neighbours. Locals staged protest and shouted slogans against the municipal corporation and officials. Renu alleged that they had filed complaints twice about the broken drain slab, but no action was taken. "We had to get the drain outside our house repaired on our own," she said. Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar and senior officials inspected the site and ordered 24x7 monitoring through a control room. As road rage cases take violent turn in Bengaluru, 17 make it to rowdy list
Bengaluru: From brawls triggered by splashing rainwater to fatal confrontations on the road, Bengaluru has seen a steady rise in cases of road rage over the past 3.5 years. Between 2022 and May 2025, police registered 88 such cases across the city, leading to the arrest of 123 people, including two women. Seventeen of those arrested have been listed as 'C-rowdy sheeters', a category meant for first-time offenders whose behaviour during the incident is seen as particularly aggressive or threatening. Some of these individuals, including professionals with no prior criminal record, followed their victims to their homes or offices after the altercation, attacked them again, or extorted money through death threats. In a few instances, attackers went as far as vandalising the victim's home after the initial roadside confrontation. "These 17 persons acted beyond reason. They threatened their opponents aggressively, which is why we categorised them as C-rowdies. We'll monitor them for a year. If there are no further incidents, the rowdy-sheet will be closed," a senior cop said. The argument starts over a minor road-related issue but escalates because neither side can control their emotions. Often, family members or bystanders influence the situation, worsening it," he told TOI. When asked why people risk legal trouble despite knowing the consequences, he said: "In that moment, the aggressor is in a reactive mode. Legal consequences do not register." Delivery agent assaulted at traffic signal A 35-year-old food delivery agent was assaulted by three men near Modi Hospital Junction on West of Chord Road around midnight Saturday. The incident occurred after the delivery agent, Pemaram, refused to give way at a red signal. Pemaram, a resident of Rajajinagar, had just completed a delivery and was heading towards Navarang Theatre. At the junction, while waiting for the green signal, three men on a scooter honked and asked him to move through a narrow gap between vehicles. When he refused, they confronted him. "The trio got down from the scooter, started abusing me and then assaulted me. They beat me for nearly eight minutes," Pemaram told police. A crowd eventually gathered, forcing the attackers to flee. The assault disrupted traffic briefly at the junction. Pemaram sought treatment at KC General Hospital before lodging a complaint with Basaveshwaranagar police. Cops said efforts are on to trace and arrest the trio.

3 years gone, but bus station revamp project yet to start
Ghaziabad: A plan to modernise three of Ghaziabad's busiest bus terminals — Kaushambi, Sahibabad, and Old Bus Adda — has been hit by repeated delays and will now be completed by 2028, four years past the original target. Proposed in 2021 by Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), the project was meant to give depots an airport-like upgrade, including automated ticketing, digital information systems, AC lounges and enhanced security measures to offer passengers a modernised, comfortable experience. Together, the three depots operate around 800 buses daily, half of which run on long-distance routes to cities like Lucknow, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, and destinations in Bihar and Uttarakhand. Yet, progress on the Rs 484-crore revamp remains minimal. The revamped Kaushambi terminal is to be linked with Sahibabad and Old Bus Adda with Ghaziabad rapid rail stations to streamline multimodal transport. These three terminals are among 23 across the state selected for overhaul. The terminals are being developed under a PPP model. Tenders were floated in Dec 2022, and one firm was selected for all three projects. But delays in environmental approvals, clearance from the forest department required to cut down 25 trees at Kaushambi depot, has held up execution. A UPSRTC official said funds were deposited under CAMPA, or Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority, for clearance, but the wait has dragged on. Complicating matters further is the logistical challenge of relocating operations during construction. "UPSRTC had initially considered shifting bus operations from Kaushambi to Arthala, but that plan didn't materialise," the UPSRTC official added. "We are now exploring temporary relocation to Anand Vihar Bus Terminal."
