Chelsea given huge fine for breach of financial rules

Reuters20 hours ago
July 4 (Reuters) - Chelsea have been fined 31 million euros ($36.50 million) by UEFA for breaches of its financial rules, while Aston Villa, Barcelona and Olympique Lyonnais were also levied with large fines, UEFA announced on Friday.
The punishments come with the potential for far harsher fines down the road, with Chelsea risking being hit with a further 60 million euros if they do not get their finances in order.
Barcelona must pay a 15 million euro fine, with UEFA fining Lyon 12.5 million and Aston Villa five million.
The teams agreed to settlement agreements which cover periods of two, three or four years, with the clubs' final targets to be fully compliant with the football earnings rule by the end of their specific settlement period.
Additionally, Lyon agreed on an exclusion from the 2025/26 UEFA club competitions should the French authority (DNCG) confirm the club's relegation to Ligue 2.

Tadej Pogacar isn't like Tour legends of old — he can't resist an attack

I spoke with Romain Bardet last week. He's 34 now and, for an 11-times Tour de France rider, he looks fresh. The years cannot take away the boyish expression. We joked that in this Tour de France he can achieve the impossible. Which is to say he can leave Tadej Pogacar for dust in the mountains. The recently retired Bardet will be on a TNT Sports motorbike. He laughs at the thought of finally having his way with Pogacar. The last time I was in the same room as Bardet the venue was a conference room in Copenhagen, two days before the start of the 2022 Tour. He was leader of the DSM team and in answer to the usual question about Pogacar, he said something about not really understanding what was happening in his own sport.

'Let's go and exceed expectations' - fans on Palmeiras win

We asked for your views following Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Palmeiras to reach the semi-finals of the Club World are some of your comments:Mujahid: Target accomplished. Before this tournament, my target for Chelsea was to reach the semi-finals. Let's go and exceed Estevao looks amazing - what a talent he is. He was the heartbeat of Palmeiras. I'm looking forward to watching him play for Chelsea. Overall, a good performance by Chelsea. Bring on Starting to really come together. Liam Delap did well, Pedro Neto was great and Cole Palmer superb but I still wince every time the ball goes back to Robert Sanchez. Get Mike Maignan in and get rid of Raheem Sterling and the rest, even if we have to give them away!Nick: Chelsea looked like they were really starting to purr in the first half. The team and the style of play seems to be coming together. Patience is still required. They're still young, but their mentality seems to be right as when they get pegged back they seem to find a way forward. As for Estevao, he is going to terrorise defenders for years to Starting to see a style of play in this Chelsea team that has been absent for I am still thinking Enzo Maresca is not the right manager to lead Chelsea.
