Lucknow: Cash was recovered from the high-security barrack of slain don
Atiq Ahmed
's son
Ali Ahmed
in Prayagraj's Naini Central Jail, prompting authorities to suspend deputy jailer Kanti Devi and head warden Sanjay Dwivedi Thursday.
On June 17, a CCTV feed monitored by the DG prisons at Lucknow headquarters showed Ali counting cash inside his barrack. The footage showed his lawyer handing him Rs 1,100 in cash after a meeting on the jail premises. Head warden Sanjay Dwivedi, in charge of checking the lawyer's belongings, allowed him entry without proper scrutiny.
The DG prisons alerted Prayagraj SP Rajesh Srivastava who conducted a surprise inspection of Ali's cell.
While official sources confirmed the seizure of Rs 1,100, jail insiders claimed that up to Rs 1.5 lakh in cash was found. A departmental probe has been ordered.
Inmates are prohibited from keeping cash inside the prison as per the jail manuals. Instead, a coupon system is used to purchase items from the jail canteen. Coupons in denominations between Rs 100 and Rs 500 are issued in exchange for deposited money.
Ali has been in judicial custody since July 30, 2022, in the sensational Umesh Pal murder case.
Ali is the second son of Atiq Ahmed. His eldest brother Umar is in Lucknow Jail, his third brother Asad was killed in a police encounter, while his younger siblings, Ahjam and Aban, are pursuing studies in Prayagraj.

The Maharashtra government moved the Supreme Court challenging a Bombay High Court order on Monday acquitting all 12 persons accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case. The High Court said that the prosecution had 'utterly failed' in establishing the guilt of the 12 men. This came nearly 10 years after a special court had sentenced five of them to death and others to life imprisonment. It remarked that while punishing the perpetrators of a crime is an essential step, creating a 'false appearance of having solved a case' leads to a misleading sense of resolution. The Supreme Court will hear the matter on Thursday. The Supreme Court refused to examine the legality of the directives issued by the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments requiring eateries along the Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage route to display quick response codes with their owners' identities. The bench reiterated that the eateries must display their licences and registration certificates as required by law. The petitioners had argued that the governments' orders violated the court's 2024 interim order that prohibited vendors being forced to disclose their identities. The pleas had contended that the directives not only undermine the spirit of the court's stay, but also risks discriminatory profiling, particularly of vendors from minority communities, under the guise of public safety and licencing requirements. An Assam Police constable has said that his son is among nine Muslims of Bengali origin who have been detained in Gurugram since Sunday on suspicion of being undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants. Sannat Ali, a constable in the Assam Industrial Security Force, told Scroll that his son, 23-year-old Ashraful Islam, is a resident of Barbala village in Barpeta district. He had gone to Haryana on July 11 to work at a construction site, said Ali. Ali said that his son had submitted his voter ID card, school certificates, Aadhaar card and PAN card, which were not accepted by the police. 'They call them illegal Bangladeshis,' Ali alleged. He added: 'We have sent more documents like my service identity card and voter cards. Senior police officials have contacted me this morning. They are working to release him.' An assistant commissioner of police-rank in Gurugram told Scroll that the action was taken as per the Union home ministry's guidelines to verify the credentials of persons suspected to be undocumented migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. A day after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as the vice president, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished him good health and said that the Rajya Sabha chairperson had 'got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities'. Dhankhar had cited medical reasons for stepping down with immediate effect on Monday, which was the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Several Opposition leaders raised questions about the timing of Dhankhar's resignation. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that there were 'far deeper reasons' behind Dhankhar's decision.

" Kamaa Ke Khana Chahiye": Chief Justice On Mumbai Home, BMW, Alimony Demand

New Delhi: A woman's petition for a large alimony -- a house in Mumbai and Rs 12 crore as maintenance -- in a marital dispute case prompted Chief Justice of India BR Gavai to note that she is highly qualified and must earn her livelihood. When the Chief Justice asked what she wanted, the woman replied that she wanted a house in Mumbai, Rs 12 crore as maintenance and a high-end BMW car. "But that house is in Kalpataru... one of the good builders. You are an IT person. You have done your MBA. You are in demand in Bengaluru, Hyderabad... Why don't you work?" the Chief Justice replied. "You had a marriage for just 18 months. And you also want a BMW?" he added, noting that the woman was practically asking for an alimony of Rs 1 crore for every month of her 18-month marriage. To this, the woman replied, "But he is very rich. And he sought the nullity of the marriage, claiming that I am schizophrenic." Senior Advocate Madhavi Divan, appearing for the husband, told the court, "She has to work also. Everything cannot be demanded like this." "Do I look schizophrenic, my lords?" the woman asked. The Chief Justice then reminded the petitioner that she cannot claim properties belonging to her estranged husband's father. The woman, who was representing herself, told the bench that her husband worked as a Citibank manager and also runs two businesses. "I wanted a child, but he didn't give me a child. He filed for divorce, saying that I am schizophrenic," she said. She also alleged that her husband forced her to quit her previous job. The court then went through the husband's tax returns as his lawyers pointed out that his income had declined after he quit the job. The Chief Justice then told the woman to "be satisfied" with the flat and take up a "good job". "Or you better take those 4 crore, find a good job in Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore... there is a demand in IT centres," he said. "Aap itni padi likhi hai. Aapko khudko mangna nahi chahiye aur khudko kama ke khana chahiye (You are so educated, you must not ask and earn your livelihood)," the Chief Justice said. The order in the case has been reserved.
