Rowe/CTV News) Environment Canada says a multi-day heat event for parts of Ontario and Quebec is set to begin on Sunday with a humidex that will make it feel like it's as high as 42 C. The weather agency issued the heat warning on Saturday afternoon, saying people can expect daytime highs ranging between 30 and 34 C. It says overnight low temperatures are expected to range between 19 and 23 C, providing little relief from the heat. The heat wave is expected in all of southern Ontario along Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and across a stretch of Quebec to the Trois-Rivières area. It's yet another heat warning for Ontario this summer, where last month temperature records in many parts of the province were broken during an extreme heat wave. During heat warnings, people are advised to drink water often, watch for signs of heat exhaustion and to check on older adults and those at risk of heat illness. Environment Canada issued a heat warning for eastern Ontario on Saturday, advising of a 'multi-day' heat event starting today. Daytime high temperatures of 30 C to 34 C are expected with humidex values of 38 to 42. Nighttime low temperatures are expected between 19 C and 23 C, providing little relief from the heat. The hottest temperatures are expected on Monday. Conditions are expected to begin improving on Tuesday, though some areas could see heat persist until Wednesday. Environment Canada recommends taking action to protect yourself and others from the conditions, especially those at highest risk of heat illness. The advisory from the weather forecaster says to drink water often, close blinds, plan outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day and to limit direct exposure to the heat. Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. Call 911 if you or someone around you is showing signs of heat stroke. The City of Ottawa provides a list of places for residents who need a place to cool off. Heat warning in effect in Hamilton, surrounding areas could feel like 39
A heat warning has been issued for Hamilton, Niagara, Burlington and surrounding areas from Sunday until Tuesday, according to Environment Canada. Monday is set to be the hottest in Hamilton with a high of 31 C, but it may feel more like 39 with the humidity factored in. "There is some uncertainty in the duration of the heat event for some regions ... Over some areas the heat event could persist into Wednesday," the weather agency said in its heat warning. Tuesday is expected to see a high of 31 C and a low of 20 C. Environment Canada recommends people check on those who are vulnerable, stay hydrated and watch out for symptoms of heat exhaustion. "Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue," said the weather agency. It also suggests people close their blinds and open windows if it feels cooler outside than inside. Using a fan or air conditioner, limiting direct exposure to the sun, and wearing lightweight, light-coloured clothing also advised. The medical officer of health for the City of Hamilton initiated a heat warning starting Sunday. The city and some community agencies will open cooling areas for people to go to during the heat and humidity.
