Italy defends Women's Volleyball Nations League title

Warsaw, July 28 (UNI) Italy retained its FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League (VNL) title in Lodz, Poland, rallying from a set down to defeat Brazil 3-1 in the championship final. Opposite Ekaterina Antropova led Italy with a match-high 18 points, including 13 kills, four blocks and one ace on Sunday evening. Outside hitter Myriam Sylla added 16 points, while Gabriela Guimaraes paced Brazil with 15 points. The reigning Olympic champion, coached by veteran Julio Velasco, has now extended its winning streak to 29 matches. Italy looked set to claim the opening set after building a 19-15 lead, but Brazil responded with six consecutive points. A spike by Guimaraes and a block from Julia Gambatto Kudiess gave Brazil set point, and Guimaraes sealed the set 25-22 with a precise attack. Italy answered strongly in the second set, racing to an 8-4 advantage and maintaining control. Paola Egonu led the way with five points as Italy evened the match with a 25-18 win. West Indies Punished For Slow Over-Rate In Fourth T20I Against Australia

Last Updated: West Indies were fined 10% of their match fee for a slow over-rate in the fourth T20I against Australia. Captain Shai Hope accepted the sanction. Australia leads the series 4-0. West Indies have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee for being two overs short of the required rate, even after accounting for time allowances, during the fourth T20I against Australia in St. Kitts on Sunday. 'In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time," the ICC stated. Captain Shai Hope accepted the sanction proposed by the ICC match officials, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. West Indies have yet to secure a win on Australia's current inbound tour, having lost the Test series 3-0 and now trailing 4-0 in the T20I series. The T20Is have been high-scoring matches, with Australia successfully chasing targets over 200 in each of the last two games. In the third match, the hosts were undone by a Tim David blitz, with the batter scoring the fastest T20I century by an Australian. West Indies performed better in the fourth T20I, but fifties from Josh Inglis and Cameron Green, along with a quick 47 from Glenn Maxwell, helped Australia secure the win in the final over. They'll now aim to end the series on a high note when the two sides meet again at the same venue on Tuesday. Flamengo beats Mineiro to go top in Brazil's Serie A

Rio De Janeiro, July 28 (UNI) Leo Ortiz scored late as Flamengo returned to the top of Brazil's Serie A with a 1-0 home win over Atletico Mineiro. The result at the Maracana Stadium leaves Flamengo with 36 points, two clear of second-placed Cruzeiro. Atletico Mineiro is 13th in the 20-team standings with 20 points so far. "It was difficult to break them down because they are very solid defensively," Ortiz told reporters after the match. "Today we managed to get the winning goal from a set piece, which shows that we're able to find solutions when games become difficult." In other fixtures on Sunday, Vasco da Gama drew 1-1 at Internacional, Bahia cruised to a 3-0 home win over Juventude, Sao Paulo prevailed 3-1 at home to Fluminense, and Ceara won 2-1 at Cruzeiro.
