Maid among 12 foreign women held for working as GROs in Bukit Mertajam
Enforcement Division director Basri Othman said checks revealed the woman held a valid permit to work as a maid but had violated the terms by working as a guest relations officer (GRO) at night.
Further inspection showed some of the women were employed in factories, had overstayed their permits, and several lacked identification documents.
'In the operation at 1.30 am, the women — three Indonesians, seven Thais, and two Vietnamese — aged between 20 and 35, were found entertaining customers,' he told reporters.
Several women attempted to escape through the back door but were swiftly detained.
Basri said preliminary investigations found all 12 had been working at the premises for about six months, earning between RM150 and RM250 per hour.
The case is being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/1963, with detainees taken to the Seberang Jaya Immigration Office before transfer to the Jawi Immigration Detention Depot. - Bernama

A syndicate used the house to store the drugs before selling them locally and overseas. A 30-year-old Malaysian man, who works as the syndicate's coordinator and transporter, was detained in the raid on July 29. Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said 234kg of syabu hidden in 225 tea packages and 205.7kg of ketamine in 200 tea packages were seized. 'The drugs are worth RM17.78mil. They could have been supplied to 1.8 million drug users,' he told reporters at the police headquarters yesterday. The detained suspect was paid RM7,000 for each trip of drugs transported, he added. 'We believe he already made 10 trips before being caught. The house was rented by the syndicate for RM6,000 per month for a year,' he said. Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate has been active since June. 'We believe the drugs had just arrived from a neighbouring country on the northern part of the Malaysian border. 'The drugs were transported by land.' Comm Hussein said the NCID planned the operation within a month after receiving credible intelligence. 'Given the size of the drugs, the syndicate is huge with good network overseas,' he said. 'The NCID will continue to track down other members of the syndicate and the mastermind. 'We also seized two cars, three luxury watches and a mobile phone.' In another case, 42.3kg of ganja buds worth RM1.48mil were seized at an apartment in Taman Kuchai Entrepreneurs on July 29. 'We detained a local man along with a man and two women from Vietnam. 'The local man was the syndicate's transporter and coordinator while the foreign suspects had arrived in Malaysia on July 8. 'The Vietnamese women also worked as guest relation officers,' he said. The drugs seized were meant to be distributed in the Klang Valley, he said. Comm Hussein said the NCID will continue to combat the drug menace but needs the cooperation of the public. Couple in Ford Mustang dies after crash into power poles near Segamat
SEGAMAT: A married couple died tragically after the car they were travelling in skidded and crashed into power poles at KM13 of Jalan Segamat-Kuantan on Monday (August 4) evening. Segamat police chief Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the accident is believed to have occurred when a Ford Mustang driven by the 50-year-old local man and his 30-year-old wife was heading towards Segamat. He said the driver lost control of the classic American automobile which skidded and veered left, then hit two electric poles whereby both victims suffered serious injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. 'The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and further investigations are still being carried out. Anyone with related information can contact the (traffic division of) Segamat police headquarters,' he said in a statement. Meanwhile, Segamat fire and rescue station operations commander Senior Fire Officer (PBK) Abd Rahim Taufik said after receiving a distress call at 1.46 pm, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) with six personnel was dispatched to the scene. 'On arrival at the accident scene, the operations team had to extricate the two victims in the car using special equipment. 'Both victims, Mohd Izuddin Harmaini, 51, and Nur Syamimi Rosli, 36, were pronounced dead,' he said, adding that their bodies were handed over to police for further action and the operation ended at 3.36 pm. - Bernama
