KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) has assisted 8,466 Indian entrepreneurs through multiple initiatives between January and May this year. These programmes, including Prosperity Empowerment and A New Normal for Indian Women (PENN), Bank Rakyat Indian Entrepreneur Financing-i (BRIEF-i), and the SPUMI Empowerment Financing Scheme (SPUMI Goes Big), aim to enhance economic inclusivity.
KUSKOP Deputy Minister Datuk Seri R Ramanan highlighted the government's dedication to uplifting the Indian community in entrepreneurship. 'This demonstrates that Indian entrepreneurs are integral to Malaysia's economic progress,' he said during a press conference after launching the Vanigham Financing Scheme under SME Bank.
The scheme allocates RM50 million for Indian small businesses, offering loans between RM100,000 and RM300,000 at a subsidised 6% interest rate. Due to high demand, SME Bank expanded funding to RM140 million, redirecting applicants to other suitable programmes.
Today, RM2 million was disbursed to the first 20 beneficiaries. Also present were ministry deputy secretary-general Datuk Saidatu Akhma Hassan and SME Bank chairman Datuk Muslim Hussain.

Kota MADANI Development Gives Civil Servants Greater Housing Access

By Thivyamalini Ramalu PUTRAJAYA, June 27 (Bernama) -- The Kota MADANI initiative in Precinct 19, the development of a smart city that is friendly to the people and the environment, has been welcomed by various levels of society, especially those serving in the federal government's administrative centre. What's more, the initiative has also been appreciated by civil servants from the Indian community who moved from rural areas to Putrajaya and experienced difficulty in obtaining rented housing in a short period of time. Putrajaya Indian Civil Servants Association (IMAIYAM) chairman Dr Sathiskumar K. Muthusamy said most Indian civil servants have stated that they often face problems obtaining housing, at exorbitant costs for house or room rental. "As they are not able to find quarters, they are forced to rent outside at expensive rates. Some also complain that they are often victims of social problems when trying to obtain rented accommodation. "(So) This government move is very timely and we (IMAIYAM) really appreciate it. It is not just providing a place to live but also giving hope to many civil servants to live comfortably and peacefully under one roof in Kota MADANI," he told Bernama when contacted today. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday (June 26) officiated the Kota MADANI development project worth RM4 billion in Precinct 19, which will be developed by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (PjH) through a public-private partnership model based on the concept of build, lease, maintain and transfer (BLMT), without involving government allocations at the initial stage. Kota MADANI will have 10,000 units of high-intensity residential quarters capable of accommodating more than 30,000 residents, vertical schools and various public facilities. Assistant Director of the Research and Program Planning Division of the Community Communication Department K. Yuvarany said the development of the quarters was highly anticipated as she is also facing expensive rent even for one room in Cyberjaya.

Poll: India set for top growth, but weaknesses linger

BENGALURU: The Indian economy will grow at a mostly steady pace this fiscal year and next after marking a four-year low in 2024-25, according to economists polled by Reuters, who have mostly either kept their forecasts unchanged or made marginal upgrades. That stable outlook comes despite the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cutting interest rates by a full percentage point since early this year, including an unexpected 50 basis point reduction on June 6, to boost growth in the face of rising global uncertainties. But the world's fastest-growing major economy still earns that title mostly because government capital expenditure remains strong. Gross domestic product (GDP) was forecast to expand 6.4% in the current fiscal year ending March 2026, the June 17-26 Reuters poll of 51 economists found. That is weaker than 6.5% reported for fiscal year 2024-25, which was the slowest since 2020-21. Growth was forecast to pick up modestly to 6.7% in FY26-27. That marks a slight upgrade from last month's poll, which had medians of 6.3% and 6.5%, respectively. 'Most of the growth that was happening was mainly because of the capital expenditures of the government, which will flatten out,' said Indranil Pan, chief economist at Yes Bank. Private sector spending is still trailing far behind, and analysts generally agree the economy is still failing to create enough quality jobs for its large young population. 'One of the biggest challenges for India at the current juncture is per capita income. Job creation has not been strong enough to generate the income needed to support sustainable economic growth,' Pan added. Some economists said there may be downgrades to the GDP outlook in the coming months if New Delhi fails to secure a trade agreement with Washington before the 90-day pause on tariffs comes to an end on July 9. Trade talks between the two sides have stalled over auto parts, steel and farm goods, Indian officials with direct knowledge told Reuters yesterday, dashing hopes of a deal ahead of US President Donald Trump's deadline to impose reciprocal tariffs. But ANZ economist Dhiraj Nim wrote they have upgraded their FY26 growth forecast on hopes that the two countries would reach a trade deal. 'Even so, growth will remain below potential in a challenging global environment, warranting policy support,' he added. The RBI shifted its policy stance to 'neutral' from 'accommodative' on June 6, signalling a likely end to its shallowest rate-cutting cycle in over a decade. – Reuters

JSW strengthens India paints push with US$1.6 billion Akzo Nobel unit deal

BENGALURU: JSW Paints will buy Dutch paint maker Akzo Nobel's Indian arm for about US$1.6 billion, in what will be the country's biggest deal yet in the sector as competition intensifies between established players and new entrants. The deal comes as challenges for Indian paint makers mount, including volatile raw material costs and heightened competition, with billionaire Kumar Mangalam Birla's entry into the sector last year eating into Asian Paints' market share. Dulux Paint-owner Akzo Nobel had announced a review of its South Asia operations last year to rein in costs and boost its core coatings business. Shares of Akzo Nobel India jumped more than 11 per cent after the deal was announced, and were trading 7.6 per cent higher in Mumbai at around 0830 GMT. India's paint and coatings market is expected to reach US$16.37 billion in size by 2030, Mordor Intelligence estimates, from US$10.46 billion in 2025, driven by a boom in infrastructure and real estate development. The deal, which includes debt, will be the Indian paint sector's biggest deal on record, Dealogic data showed. JSW Paints, launched in 2019 and part of the US$23 billion JSW Group, will buy a 74.76 per cent stake in Akzo Nobel India for US$1.05 billion and launch an open offer for the roughly 25 per cent held by public shareholders. Parent Akzo Nobel, the fourth-largest paint maker in the world by market capitalisation behind PPG, Nippon Paint and Sherwin-Williams, will continue to retain its research and development centre and powder coatings business in India. GROWING COMPETITION Once completed, the deal will propel JSW Paints to fourth place by market share in a sector dominated by Asian Paints , Berger Paints and Kansai Nerolac, according to Geojit Financial Services analyst Antu Thomas. Birla-owned Grasim launched Birla Opus in 2024, crowding the already-competitive market. Birla has since filed an antitrust complaint against Asian Paints for allegedly abusing its market position, Reuters has reported. In 2022, the competition regulator closed a case filed by JSW Paints against Asian Paints for abusing its market position, saying it found no breach of competition laws. "While this acquisition offers JSW Paints a significant scale-up opportunity, near-term integration challenges could provide an opportunity for incumbent players to strengthen their market position in the luxury segment," Amit Purohit, vice president at Elara Capital said. Akzo Nobel is likely to rake in 900 million euros in net proceeds and plans to launch a 400 million euro share buyback program after the deal's closing, which is expected in the fourth quarter of 2025.
