Hot and sunny weather expected in Calgary for the rest of May

CTV News27-05-2025

The rest of May is going to feel more like July as we kick off a stretch of sunshine and temperatures in the mid to high 20's for the rest of the month.
In fact, by Thursday, Calgary could experience its first 30 C high of the year!
A ridge of high pressure is starting to move in and will really pump in a lot of warm air on Wednesday, with winds out of the south at 20 – 40 km/h.
By Thursday, two significant factors could set the stage for our next possible thunderstorm event.
Calgary weather Tuesday, May 27, 2025 - 2
The first is all the sunshine that's warmed up our ground over the last few days, causing air to rise and creating low pressure at the surface.
The second is an expected shift in our jet stream, which will cause the high-pressure ridge to move east.
These two events working in tandem have the potential to create enough instability for thunderstorms to develop in southern Alberta on Thursday evening.
Models so far suggest areas in southeast Alberta are the most likely to get storm development, but Calgary could see some action as well.
It will be short lived though, as another mini ridge of high pressure starts to move back in on Friday, which will stabilize the atmosphere once again.
When it comes to wet weather, some of the long-range models are in agreement that the start of June will be cool and rainy which will be a nice reprieve after this stretch of heat.

For those planning to be outside over the next couple of days, keep in mind the UV Index is at an eight for Tuesday, which is very high.
Sun burn can happen very quickly to unprotected skin. Make sure to have the sunscreen handy, along with a hat, sunglasses and plenty of water!

Toronto Fire says no injuries were reported after a house went up in flames on June 30, 2025. No injuries were reported after a house in Etobicoke went up in flames early Monday morning. Firefighters were called to the home on Martin Grove Road, south of Rathburn Road, at 3:10 a.m. When crews arrived, they found the two-storey home was fully engulfed. The property was unoccupied at the time. Toronto Fire said the fire was extinguished and no injuries have been reported. Nearby homes were evacuated. TTC busses were deployed to the area to shelter displaced residents. A preliminary investigation has found that the home was being renovated, according to Toronto Fire, which added it's highly possible the second floor has collapsed due to the ongoing construction. Heat warning continues with WECHU offering guidance

As the extreme heat continues to grip the region, Windsor's top doctor is urging residents to take care of themselves. Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Mehdi Aloosh said it's important to drink water and keep hydrated and stay in shaded areas. 'If they don't have air conditioning in their house, people can go into malls, community centres, libraries, to keep themselves safe from the hot weather,' said Dr. Aloosh. He said to watch for signs of heat stroke in yourself and others. 'Thirst, lightheadedness, it starts with cramping, and then some of the fogginess in thinking,' said Dr. Aloosh. Dr. Aloosh said it's important to regularly apply sunscreen when outside. 'The generally recommendation is that when you are out, and even if you are not under the sun, you need to use that even if it's a cloudy day,' he said. Environment Canada has issued a heat warning. The weather service said showers and thunderstorms are expected to move through on Monday, ending the extreme heat and humidity by Monday evening. - Written by Dustin Coffman and Meagan Delaurier/AM800 News.
