LAHAD DATU (July 21): Police have detained a woman suspected of abandoning her newborn baby boy in Kampung Burung, Jalan Bakawali, here last Friday.
Lahad Datu District Police Chief ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail said the 30-year-old woman was detained at the Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters yesterday after giving her statement.
'Initial investigations found that the woman gave birth at home and placed her baby outside the house in a panic after delivering,' he said when contacted here today.
Dzulbaharin stated the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning a child, which carries a penalty of up to seven years' imprisonment, or a fine, or both, if convicted.
Last Friday, media reported that a baby boy was found by a member of the public wrapped in cloth in front of a house in the village at 3:06 a.m.
The baby was sent to Lahad Datu Hospital for further treatment but died at 7:02 p.m. due to premature birth.

"Based on their modus operandi, they operate in groups and possess skills in stealing money. 'Checks on their travel records, as well as the authenticity of their passports, are still being made by the Immigration Department,' he told the media here on Monday (Aug 4). DCP Alwi said investigators are also looking into the suspects' possible involvement in cases in other states. DCP Alwi had said that from Wednesday to Friday (July 30 to Aug 1), police received three reports of cash thefts involving tourists from Taiwan, the Netherlands and Syria in the Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang areas. He said a team from George Town police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department then carried out Ops Tourist to arrest the suspects. During the arrest, police also seized multiple foreign currencies, two vehicles, and a packet of ganja, he added. In the incident which occurred around 5.50pm, the suspect entered the premises and posed as a customer before taking the opportunity to flee with the gold bracelet shown by the salesperson. Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said they received a report about the incident around 8.49pm from a 27-year-old female salesperson. "The complainant stated that while she was working at the gold shop, a local man came in and said he wanted to buy a gold chain for his wife. The suspect then chose a gold bracelet and, when the complainant turned to get a calculator, the man immediately fled with the jewellery," he said in a statement last Saturday (Aug 2).
