Australian Open champion Keys stunned at Wimbledon

eNCA2 days ago
LONDON - Australian Open champion Madison Keys became the latest star to crash out of Wimbledon as the American sixth seed was stunned by Laura Siegemund on Friday.
Keys slumped to a 6-3, 6-3 loss against the German world number 104 in the third round on Court Two.
The 30-year-old is the fifth player among the top six seeds in the women's draw to suffer a surprise exit from this year's tournament.
Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini and Zheng Qinwen had already bowed out, though world number one Aryna Sabalenka is still alive.
Keys, who beat Sabalenka to clinch her maiden Grand Slam crown in Melbourne in January, is yet to make it past the quarter-finals in 11 visits to the All England Club.
She made 31 unforced errors in a lacklustre display against Siegemund.
It was a miserable way to spend the fourth of July for Keys while her compatriots celebrated the Independence Day holiday back in the United States.
Siegemund, who beat former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in the second round, is through to the Wimbledon last 16 for the first time.
At 37, she is the oldest player left in the women's tournament, with her best Grand Slam singles run coming when she made the French Open quarter-finals in 2020.
"When you beat a great player like Madison you have to be really happy," said Siegemund. "I managed to keep my nerve in the end. If you don't have nerves in this moment you are probably dead.
"It was a big opportunity. You just take a deep breath and remember your strategy.
"All the girls on the tour are perfectionists. I'm the same but there was no pressure for me. I don't feel like I need to prove anything anymore."

De Minaur targeting upset victory over Djokovic at Wimbledon

Djokovic has won two of the three matches he has previously played against De Minaur. Serbian icon Novak Djokovic will be confident of reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Monday, but he will have to get past Australia's Alex de Minaur in what could be a tight fourth-round battle at the All England Club. Djokovic, the No 6 seed, will turn out as the favourite to progress, based on his impressive record at the annual grass court Grand Slam. Among his 24 Grand Slam titles, seven have been earned at Wimbledon, and though the 38-year-old legend hasn't won the prestigious tournament since 2022, he has reached the final at the last six successive editions. De Minaur hasn't got anything close to the career record boasted by Djokovic, but he too will believe he can book his place in the quarterfinals. The Australian has reached five Grand Slam quarterfinals, including last year's Wimbledon tournament where he handed Djokovic a walkover victory after withdrawing due to a hip injury. Novak Djokovic during his third-round match at Wimbledon last week. Picture:Head-to-head record The two players have met three times in their careers, with Djokovic winning twice, though De Minaur beat his more esteemed opponent in straight sets in last year's United Cup quarterfinals in Perth, which will give him confidence going into Monday's match. As expected, there's not much to gain by backing Djokovic, with Betway offering 1.13 for the Serb to secure victory. There is more cash to be won, however, if De Minaur comes out on top, with 5.00 on offer for the Australian to win. Djokovic and De Minaur are first up on centre court on Monday, with their fourth-round match starting at 2.30pm (SA time). Please note these Betway odds are correct at the time of publishing.

Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart to SV Ried latest revealed

Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart is heading to Europe, with newly promoted Austrian Bundesliga side SV Ried 1912 securing his signature. The midfield maestro will reunite with former Stellenbosch FC winger Antonio van Wyk at the ambitious Austrian outfit. Amakhosi left Maart behind as the squad travelled to the Netherlands for their pre-season camp, following a reported agreement between Chiefs and Ried. Despite the club recently exercising a two-year extension on his contract, the offer from SV Ried proved too good to turn down. SV Ried, also known as SV Guntamatic Ried for sponsorship purposes, earned promotion to Austria's top flight after a successful 2024/2025 campaign in the second tier. Van Wyk played a crucial role in that campaign and now welcomes another South African talent to the fold. The club also boasts South African links in the technical department. Moritz Kossmann, a former coach at Ubuntu Academy and Cape Town City's Diski Challenge team, now serves as Ried's assistant coach and chief analyst. Kossmann moved to Europe in 2024 and has played a pivotal role in integrating South African talent into the Austrian system. SV Ried have already begun their pre-season preparations and are pushing to have Maart available in time for their upcoming friendly. The club hopes to field him in a crucial match against German third-tier outfit Energie Cottbus at the Innviertel Arena on Friday, 18 July. Ried's Bundesliga journey begins with a daunting fixture against RB Salzburg on Saturday, 2 August. The coaching staff view Maart as a key addition to strengthen their midfield ahead of the season. 'I think this change is quite possible. Ried is looking for a strong player for the centre midfield. Will let you know when I have more information but apparently he left the airport just after 6pm yesterday,' said a source close to the deal. Yusuf Maart's move marks another significant step for South African players breaking into European football. With familiar faces around him and a new challenge ahead, all eyes will be on Maart as he looks to make his mark in the Austrian Bundesliga. Will the Kaizer Chiefs star make an impact in Austria? F1 drivers awarded trophies made of Lego at British Grand Prix

The top three finishers in Sunday's British Formula One Grand Prix were rewarded for their efforts with trophies made of Lego toy bricks, a novelty appreciated by some more than others. The trophies are part of a multi-year partnership between Lego and Formula One that has put drivers in a fleet of 10 brick-built cars for a pre-race parade at the Miami Grand Prix, a moment that went viral. "How does it feel after 15 years of F1 to get a podium (trophy) that's made out of Lego that you can pull apart?," McLaren's runner-up Oscar Piastri asked Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg, on the podium for the first time after 239 starts. "It's made out of Lego that you can pull apart and probably buy next week," said the Australian teasingly. "I love Lego. It's good. My daughter can play with it too. You've always got to see the bright side," replied the German. "A bit of silver or gold would have been nice too, but I won't complain." Sunday's race marked 75 years of the championship at the Silverstone circuit where it started in 1950 and the winner's gold-adorned Lego trophy, modelled on the real RAC golden trophy, is made of 2,717 bricks. It weighs more than 2kg and is more than 59cm high and, contrary to Piastri's assertion, cannot be bought as a kit. The second and third-placed trophies were white with red and blue detailing respectively, while the constructors' was dark blue and gold. "We wanted to create something very special because it's the 75th anniversary," said Lego's chief product and marketing officer Julia Goldin. The blocks are stuck together with glue, and took seven builders 210 hours to create in Denmark. New audiences Formula One is reaching out to a new demographic, and particularly a younger audience, with considerable success and has found partners in previously untapped areas. That includes deals with Mattel's Hot Wheels toy cars, a 2026 collaboration with Disney's Mickey & Friends and Lego announced last year. Emily Prazer, Formula One's chief commercial officer, rejected any suggestion of the sport "dumbing down" and said the strategy was to make brands more accessible and reach out to those who may never go to a race. "Lego puts us in nearly every shopping mall in the world," she said. "Disney helps us appeal to the next generation of fans. Hot Wheels and Mattel allow for kids to play with the cars at home." Goldin said Lego also appealed to more adults and had products that were intriguing to people with all kinds of interests. "The same is happening with F1 and there is a real benefit of how the sport is able to engage different people with different interests and different elements of the sport," she said.
