Thamizhachi takes up Medavakkam woes with Chengalpet collector

Time of India26-05-2025
Chennai: South Chennai MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian wrote to Chengalpattu district collector S Arunraj, urging immediate intervention to resolve a host of civic issues plaguing Medavakkam.
In her letter dated May 21, she said the area, which falls under her constituency, was grappling with poor roads, sanitation issues, visual pollution, and severe traffic violations—conditions she said were steadily worsening residents' quality of life. "The condition of internal roads near Medavakkam Junction, especially those connecting Jalladinpet, St John's School, and Perumbakkam, are in a dilapidated state," she wrote, noting large potholes, uneven surfaces, and eroded edges posed serious threats to motorists and pedestrians.
She flagged the stretch beneath the Medavakkam flyover as a major sanitation blackspot. "It has turned into an open dumping yard with mounds of garbage blocking the road, producing unbearable stench and obstructing movement," she said. The MP also pointed to heaps of illegally dumped construction materials and sand that were choking the road and footpaths, while metro-related dust and pollution were compounding health and visibility hazards.

Adding to residents' woes were traffic violations and lack of enforcement, she said. "Vehicles routinely drive on the wrong side and haphazardly park under the flyover, especially near commercial zones, creating gridlocks," she said. Thangapandian also criticized the unchecked defacement of public spaces with posters and banners, calling it a source of visual pollution.

Guest faculty teachers face uncertainty amid new appointments in state

Patna: The recent appointment of assistant professors across various disciplines—based on recommendations from the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC)—has left hundreds of long-serving guest faculty teachers in universities and colleges across the state in an uncertain position. Services of many of these teachers, who have been teaching for six to eight years, have not been renewed citing lack of vacancies, sparking widespread frustration and resentment among qualified youth. In protest, several affected guest faculty members at Patna University (PU) recently launched a hunger strike, demanding the renewal of their services against existing vacancies. The strike was called off only after PU authorities agreed to extend the contracts of some faculty members in select subjects. However, many others remain unaccommodated due to the lack of vacancies in their respective disciplines, according to PU sources. A guest lecturer from the physics department of Patna Science College expressed concern over the situation. He noted that all guest faculty members meet the University Grants Commission (UGC) eligibility criteria for assistant professors and have been teaching against substantive posts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Despite their dedication, their employment remains insecure, subject to abrupt termination at the discretion of university authorities. Currently, guest faculty members across Bihar's universities are paid an honorarium of Rs1,500 per class, capped at Rs 50,000 per month. This payment is made for only 11 months each year, with a mandatory one-month break before renewal—resulting in the loss of one month's pay. Additionally, they receive no compensation during summer vacations, further exacerbating their financial instability. A few months ago, the Bihar Legislative Council's education committee, led by MLC Ram Bachan Roy, recommended that guest faculty members—whose qualifications match those of regular teachers, who were appointed following the reservation roster, and who have served for five to six years—should be allowed to continue teaching until the age of 65, similar to regular faculty. Echoing this sentiment, Kanhaiya Bahadur Sinha, working president of the federation of university teachers' associations of Bihar (FUTAB), and general secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, MLC, have urged the chancellor and the state govt to regularise the services of these long-serving guest faculty members. HC stays govt notice on creation of STF police stns

1 2 Kolkata: A division bench of Calcutta High Court's Jalpaiguri circuit bench has stayed a Bengal govt gazette notification announcing the creation of two Special Task Force (STF) police stations and tying them up with two existing courts in two parts of the state. The state had set up the designated police stations — one in north Bengal and the other in south — to register FIRs and investigate offences under special acts like Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, Arms Act, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and Prevention of Money Laundering Act. "The entire scheme of BNSS has been sought to be frustrated, prima facie" by such a notification, said a bench of justices Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya and Uday Kumar, ordering an interim stay on it till Sept 15 or until further orders. If the notification is to be given force, then a person living in a remote area will never report an offence," Justice Bhattacharyya observed. The bench, however, held that FIRs already registered with the two STF police stations and the investigation thereafter would not be affected by the stay order but their fate shall depend on the outcome of the writ petition. The state, by a notification on Jan 31, created one STF police station at the STF HQ in Salt Lake for all south Bengal districts from Murshidabad to East Midnapore, other than areas under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police, and the other at Ambikanagar in Siliguri for all north Bengal districts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo By a subsequent notification on May 16, the govt tied up these police stations with the ACJM court, Bidhannagar and ACJM court, Siliguri. The additional advocate general pleaded that the executive action was well within the powers of state govt. However, the bench underscored the distinction between "local jurisdiction" of courts and determination of "local area" of police stations under BNSS. Having referred to the distinction, the bench held that the state had "picked and chosen" the local limits of police stations "at its whims". Many students from Dr Ambedkar College are the first in their families to receive higher education: CM

1 2 Nagpur: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday praised Dr Ambedkar College at Deekshabhoomi for its transformative role in uplifting marginalised communities through education, calling it a "legacy institution" that has lived up to the ideals of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Speaking at the college's Diamond Jubilee celebration, Fadnavis said it was a matter of pride that the Chief Justice of India, Justice Bhushan Gavai, could be part of the function at an institution co-founded by his late father, RS Gavai. "It's a meaningful coincidence — the son returning to the institution built by the father, now as the head of India's judiciary. We are proud of Justice Gavai, and this is a great moment for Nagpur. " He emphasised the institution's strong connection with Deekshabhoomi. "This is not just a college, it is a social movement. Many of the students graduating from here were the first in their families to receive higher education. That's real transformation," he said. The CM credited stalwarts like Sadanand Fulzele, Padmashree Dadasaheb Gaikwad, Dadasaheb Kumbhare, and his father for laying the foundation of the college during a time when such efforts were rare. He also recognised the contribution of former principals TK Damodaran and R Krishnakumar. "At the time, who would have thought a college with just Rs20,000, five teachers, five classrooms, and 300 students would become such a massive force of empowerment?" Today, the college boasts more than 6,000 students, 50 classrooms, and a wide multidisciplinary curriculum. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo It holds a NAAC 'A' accreditation and has been recognised by the UGC as a 'College with Potential for Excellence'. Fadnavis noted that in earlier decades, govt colleges were the preferred choice, but now "students' first preference is Ambedkar College — that speaks volumes about its stature." Fadnavis also acknowledged the contribution of former principals TK Damodaran and R. Krishna Kumar in the institution's growth. "This college has changed the lives of thousands and continues to serve the purpose for which it was founded — empowerment through education." Highlighting the growing role of women in education, Fadnavis said, "Out of five students felicitated today, four were girls. Of every 100 medals, 80 go to girls. This shift is welcome and reflects the belief of Dr Ambedkar — that real progress begins when women lead." Present on the occasion were Deekshabhoomi Smarak Samiti secretary Rajendra Gavai and educationist Vilas Gajghate, among others.
