Indonesia braces for annual Eid exodus as 146 million travel home
Locally known as 'mudik,' the Eid exodus is one of the world's greatest seasonal migrations, with travelers braving enormous traffic jams, thousands of kilometers and exhaustion to make it home for the holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.
'Our preparations for mudik are final, we are always working to improve our synergy across different departments, and we have come up with the best plans. Now it's time to monitor the implementation,' Pratikno, coordinating minister for human development and cultural affairs, said at a press conference on Wednesday.
About 33 million people are expected to use private cars this year, according to a survey conducted by the transportation ministry. Nearly 25 million people will be using buses, while over 23 million others are traveling by trains.
More than 164,000 transportation and security personnel are being deployed across 2,835 locations in Indonesia to oversee the safety of the travelers.
Authorities are expecting the exodus to peak on Friday, when around 12 million people will hit the road at the last minute to reach their hometowns for the first day of Eid.
'We've received reports that the number of travelers is increasing, now six days before Eid, and especially on highways, there is already a 7 percent increase,' National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said.
Mudik is often associated with hours of traffic jams, especially on the main island of Java, where the top four mudik destinations are located: Central Java, East Java, West Java and Yogyakarta.
'We are advising travelers to make the most use of incentives from the government, especially those who are traveling back to their hometowns … so that they can travel ahead and help scatter the flow of traffic,' Prabowo said.
The incentives include discounted prices for highway fees and various modes of transportation for early travelers, as well as free travel programs from regional governments.
Authorities have also prepared military helicopters and ambulances to help evacuate the wounded in case of traffic incidents.
'Besides our officers, the military will also deploy nine Hercules military planes,' Indonesian Military Chief Agus Subiyanto said. 'Should it be needed, we have prepared helicopters and ambulances, as well as excavators, fire trucks and tow trucks.'
Each year, hundreds of people die on the road during the Eid exodus. More than 4,500 accidents were recorded last year, claiming the lives of at least 507 people.
Heightened security measures along Indonesia's main roads will be in place until the end of the long holiday on April 8.

Bear roaming runway halts flights at Japanese airport
A bear roaming the runway forced a Japanese airport to cancel flights on Thursday and declare itself off-limits to passengers for the day. The black bear appeared at northern Japan's Yamagata Airport early morning, immediately prompting the closure of its runway. This first sighting resulted in a delay of up to an hour of four flights, before the animal reemerged around noon, this time 'running' on the runway. Airport staff used a car to chase it away and closed the runway again, with the bear still at large somewhere in the facility. 'Given the situation there is no way we can host plane arrivals now,' Yamagata Airport official Akira Nagai told AFP Thursday evening, adding the second closure led to 12 flight cancellations. With hunters brought in to set up a trap and police officers surrounding the airport to prevent the bear from escaping, 'we're in a stalemate now', Nagai said. The facility plans to keep the runway closed till around 8:00 pm, the official said. Human encounters with bears have reached record levels in Japan, with 219 people attacked and six deaths in the 12 months to April 2024. Last month, a bear sighting brought a premature end to a golf tournament in central Japan, with organizers citing safety precautions. Climate change affecting food sources and hibernation times, along with depopulation caused by an ageing society, are causing bears to venture into towns more frequently, scientists say.

Indonesia issues highest alert as volcano erupts
JAKARTA — One of Indonesia's most active volcanoes spewed a huge ash cloud more than 11 kilometers into the sky on Tuesday after officials issued the country's highest alert. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, erupted at 17:35 local time (10:35 BST), the country's volcanology agency said, sending the vast cloud above the tourist island of Flores. A 7km exclusion zone was in place around the crater of the 1,584m (one mile) high twin-peaked volcano. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The volcano erupted multiple times in November, killing nine people and forcing thousands to flee. The ash cloud also forced flight cancellations. Geology agency head Muhammad Wafid said no one should carry out any activities within 7km of the eruption, and warned of potential lahar floods — a type of mud or debris flow of volcanic materials — if heavy rain occurs. Residents were also urged to wear face masks to protect themselves from volcanic ash. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency meanwhile said that at least one village had been evacuated, and ash rain was reported in several others outside the exclusion zone. A spokesman called on residents around the volcano "to evacuate to safe locations" as tremors were still being detected, which indicated ongoing volcanic activity. Lewotobi Laki-laki's last eruption was in May, when authorities also raised the level to the most severe.
