Manager screams at referee 'stop the game' as keeper collapses with head injury
An MLS game between Seattle Sounders and Columbus Crew was called off in the final seconds of stoppage time after goalkeeper Stefan Frei suffered a head injury. The incident occurred as Frei came out to claim a set piece and his head accidentally collided with the knee of an opposition player.
Medical staff immediately tended to the 39-year-old and he had to be taken off the field in an ambulance. And with just seconds left to play, both Seattle manager Brian Schmetzer and Columbus boss Wilfried Nancy agreed the game should be ended with the score 1-1.
Schmetzer could be seen saying "just stop the game" on the sidelines, with Nancy also gesturing towards the referee that he agreed. The official then spoke with both managers and blew the final whistle.
Schmetzer later thanked Nancy for agreeing to stop the match and said Frei was "fine". Schmetzer said: "Stefan is being evaluated for a head and neck injury. He got hit pretty hard. We're in the early stages of that evaluation.
"As soon as we get a definitive, a real, good clarity on the extent of the injury, we'll give you more. I don't want to speculate. He is going to the hospital, but he is fine.
"He was alert when he was loaded onto the ambulance … I'm very happy for our medical staff because they did a good job to be careful. We can't underestimate that type of stuff.
"I appreciate what he [Nancy] did, because the ref wasn't going to stop the game, and everybody knew the game should have been stopped. So good on him. So thank you, Wilfried."
Seattle midfielder Cristian Roldan added: "We know Stef, he's resilient. He's going to fight his way back, and having gone through concussions [myself] before, you know he's going to get all the support he needs, and he's going to be better in no time.
"But you know the most important thing after an injury like this is to give him space and be patient and listen to his body, his brain, his symptoms, and in the end, he's going to be just fine."
Frei later shared an update on social media, thanking fans for their support. "Still trying to figure out what happened at the end of the game, but I'm incredibly grateful to all the staff that looked after me and happy to be back home resting now," he wrote.
"What resonates is all the messages, calls, and love I've received from so many of you. Thank you — truly.... It means more than I can put into words. I feel the support, and I'm thankful for every single one of you."

Jannik Sinner involved in 'bizarre' moment with Grigor Dimitrov seconds before devastating Wimbledon retirement
Sinner listened into a conversation between Dimitrov and his trainer before his rival was forced into a devastating retirement Grigor Dimitrov was left in tears as he had to retire despite being two sets up against Jannik Sinner – but the Italian made sure to show his support for his devastated rival. World No.1 Sinner was in serious trouble against the veteran Bulgarian who had taken the opening two sets before a break in play during their Wimbledon last 16 clash to put the roof over centre court. The third set had barely started though when Dimitrov suddenly hunched over clutching his pectoral muscle. He was in tears as his medical staff assessed him and, as concerns rose, Sinner left his chair to see how his rival was doing. That was a slightly unusual sight and Tim Henman said on commentary: "It's slightly bizarre for Sinner to be listening in to the conversation." It was a touch of class from the big Italian and showed how much he cared about his rival, who attempted to play on but retired after just one point. That ended his chances of a massive upset for which he was firm favourite with the first two sets on the board. A shaken Sinner spoke to the BBC after the match and said it didn't feel like a win. He said: "I don't know what to say. He is an incredible player, we all saw this today. He's been so unlucky in the past couple of years. An incredible player, a good friend of mine. Seeing him in this position, he would deserve to play in the next round. "I hope he has a speedy recovery. Very unlucky from his side, I don't take this as a win at all, this is a very unfortunate moment for us to witness. Seeing him again with this kind of injury is very very tough. "We saw with his reaction how much he cares about the sport. Thank you for coming, but this is not the end we wanted to see. We wish him all the best." MLS goalkeeper breaks his silence after scary moment he needed an ambulance to take him off the field
