Liverpool handed one-off chance to disprove transfer market's biggest myth
Liverpool have already broken from their long-held recruitment strategy in seismic fashion. Now they have an opportunity to disprove or embellish one of the transfer market's great myths as Arne Slot's team jet off on their pre-season tour of Asia.
With Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong already in the door from Bayer Leverkusen, a reported £87m offer for Eintracht Frankfurt goalscorer Hugo Ekitike could see their spend on players who spent last season in Germany total an eye-watering £233m.
And that, predictably, has fired up talk of the Bundesliga Tax. Yet again.
Anfield regulars will already know quite a bit about that theory and at Stamford Bridge it became known as the more alliterative Timo Tax following Werner's travails.
A quick scroll through the full list of arrivals and the expensive flops are quick to jump off the page. Jadon Sancho, Mahmoud Dahoud, Niclas Fullkrug, Orel Mangala, Marcel Sabitzer. You get the idea.
Various analytical minds have produced fascinating data spreadsheets in recent seasons, arguing that the gap in quality between the leagues is between 12 and 17 per cent.
That suggests fees should be inflated and deflated accordingly and makes it inevitable that
Except the reality, as ever, is a bit more nuanced. And Liverpool in particular have signed well from the Bundesliga in recent years with more success stories than flops.
Since the start of this decade Liverpool have signed eight players from the Bundesliga, including Wirtz and Frimpong. Four of the other six played a major role in last season's title win - while the other two, Thiago Alcantara and Ozan Kabak, are no longer at the club.
It would be remiss to ignore that Manchester City have also done rather well with deals for Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Omar Marmoush, Leroy Sane.
But the problem in 2025's era of more and more desperate social media hyperbole is that for Wirtz, Frimpong and, more likely than not, Ekitike, the pressure will be immediate.
A slow start and the comparisons and catcalls will come. Liverpool's recruitment department will be chastised for overpaying on Bundesliga talent when everyone knows the majority can't hack the intensity of English football.
The players will be told by anonymous accounts on X and Instagram that they should head back to the Ruhr or Bavaria.
Do well and the Bundesliga Tax argument will, hopefully, fall away quietly.

No one can afford to buy Alexander Isak, says ex-Newcastle player John Anderson
That is the view of former Magpies defender John Anderson amid frenzied speculation over the Sweden international's future on Tyneside following his absence from the club's first pre-season friendly at Celtic on Saturday. The 25-year-old striker hit the headlines once again last week when Premier League champions Liverpool indicated they would be prepared to offer £120million – around £30m shy of Newcastle's hands-off valuation – for him should he become available. However, Anderson told the PA news agency: 'Once you've got good players and you've got very, very good players, they're always going to be linked with other teams. That's always been the nature of the game and that's never, ever going to go away. 'I just don't think anybody at this moment in time can afford Isak and that's the truth of it. 'There's a lot of speculation about whether he's going to sign a new contract and have the club offered him a new contract – I don't think the boy is in any hurry to sign a new contract because he's got three years left on his present deal. 'Why would he be?' Head coach Eddie Howe revealed after the 4-0 defeat at Celtic Park that Isak had been sent home from Glasgow after a pre-season training camp in Austria because he was never going to play any part in the game as he manages his return from a groin injury. Howe did not want him sitting in the stands as the rumours gathered pace, despite his club's insistence that he is simply not for sale. Anderson said: 'It's a high-profile game, the champions of Scotland against a side that's qualified for the Champions League, but I think all the speculation would have been about Isak sitting in the stand rather than being focused on the game.' The former Republic of Ireland defender, who now covers the Magpies' games as a co-commentator for BBC Radio Newcastle, has witnessed Isak's meteoric rise since his £63m arrival from Real Sociedad during the summer of 2022 and knows how vital his retention is. He said: 'Oh God, he's huge. It's okay getting whatever you get for him, but how do you replace a player like that? That's the bottom line. 'You've got all the money in the world, yes, but can you get a player in who can do what he does?' Anderson played alongside Kevin Keegan and Peter Beardsley at St James' Park and watched Alan Shearer scored a record 206 goals for the club and he believes Isak is a special talent. He said: 'Shearer was a great out-and-out goalscorer, but this boy has got everything. Not only does he score goals, but he creates goals, he makes space for other people, he frightens the life out of defenders with his movement. 'And at the age that he's at, he's still got his prime years ahead of him. He's only going to get better.'

Club expect to receive official Man Utd transfer bid for goalkeeper 'soon'
Manchester United have firmed up their interest in Senne Lammens and Royal Antwerp are expecting a bid for the goalkeeper in due course, according to reports in Belgium. Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon remain United's only additions of the summer transfer window on the back of the club's wretched 2024/25 campaign under Ruben Amorim. But the Red Devils are understood to made a significant breakthrough in their attempts to sign Bryan Mbeumo and forward's move from Brentford is set to be officially confirmed over the coming days. Determined to further strengthen Amorim's squad from back to front, United's hierarchy will quickly focus their attentions on finding an upgrade for Andre Onana once Mbeumo arrives through the doors at the Theatre of Dreams. 'The first time I heard it, I thought, 'Wow! Immediately a world team is following you', and that is special,' Lammens said. Liverpool FC agree fee of up to £79million for striker Hugo Ekitike
Liverpool FC have agreed a deal worth up to £79million for striker Hugo Ekitike. The Reds have agreed to pay a guaranteed £69m to sign the France Under-21 international, with a further £10m possible in add-ons. Ekitike has been given permission by club Eintracht Frankfurt to travel to Merseyside to complete the deal, with the Reds hoping he can join the squad on their pre-season tour in Asia. Manchester United and Newcastle United have been among the interested parties but Premier League champions Liverpool look set to sign the striker. The 23-year-old scored 22 goals in all competitions for the German club after making his loan move from Paris St Germain permanent last summer. It would be the second time this year that Eintracht Frankfurt have sold one of their key players to an English club, after Egyptian Omar Marmoush joined Manchester City in January. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and some medical staff did not travel with the Reds to Hong Kong on Sunday in order to complete the signing. The Reds are looking to build on manager Arne Slot's successful first season at the club, where they won the Premier League title. Ekitike would become Liverpool's seventh signing of the summer, taking their spending to nearly £300 million. The striker would join new recruits Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman.
