Malaysia win fourth medal in Doha

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia picked up their fourth medal at the Under-18 Asian Junior Championships in Doha after Kho Yek Zhen-Affan Azmi delivered a hard-fought bronze in the boys' doubles on Tuesday.
The national team debutants combined for a 12-game total of 2,582 to place third behind a dominant Qatari one-two finish.
Talal Al Marri-Masaed Al Muraikhi clinched the gold with 2,690, while Hassan Al Muraikhi-Abdulrahman Al Doseri followed close behind on 2,669.
Although they missed out on the title, Yek Zhen-Affan made a strong impression to keep Malaysia's medal momentum going.
Malaysia have now won medals in all four events contested thus far, with two golds and two bronzes in the bag.
Qurratu'ain Izdihar Pozi has emerged as the standout performer, delivering two golds in the girls' singles and doubles (with Adelia Nur Syazalee), while Aqil Faizal contributed a bronze in the boys' singles.
Malaysia will be gunning for more glory in the boys' and girls' team events starting Wednesday.
There's also a strong chance of adding two more golds through the All-Events category, with Malaysians currently dominating both standings.
In the boys' division, Sayed Abdullah and Wan Muhammad Ikram Wan Mazlan occupy the top two spots with 2,650 and 2,647 pinfalls respectively.
In the girls', Qurratu'ain leads with 2,485 ahead of Adelia on 2,391 — putting the former in line for a remarkable third gold in Doha.
Team manager Maradona Chok said: "It's been a solid run so far, and I'm proud of how our bowlers have stepped up in every event.
"We've hit the podium each time, and that gives us great momentum heading into the team events — which are always seen as the ultimate titles. The players are motivated, and we'll be going all out to keep the medal streak going."

Runner Wan Fazri eyes 40-year-old national record

KUALA LUMPUR: Wan Fazri Wan Zahari aims to break the 40-year-old national men's 800m record by this year. B. Rajkumar set the four-decade-old mark of 1:47.37 at the 1985 Asian Championships in Jakarta. Wan Fazri, who had just completed his degree in sports science at Universiti Malaya, came close to rewriting Rajkumar's record with a personal best of 1:47.64 at the Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea in May. The 23-year-old Kelantan middle distance runner said it would be a dream come true if he breaks one of the oldest national records in athletics. "I came very close to breaking it in the Asian Championships, and the time (1:47.64) was the second fastest ever recorded by a Malaysian in a competition. "I will try to break the national record at the World Athletics Tour in Odisha, India, on Aug 10. "I will be competing against some of the top Asian runners there, and this will help me to clock a good time," he said. At the recent World University Games in Germany, Wan Fazri clocked 1:49.53 in the heats and 1:49.87 in the semi-finals. Wan Fazri, who has been training under Jironi Ridzuan for the last two years, said he couldn't run a good time in Germany due to lack of rest. Eight other national athletes will also compete in Odisha. They are Azeem Fahmi (100m), Danish Iftikhar Roslee (100m), Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam (200m), Sayyid Amin Roslan (200m), Tan Zhi Hang (long jump), Andre Anura Anuar (triple jump), Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (100m) and Nur Aishah Rofina Aling (100m).

FIFA ban on Kelantan club over soon?

KUALA LUMPUR: Kelantan The Real Warriors (KTRW) president Tan Sri Anuar Musa has claimed that the club are close to getting the Fifa transfer ban on them lifted. But he added that the process is far more complex than outsiders may realise. Anuar said today that eight of the nine FIFA cases (salaries not paid to players) against KTRW — inherited from their previous team, Kelantan Darul Naim FC — have been settled. "We are now waiting for Fifa to confirm it in their system. Usually, Fifa takes about five working days to update it." Anuar's comments come amid allegations by former Kelantan striker Mohamad Ghaddar, who is now a player agent. Ghaddar has hit out at Anuar and the club's CEO, Datuk Irwan Rizal Ali Napiah, following a failed transfer deal involving Syrian defender Moaiad Alkhouli. Ghaddar claimed he personally financed Alkhouli's travel to Malaysia, only for the club to go silent after the player passed his medical. Ghaddar's claims have reignited questions over Kelantan's finances and also the Malaysian Football League's decision to still allow them to compete in the 2025-2026 Super League. However, Anuar insists that KTRW are doing everything by the book. "When a sanction is imposed, the release must go through a rather long process. Clubs must be careful and not treat this lightly," he said. "All these aspects must be properly managed. The process of rescuing the club is not as simple as some people may think but we are committed to doing it. "We must also ensure that the International Transfer Certificate for each player is properly completed before registration can happen," he said. Despite Anuar's reassurances, KTRW's name remains on Fifa's player registration ban list. Malaysia currently has 18 complaints at FIFA, more than any other Asian nations, with Kelantan responsible for eight of them. KTRW have been barred from registering new players and can only retain players from last season, including those from their President's Cup squad.

Numbers mean nothing as men's doubles eye redemption in Paris

PETALING JAYA: Numbers alone won't win titles, and the doubles squad know that having four men's doubles pairs at the World Championships is no guarantee of success. Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King were the last pair to make the cut for the world meet from Aug 25-31 in Paris. They were initially second on the reserve list but earned a spot following the withdrawal of several other pairs. The world No. 24 duo will join Asian champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, as well as independent pair and former world No. 1s Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, in the prestigious meet. National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky welcomed the strong representation for the world meet, but was quick to point out that stiff competition awaits. 'Having more pairs doesn't necessarily translate to success. What's important is preparing well in order to win,' said Rexy. 'This isn't about how many pairs are going to Paris, it's about how well we train and how much we put into it. Rexy's concerns are valid, as five months ago the men's doubles camp suffered a major blow at the All-England. Malaysia had six pairs in the world's oldest tournament, with the added presence of newly-appointed Indonesian coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, but the shuttlers returned empty-handed and delivered a disappointing performance in Birmingham. Still, Rexy is hoping his players can produce better results this time around, especially Arif-Roy King, who will be making their debut at the tournament. 'My hope is that they can deliver a strong performance in their first World Championships appearance,' he added. The players now have three weeks to sharpen their gameplay before departing for Paris on Aug 21, five days after the singles shuttlers, who are scheduled to leave on Aug 16. Leong Jun Hao, K. Letshanaa, and Justin Hoh will first head to Denmark for intensive training with the Danish national squad before regrouping with the rest of the team in Paris. The tournament draw is expected to take place on Aug 13.