Seattle Sounders goalie Stefan Frei said he is 'back home resting' after he was rushed off the field in an ambulance on Sunday. Seattle and the Columbus Crew were deep into second half stoppage time when the knee of Crew midfielder Amar Sejdic collided with Frei's head as they both went for the ball during a free kick. Frei immediately went to the ground and reportedly received about five minutes of medical attention before an ambulance drove onto Lumen Field. He was then placed on a stretcher en route to the hospital, while both Seattle coach Brian Schmetzer and Columbus coach Wilfried Nancy agreed to end the match early. Following the game, Frei spoke out for the first time since the harrowing incident. 'Still trying to figure out what happened at the end of the game,' he began on X. Ambulance enters field to attend to Stefan Frei who was kneed in the head during corner kick. The game has been call. Scary scenes and concerns for Frei. @CascadiasportsN @SoundersFC — MazvitaMaraire (@MazvitaMaraire) July 6, 2025 'But I'm incredibly grateful to all the staff that looked after me and happy to be back home resting now. What resonates is all the messages, calls, and love I've received from so many of you. He continued in a reply message: 'Thank you - truly.... It means more than I can put into words. I feel the support, and I'm thankful for every single one of you.' While the extent of Frei's injury is not year clear, Schmetzer said following the game that Frei was 'alert' as he went onto the ambulance. 'His fingers were moving, so he was OK in that regard,' he told reporters, via the Seattle Times. 'No paralysis, no nothing major, but I don't want to downplay it. I'm very happy for our medical staff because they did a good job to be careful. We can't underestimate that type of stuff.' Footage from the Apple TV broadcast of the 1-1 draw showed both Schmetzer and Nancy pleading with referees to end the game as the Crew were set to have a corner kick. Nancy said that 'football is not important' in comparison to Frei's injury, while one of the goalie's teammates thanked the coach for his actions. 'I have a lot of respect for them doing that, you can tell they're a classy club,' Sounders forward Paul Rothrock said. 'I talked to Wilfried afterward and said thank you for doing that. The referees were trying to say it was a corner kick, but I don't think anybody could've played after that.' It's unclear if Frei will be available for the Sounders' match against Sporting KC on Saturday.

Man Utd set cut-price Tyrell Malacia transfer fee for Celtic as Ruben Amorim exchange sparks desperate PSR plan
The defender was on a January shortlist of Hoops' targets and is now available for a bargain price Celtic have been told the bargain price Manchester United would accept for out of favour full back Tyrell Malacia. The Scottish Premiership champions has been on the hunt for left-back Malacia in the winter window after failing to get bring Kieran Tierney in early from Arsenal despite having a pre-contract agreement in place. And after Greg Taylor's departure for PAOK it's a similar story for Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers as he looks for a left-back with towering Dutch defender Justin de Haas reportedly on agenda with Famalicao holding a £3million valuation. But Malacia now appears to be available for a similar fee after PSV Eindhoven - who the Dutch international joined over the Hoops - failed to trigger an option to buy in the 25-year-old's deal. before reporting for pre-season training to allow the defender to search for a new club. Malacia signed from Feyenoord for around £13million four years ago but has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford. The Manchester Evening News has revealed that signed a four-year contract at Old Trafford back in 2022, United need to sell him for £3.22million to avoid a loss under the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) with the club willing to accept a lowball bid as they are "unlikely to inundated with offers." There appears to be little way back for Malacia at the Red Devils following a public back and forth with boss Ruben Amorim. In January - shortly before his exit for the Eredvisie -Amorim admitted he didn't believe the full-back could fit into his system. He said: "A player like him is a full-back. He played with the national team outside and inside, but sometimes in this system, sometimes it's hard for him because he's not so offensive. "He can play as one of the three defenders, if we have more possession and more control of the games. It's a really difficult context for him." And just days later after returning to the Netherlands - where he came through the youth ranks at Feyenoord - Malacia took a cheeky dig back declaring he was "finally playing good football again."
