Sabah legalises 40 villages, reallocates forest land with minimal impact

By: Sherell Jeffrey Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Assembly has approved the removal of 16,729 hectares from 10 forest reserves to legalise 40 villages in seven districts, benefiting over 12,000 residents. Assistant Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said these villages, some existing since 1985, deserve legal recognition and land security. Most of the land (15,978 hectares) comes from the Sipitang area, aiding 36 villages in Sipitang, Tenom, and Kemabong. Smaller areas in Pitas, Ranau, Kalabakan, Tawau, and Sebatik will also gain village status, with some land used for border security and public facilities. Despite the reductions, Sabah's total forest area drops only 0.47pc, from 3.575 million to 3.558 million hectares. The government will replace the removed land with areas of equal size and quality, aiming to meet its goal of protecting 30pc of Sabah's land under the 2018 Forest Policy. N.Korea's Kim to Lavrov: Russia will 'surely win' in Ukraine
SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un offered Moscow his full support on the war in Ukraine during talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Pyongyang, the North's state media said early Sunday. Lavrov's visit was the latest in a series of high-profile trips by top Moscow officials as both countries deepen military and political ties amid Russia's offensive against Kyiv. Pyongyang sent thousands of troops to Russia's Kursk region to oust Ukrainian forces and provided the Russian army with artillery shells and missiles. Kim and Lavrov met on Saturday in "an atmosphere full of warm comradely trust," the official KCNA news agency reported. Russia's foreign ministry posted a video on Telegram of the two men shaking hands and greeting each other with a hug. Kim told Lavrov that North Korea was "ready to unconditionally support and encourage all the measures taken by the Russian leadership as regards the tackling of the root cause of the Ukrainian crisis", KCNA said. The North Korean leader also expressed a "firm belief that the Russian army and people would surely win victory in accomplishing the sacred cause of defending the dignity and basic interests of the country." The two men otherwise discussed "important matters for faithfully implementing the agreements made at the historic DPRK-Russia summit talks in June 2024", KCNA said. The two heavily sanctioned nations signed a military deal last year, including a mutual defence clause, during a rare visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to North Korea. Lavrov told Kim that Putin "hopes for continued direct contacts in the very near future", according to the Russian state agency TASS. Russian and North Korean state media have said Lavrov would stay until Sunday. Earlier Saturday, Lavrov met with his counterpart Choe Son Hui and thanked the "heroic" North Korean soldiers who have been deployed to aid Russia, TASS said. Both sides "emphasised their determination to jointly counter the hegemonic aspirations of extra-regional players, which are leading to escalating tensions in Northeast Asia and throughout the Asia-Pacific region", Russia's foreign ministry said. Lavrov met with his counterpart in Wonsan, a city on the country's east coast where a massive resort was opened earlier this month. Ahead of the visit, Russia announced that it would begin twice-a-week flights between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Hajiji to consult GRS partners first on dissolving state assembly
GRS chairman Hajiji Noor, who is chief minister, said he would discuss and inform the GRS party presidents when the time comes to dissolve the assembly. PETALING JAYA : Any decision to seek dissolution of the Sabah state assembly, which would trigger fresh elections, will be made only with the consensus of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah partners, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said today. Hajiji, who is chief minister, said that while he holds the prerogative to advise the governor, Musa Aman, to dissolve the assembly, he prefers that the decision be made collectively, in line with a GRS commitment to joint decision-making. 'We are in GRS, and any decision must go through the Supreme Council,' Bernama quoted him as saying. 'I will discuss and inform the party presidents when the time comes to dissolve the assembly,' he told reporters in Penampang, Sabah, after closing a joint convention of Parti Bersatu Sabah and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku. However, he did not indicate when the discussion with the Supreme Council would be held. When asked whether he would allow the assembly to dissolve automatically this November, Hajiji said the matter would be considered carefully. The current state assembly's term expires on Nov 11, if not dissolved earlier. Election must be held within 60 days of dissolution. Commenting on speculation that GRS may contest the election independently, Hajiji said the matter would also be discussed at the Supreme Council level. The party has been in discussions with Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional about electoral cooperation, after stating that it could contest the election on its own should PH and BN form an alliance. Earlier today, the opposition Perikatan Nasional ruled out electoral alliance with GRS. GRS comprises Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, PBS, STAR, Parti Maju Sabah, United Sabah National Organisation , Liberal Democratic Party, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah and Parti Cinta Sabah. Hajiji described today's PBS-STAR convention as a historic milestone that strengthened local political cooperation. It reflected political maturity, prioritising the interests of the people and the state over political differences, he said.

Police probe fake TikTok account impersonating Saifuddin offering aid
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched an investigation into a TikTok account impersonating Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Federal Criminal Investigation Department acting director Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that a report had been received against the TikTok account @saifuddin_nasution1, which is suspected to be fake and to have used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to offer financial assistance for certain purposes. "The case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," he said in a statement today. Fadil also reminded the public to be cautious and not to trust any offers of financial assistance via social media too readily. He advised members of the public to always verify the authenticity of such information before taking any action. "The police also issue a stern warning that action will be taken against any party found to be involved in violating the law," he added. Earlier today, the Home Ministry's office alerted the public to the existence of several fake TikTok accounts impersonating Saifuddin. In a statement, the ministry said the fake accounts claimed that Saifuddin was offering financial assistance through a WhatsApp link shared in the biography section of the respective TikTok pages.
