Indonesian rescuers try to reach Brazilian after fall at volcano

Hikers flock to Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, for its stunning panoramic views. (File pic) JAKARTA : Indonesian rescuers tried Tuesday to reach a Brazilian tourist who fell down a ravine at a volcano popular with hikers after spotting her unmoving body, authorities said. The woman identified by relatives and media reports as Juliana Marins, 26, went missing on Saturday at Mount Rinjani on Lombok island, which neighbours Bali. Authorities think Marins fell and believe they sighted her on Monday but rescuers were held back because of bad weather. 'Yesterday morning we detected the victim. We deployed a team to the location, but we were hampered by the very steep terrain and the foggy weather,' Muhammad Hariyadi, head of Lombok's Mataram Search and Rescue Office, told AFP on Tuesday. 'When we detected her using a drone, she was not moving.' Rescuers said they were using thermal drones, mountaineering gear and a helicopter in a bid to reach the Brazilian, who was backpacking around Southeast Asia. 'One group is monitoring the evacuation using a thermal drone. The second team is doing the manual evacuation process with a rope as the main tool,' said Hariyadi. 'This morning around 50 rescuers have been dispatched, and we plan to send a helicopter team to scour the location.' An Instagram account set up by family and friends to call for her urgent rescue has amassed more than one million followers. 'Hang in there, Juliana! Help is on the way!' read a post on the account. The Brazilian embassy in Jakarta did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment. Marins' last posts on Instagram show her backpacking around Thailand and Vietnam before reaching Indonesia. Lombok island is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Rinjani, Indonesia's second-tallest volcano, for its panoramic views. In 2018 hundreds of hikers and guides became stranded by landslides on the mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the island. At least 17 were killed across the island including one on the mountain.

Indonesia to make e-commerce firms collect tax on sellers' sales

E-commerce platforms argue that the regulation could raise administrative costs and drive sellers away from online marketplaces. (Reuters pic) JAKARTA : Indonesia plans to implement new regulations requiring e-commerce platforms to withhold tax on their sellers' sales income in a bid to boost revenues, according to two industry sources informed of the move and a document seen by Reuters. The planned directive, which also aims to level the playing field with brick-and-mortar shops, could be announced as soon as next month, one of the sources said, as Southeast Asia's largest economy grapples with weak revenue collection. The changes would affect the country's main e-commerce operators, including ByteDance's TikTok Shop and Tokopedia, Sea Limited's Shopee, Alibaba-backed Lazada, Blibli and Bukalapak, one of the sources said. E-commerce platforms are opposing the regulation, arguing it could increase administrative costs and push sellers away from online marketplaces, said the sources, who were briefed on the plan by tax authorities. Indonesia introduced a similar regulation in late 2018, requiring all marketplace operators to share sellers' data and make them pay taxes on sales income, but withdrew it three months later due to a backlash from the industry. The sources asked not to be named as they were not authorised to speak publicly about the matter. Indonesia's finance ministry, which will be responsible for issuing the order, declined to comment. Indonesia's e-commerce industry association idEA would not confirm or deny details of the plan. However, it said the policy will affect millions of sellers if implemented. Finance ministry data showed revenues fell 11.4% year on year in the January to May period to US$61 billion due to low commodity prices, weak economic growth and disruptions to tax collection caused by a system upgrade. Indonesia's e-commerce industry, meanwhile is booming, with last year's estimated gross merchandise value of US$65 billion expected to grow to US$150 billion by 2030, according to a report by Google, Singapore state investor Temasek and consultancy Bain & Co. The sources said that under the new rule e-commerce platforms will be required to withhold and pass onto the authorities tax amounting to 0.5% of sales income from sellers with annual turnover of between 500 million rupiah and 4.8 billion rupiah. Those sellers are considered small and medium-sized enterprises and are already required to pay that tax directly. One of the sources added that there was also a penalty proposed for late reporting by e-commerce platforms. The sources' comments were corroborated by the contents of an official presentation the tax office made to operators that was seen by Reuters. In addition to the expected additional administration costs, e-commerce platforms are expressing concern the current tax system, which has been facing technical problems after an upgrade at the start of the year, will struggle to handle the amount of data the tax office is asking marketplaces to share.

Indonesia begins US$5.9bil EV battery project despite environmental fears

Halmahera island has seen environmental damage increase as operations have grown at a large industrial park. (AFP pic) JAKARTA : Indonesia broke ground today on a US$5.9 billion megaproject for EV battery production backed by Chinese giant CATL, despite NGOs raising concerns over a lack of environmental guarantees. Indonesia is the world's largest nickel producer and it is trying to capitalise on its vast reserves, with a 2020 export ban spurring a domestic industrial boom of the key metal used in EV batteries and stainless steel. The EV battery project will include a US$4.7 billion investment on the eastern island of Halmahera and a US$1.2 billion investment in West Java, energy minister Bahlil Lahadalia said in a speech alongside president Prabowo Subianto. 'According to my calculation, it won't take long, in probably between five to six years we will be able to reach energy self-sufficiency,' Prabowo said at a groundbreaking ceremony in Karawang, West Java. Bahlil said the Halmahera complex will focus on mining, smelting and production of cathodes which are a key component in rechargeable batteries. The West Java complex will focus on battery cell production, the minister said. The two politicians did not say when the megaproject was slated to be operational, but Indonesian officials have said a CATL plant in Halmahera would open in March next year. Alongside CATL, the Halmahera complex is backed by China's Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt and Indonesia's state-owned Antam. Climate Rights International and Greenpeace Indonesia this week issued a call for greater assurances from Jakarta that measures were in place to protect the surrounding environment at the bigger complex in eastern Halmahera. Environmental group Mining Advocacy Network (Jatam) said in a statement Saturday that Jakarta was 'chasing vague economic growth while consciously ignoring the people's scream' to end damage to the environment and residents' livelihoods. Halmahera, a once-pristine island in the Maluku archipelago, has seen environmental damage increase as operations have grown at a large industrial park that hosts the world's largest nickel mine. A CRI report this month warned the Indonesian government was allowing environmental damage to go unchecked around the Weda Bay mine and the industrial park that hosts it. An AFP report last month detailed how the home of the nomadic Hongana Manyawa tribe was being eaten away by mining operations there.
