Bengals' flopping 1st-round picks called out in re-draft effort
The Cincinnati Bengals aren't getting much out of their first-round picks of late.
Dax Hill, the first-rounder from 2022, has yet to find a home in the secondary. Myles Murphy, from 2023, has yet to step up as a pass-rusher. Amarius Mims from 2024, at least, showed major promise, but he can only reach the lofty upside if he can remain on the field.
As such, the Bengals often go dramatically new routes in re-draft efforts. The latest example comes from Bleacher Report's Matt Holder, who tabbed Murphy as the team's worst draft pick of the last few years and instead has them taking defensive back Brian Branch:
'Coincidentally, this pick is a replacement for the other 'bust' mentioned above, Hill. The Michigan product was drafted so high because he's a defensive back who has safety and cornerback versatility, which is the role Branch has become a Pro Bowler in with the Lions.'

Hindsight is 20-20, of course. Branch, the 45th pick in 2023, made the Pro Bowl last year after putting up 109 total tackles. He's totaled seven interceptions over two seasons, too, with 29 passes defended.
The Bengals still have big hopes for Hill now that he's playing cornerback. But safety remains a weak point on the roster, as does the pass-rush not named Trey Hendrickson.

Last season, a career-best season yielded 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns while having a completion percentage of 71.4. Yes, the 16 interceptions are a blight, but other than that, Baker has been rolling. Now, looking ahead to the 2025 season, the Buccaneers are considered NFC dark horses, with some thinking that, given the talent at Baker's disposal, a Super Bowl run isn't out of the realm of possibility for this team. It was an anemic offense for the Titans, and Boyd didn't register a touchdown catch for the first time in his career. 'You know, all my family is here. I'd be able to have the majority of them be able to support me. I'm real cool with [coach Mike] Tomlin,' Boyd said. 'He's always been a good person. . . . When I was at Pitt, we had a good relationship. After practice, I'd walk over there, talk to [Antonio Brown] and those guys, talk to Tomlin, and he'd just pick at different things, where I could get better and get some guidance. I think we had a great friendship.' Boyd wasn't just born in the Pittsburgh area, he also attended college at Pitt. While the Steelers could be in the market for a veteran wideout, general manager Omar Khan has been pretty coy about it. There are options out there that might be better than Boyd, but Pittsburgh hasn't flinched yet. After acquiring D.K. Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks and then shipping George Pickens to Dallas via trade, the Steelers don't have a ton of experience in the wideout room. Boyd has 552 career catches to his name for 6,390 yards and 31 touchdowns. That seems like production the Steelers could use heading into 2025. Oliver Gibson, DT who played nine NFL seasons for Bengals and Steelers, dies at 53
Oliver Gibson, who played nine NFL seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers, has died. He was 53 years old. Gibson played defensive tackle, and was a fourth-round pick of the Steelers in the 1995 NFL draft. After four seasons as a backup for Pittsburgh, he signed with the Bengals and started 57 games for Cincinnati from 1999 to 2002. Advertisement He also played in 16 seasons for the Bengals in 2003, his final NFL season and fifth for Cincinnati. Former Bengals defensive tackle Oliver Gibson (99) restrains teammate Reggie Myles against Kansas City Gibson had 12 sacks and one interception over his five seasons for the Bengals. He added 10 passes defended, 37 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and 201 tackles for Cincinnati, according to Pro Football Reference. In 2014, Gibson became the head football coach at his alma mater, Romeoville High School. He also served as assistant basketball coach.
