Scientists Develop Cleaner Coal Processing Technology for High-Tech Carbon Materials

Scientists from the Krasnoyarsk Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, working with colleagues from Mongolia, and China, have developed a coal processing method that offers a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional use, according to TV BRICS.
The technology converts up to 97.5 per cent of coal into polyaromatic hydrocarbons and resins – valuable raw materials for high-tech carbon products – while generating minimal waste and much lower levels of the carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene. This is reported by the official website of the

The international research team believes the technology could provide a sustainable option for the coal sector, helping to move beyond conventional coal burning. The materials produced can be used in making carbon fibre and other high-tech products.
The process involves dissolving coal in special liquid. When heated to around 380°C, the coal breaks down and turns into a concentrated mixture of polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Importantly, the choice of solvent influences the quality of the final product, particularly its aromatic structure, which determines properties like heat resistance and chemical stability – essential for carbon composites. The team found that coal tar as a solvent produced the most aromatic and chemically valuable material.
One of the major advantages of the method is its lower environmental impact. The content of benzo[a]pyrene in the processed material is much lower than in traditional coal tar pitch, and longer processing times help reduce harmful substances even further. Waste is kept to a minimum – no more than 8 per cent regardless of the solvent used – helping to cut down on pollutants released into the environment.

Young Scientists Gather in Moscow to Design Habitable Base for Venus Atmosphere

Ahmed Emam Bauman Moscow State Technical University (BMSTU) is currently hosting the 30th edition of the International Youth Scientific School 'Space Development: Theory and Practice' (SDTP-2025), bringing together young scientists and students from Russia and around the world for collaborative space research and innovation. This year's school has attracted 100 students attending in person and about 50 participating online. The central task for the teams is to develop a conceptual project titled 'Design of a Long-Term Habitable Base in the Atmosphere of Venus.' The participants will present their final proposals on 18 July, which will be assessed by a jury of space industry experts, scientists, professors, and cosmonauts. Russia's Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, Olga Petrova, highlighted the significance of the event, telling BRICS TV: 'It's incredibly important that students from various universities and academic backgrounds come together here to immerse themselves in the world of space – its history, current developments, and future – over the course of two weeks. It's fantastic that the school is taking place this year on BMSTU's new campus. The space-themed atmosphere is truly inspiring.' Michael Quispe, a postgraduate student from Bolivia studying at the Moscow Aviation Institute, described the experience as a dream come true. 'These types of schools allow young specialists to deepen their knowledge in the space sector, exchange experiences, and hear insights from experts. It's incredibly valuable. I hope to one day organise something similar in Bolivia or other Latin American countries,' Quispe told BRICS TV. Veronika Kameneva, a BMSTU postgraduate student, emphasised the school's practical relevance for budding aerospace professionals. 'Teamwork shows how large-scale space projects are implemented, from orbital stations to Mars missions. Students can contribute to future engineering solutions. Visits to space centres and meetings with cosmonauts and industry experts are equally important, helping shape career paths,' Kameneva explained to BRICS TV. She also noted the benefits of the programme's international diversity, which exposes students to different educational methods and technical approaches. Since its founding, the SDTP school has welcomed over 3,500 participants from Russia and abroad. Global Energy Prize Announces Laureates

Yara Sameh The Global Energy Prize International Award Committee has announced the names of the 2025 laureates. Among the winners are researchers from China and Russia whose discoveries and innovations offer new solutions for the generation, transmission, and use of energy. The TV BRICS International Media Network served as an international partner of the event, according to TV BRICS. The award in the Conventional Energy category was presented to Jinliang He , chair of High Voltage Engineering Research Institute, professor at China's Tsinghua University (China), for the development of advanced ultra- and extra-high voltage power transmission technologies. Russia's representative, Vladislav Khomich , head of research at the Institute for Electrophysics and Electric Power of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), became the laureate in the New Ways of Energy Application category for his contribution to the development of pulsed energy and plasma technologies. This year, the prize received 90 applications from scientists across 44 countries. The shortlist included 15 nominees from 8 countries. The winners were announced at a ceremony held in Krasnoyarsk. The event was attended by Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory Mikhail Kotyukov ; President of the Global Energy Association Sergey Brilev ; Chairman of the Global Energy Prize International Committee Rae Kwon Chung , as well as jury members from China, South Africa, Russia, and other countries. 'The Krasnoyarsk Territory applied to host the awards announcement ceremony. The prize nominees presented many interesting ideas and projects; this is also a major educational effort,' said Kotyukov. The ceremony also featured a speech by Yulia Nazarkina , Head of the Africa Division at the International Cooperation Department of TV BRICS. 'The Global Energy Prize promotes scientific development and highlights the importance of international cooperation, which is why TV BRICS has long been a media partner of the award,' she emphasised. In addition, international media partners from BRICS countries took part in the event, including Piet Rampedi , Editor-in-Chief of African Times (South Africa); Pawan Kumar , Copy Editor of IANS (India); Liu Hongjie , Chief Correspondent of China Daily (China). A special highlight of the ceremony was a video greeting to the laureates from the International Space Station by cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov , Aleksey Zubritsky , and Kirill Peskov .
