Renowned overseas chefs to collaborate with Seoul restaurants March 22-26
Top chefs of Asia will be serving up new flavors in Seoul next month.
Fifty Best Signature Sessions, a special dining experience featuring collaborations between top chefs and Seoul restaurants, will run March 22 to 26 at restaurants throughout Seoul as a celebratory event ahead of the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants Awards.
Reservations for Fifty Best Signature Sessions opened on restaurant reservation app Catchtable, Thursday.
For those gravitating toward fusion, try exploring the taste of Macao and Seoul. Chef Tam Kwok Fung of Macanese fine dining restaurant Chef Tam's Seasons will team up with chef Min Kyung-hwan from Born & Bred in Seongdong-gu for dinner priced at 500,000 won ($349) on March 22.
Coming all the way from Chile, chef Rodolfo Guzman, who runs Borago, will team up with local one-star Michelin Evett, headed by Australian chef Joseph Lidgerwood, on March 23, to offer Asian and Latin American flavors. The fusion dinner is priced at 350,000 won.
On the same day, a dinner course priced at 750,000 won will be prepared by the chefs of two Michelin two-star restaurants in Seoul, Mingles and Alla Prima, and chefs from Hong Kong's The Chairman and Bangkok's Sorn at Mingles.
Freshly crowned Asia's Best Female Chef 2025, Chudaree Tam Debhakam will bring her culinary expertise to Seoul, collaborating with chefs Kim Hee-eun and Yoon Dae-hyun of Soul. The three chefs will showcase a Korean and Thai-style lunch menu on March 24, priced at 350,000 won.
Teppan, a teppanyaki restaurant at Grand Hyatt Seoul, will also serve dinner on March 26, but further information has yet to be announced.

Lovebugs are swarming not just the streets, but also social media with digital creators chasing, filming and even snacking on them (yes, really) Amid a frenzy of swarming lovebugs swallowing Seoul, digital creators are cashing in on the chaos with clickbait videos, from insect-eating to dramatic bug hunts. Chambo, an Australian TikToker with nearly 980,000 followers known for his short-form content about Korean culture, recently drew attention after posting a 'mukbang' video, or eating show, filmed on Mount Gyeyang in Incheon, the notorious epicenter of the lovebug invasion. In the video, he eats ramyeon, gimbap and snacks with lovebugs crawling on his face and clinging to his clothes. A Korean YouTuber went even further. He turned the bugs into a meal. In a video posted on his channel "Lee Chung-geun," he created a batter by combining dead lovebugs with flour and eggs and cooked it just like a beef patty for a 'lovebug burger.' Eating the burger with a spicy gochujang-based sauce and beer, he said, 'It's more savory than expected.' This video amassed 550,000 views within two days of being uploaded. Another creator filmed himself catching swarms of flying lovebugs using a giant electric bug racket, sparking a wave of comments from viewers tired of the ongoing infestation. 'Apparently he's doing it for the views and money, but honestly, I'm just thankful he's catching the lovebugs for us. It gave me a bit of relief from the stress,' one comment read. However, not everyone is amused. Some are expressing fatigue over lovebug videos constantly popping up on their social media feed. 'Seeing lovebugs on the streets is tiring enough. Now they're swarming my YouTube feed. Honestly, I hope these clickbait YouTubers vanish in two weeks just like the bugs. It's so annoying how they're trying to cash in on the situation,' one user wrote. Lovebug populations, known for their low survival rates, typically decline sharply around two weeks after a mass emergence. Since June, an outbreak of lovebugs, a species of March fly known for flying in mating pairs, has quickly spread across Seoul and nearby Gyeonggi Province. The capital region has become a hotspot for the summer bugs, as its dense buildings and LED streetlights create the warm, humid conditions they favor. Irritated by the fact that the lovebug outbreak seemed confined to the greater Seoul area, one social media user even claimed to have brought the insects' carcasses to Busan and scattered them in multiple places. What we know about the lovebug outbreak so far After first being spotted in Incheon in 2015, lovebugs saw a major outbreak in 2022 in Seoul's Eunpyeong District and Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The insects have now spread throughout all 25 districts of Seoul. They originated from China's Shandong Province, according to the National Institute of Biological Resources, which conducted DNA tests on lovebug specimens collected from China, Taiwan and Japan. Lovebugs in Korea were found to carry genes that allow them to resist pesticides and adapt to heat stress. Meanwhile, these insects have few natural predators, largely because of their acidic, sour-tasting body fluids and tough exoskeletons, which make them unappealing to common insect-eating animals such as birds or frogs. 'With no natural predators, their population often grows quickly at first, but typically stabilizes over time. But recently, during field research, we've frequently observed birds like magpies and sparrows, as well as spiders and mantises, preying on lovebugs," said Park Seon-jae, a researcher at the NIBR. 'I believe nature's self-regulating mechanisms will eventually kick in, though it will take some time for the population to come under control."

State museum acquires archival materials on architecture, video art pioneer Paik Nam-june The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea announced on Monday its Art Research Center has acquired some 30,000 archival materials in the last year and a half, much of which concerns Korean contemporary architects Woo Kyu-sung and Joh Sung-yong as well as video art pioneer Paik Nam-june. Born in 1941, Korean-born American architect Woo Kyu-sung has explored the cultural dichotomy between Korea and the US in the architectural practice. He has designed landmark buildings in Korea and abroad, such as Ho-Am Museum of Art, Whanki Museum, Olympic Village Apartments in Seoul and Korean Gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Some 100 volumes of Woo's design journals are part of the archival collection obtained by the museum that show the architect's ideas, conceptual sketches, reflections on the design process and consideration for improvements. He had kept design journals since the 1970s when his career started, according to the museum. Around 20,000 archival materials, including the journals, about Woo's practice that feature his design drawings and models were collected, according to the museum. Architect Joh Sung-yong, born in 1944, rose to prominence after winning the design competition for the Asian Games Athletes' Village and Memorial Park in 1983 in Seoul. The museum collected some 1,200 archival items of Cho's practices such as photographs, models, sketches and press clippings, which span his architectural career from 1965 to 2020s. Korean-born video art pioneer Paik Nam-june's archives have strengthened through the new acquisition. Photographer Lee Eun-joo, a pioneering photographer in the art scene, began taking monumental portrait photographs of artists in the 1980s. Her photographs of Paik and 4,000 samples of Paik's archival footage were newly collected this year. The museum also said it acquired 5,900 archival pieces from American artist Mark Patsfall concerning Paik. Some 400 video art projects by Paik were created in collaboration with Patsfall, who closely worked with Paik as a technician and designer from 1984 to 2002. Meanwhile, some 1,200 archival pieces concerning Korean artist Kim Chong-hak, including early drawings, were part of a new acquisition offering insight into the artist's evolving practice. Kim began his career in the early 1960s, creating works that reflected the social conflicts and realities of postwar Korean society. The newly acquired materials have become part of the Art Research Center's archival collection that now consists of some 490,000 materials, according to the museum. The museum stated that it plans to actively make use of these resources through exhibitions, publications, academic programs and original material access services.
