SAPS destroys 6 million ml of illegal alcohol in Tshwane
The destruction took place on Wednesday, 21 May 2025, at the Tshwane Metro Water works in Pretoria-Central.
SAPS officers, under the command of District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine and overseen by Brigadier Kushie Pietersen, Station Commander of Brooklyn SAPS, carried out the disposal.
The alcohol was seized during year-long enforcement efforts across all 36 police stations in the district.
These included compliance inspections, targeted raids, and high-density operations as part of Operation Shanela.
Police made most of the confiscations after finding traders violating the Liquor Act. Offences included selling alcohol without a licence or running illegal outlets.
SAPS has warned that illegal alcohol trading contributes to a range of crimes and societal issues, including domestic violence, assault and public disorder.
Major-General Thine emphasised the need to address the socio-economic consequences of alcohol abuse which strain both policing and healthcare resources.
'We will not hesitate to act against those who violate the law. Non-compliant establishments will face fines, closure and the confiscation of all liquor on the premises,' Thine said.
Law enforcement operations aimed at curbing the illegal sale and distribution of alcohol will continue throughout Tshwane.
SAPS has urged liquor traders and restaurant owners to fully comply with licence conditions or risk losing their stock and operating permits.
Police say removing illicit liquor from circulation is vital to restoring public order and fostering safer communities.

Police hope the information can lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the suspects involved. According to a statement released by SAPS, four suspects were involved. "It is alleged that at approximately 15:30, a female public prosecutor arrived home in Lotton Street, Young Park. While still seated in her vehicle, a Toyota Etios, four unknown suspects wearing masks stopped with a white VW Polo in the street. Two men arrested in connection with KwaZulu-Natal political killings

Image: Supplied Two men who were arrested by the SAPS' KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team in connection with the murder of DA Councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu appeared in Howick Magistrate's Court yesterday. Their arrests came just two days after the unit arrested a former Municipal Manager in connection with the killing of the former ANC Youth League Secretary General, Sindiso Magaqa. One of the suspects arrested in the Ndlovu matter was Amanxamalala Traditional Authority's Inkosi Simphiwe Zuma, who is related to the former and current Umkhonto WeSizwe party President Jacob Zuma. Zuma was arrested alongside Thabo Mathonsi-Chonco. Both Zuma and Mathonsi-Chonco were out on bail for a separate murder case. Although the latest charges against Inkosi Zuma remain unclear, Mathonsi-Chonco was accused of conspiracy to commit murder and the murder of Ndlovu on December 23, 2023. A source informed the Daily News that Buthelezi's charges were withdrawn on July 29 after he agreed to testify for the National Prosecuting Authority as a Section 204 witness. Police dismiss social media reports claiming kidnapped Pretoria farmer found dead
The SAPS has dismissed social media rumours claiming that prominent farmer and businessman Jerry Boshoga has been found dead. The Witness reports that Boshoga (46), from Silver Lakes in Pretoria, was kidnapped in Centurion in November last year. His abductors initially demanded R25m in ransom, later lowering the demand to R10m. Since his disappearance, the family has received disturbing videos allegedly showing Boshoga being assaulted and pleading for his life. In one of the videos, Boshoga, clearly injured and with a cloth stuffed in his mouth, is heard appealing to his mother: 'Please pay, pay now so they can release me. It is too bad. I really need you. Please pay everything they want, I am begging you…' In another recording, he begs his wife to ask his father to raise the money. The footage sparked widespread concern and led to a national outcry for his safe return. Yesterday, posts began circulating on social media claiming that Boshoga had been found dead. SAPS has labelled these reports as false and irresponsible. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, saying the investigation is ongoing and at a 'very sensitive stage'. 'The SAPS can confirm that the businessman has not been found alive or deceased. These unverified social media claims are misleading and have caused unnecessary trauma, panic and anxiety to his mother, wife and children.' She confirmed that police remain in close contact with the Boshoga family, who will be informed of any developments first by the investigating team. Boshoga was last seen in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion, after telling family he was meeting someone. When his brother could not reach him later that day, a WhatsApp message from an unknown number was sent to Boshoga's wife, along with a voice note in which he said: 'I've been kidnapped.' Mathe has called for responsible social media engagement, particularly in sensitive cases such as kidnappings, where misinformation can worsen the suffering of families involved.
