'Local legend' Glasgow road sweeper retires after 43 years

Glasgow Times22-06-2025

Allan Richardson, 60, started working for Glasgow City Council in 1982 and has retired after 43 years of service.
For the past 30 years, Allan, who lives in Kelvinhall, has kept Byres Road and its surrounding areas clean as a road sweeper, but saw his job as much more than that.
A well-loved member of the community, he also spent his lunch breaks sketching the area and has delved deeper into the hobby since retiring.
But his love for art started in school before he began his council career.

Allan explained: " I started in 1982, and I was doing a higher art at the time, my dad worked in the cleansing department, he had a word with someone and told me, 'You've got an interview for Friday.'
"He said, 'Well, you know you can always do the art later on'.
"You know, it was the 80s, and during that time, there weren't many jobs and everything was really uncertain."
Allan, originally from Drumchapel, started on Monday after a straightforward interview, during which he agreed that he didn't mind it being a 'messy' job.
He spent two days as a binman but said, "That wasn't for me. I wasn't built for that. It was all the bigger-built guys who did the bins back then."

Allan moved into sweeping and around from depot to depot, settling with his patch being Byres Road, where he kept the streets spick and span for over 30 years.
He saw a lot of change in the area in that time, and generations of families grew up. He said, "A lot of the residents, you would see them going to school with their kids, and then all of a sudden, you'd see them going to secondary and then into university.
"And they come back and they go, oh, you're still here - you're still pushing that cart."
He worked through decades of events in the area, remaining a stalwart through the Covid lockdowns and enjoying events like the UCI Cycling World Championships.
We asked Allan what his highlight of his decades in the job was, to which he replied, "the people."
He explained: "Somebody would come up to me in the morning and say and have a chat, and it'd make my day just to have a five-minute chat and ask what you're doing.
"And they would be happy about it as well, you feel as if you're included, you feel as if you've got a presence."
His presence was definitely felt by the community, who organised a party for his retirement, and one even wrote a poem about him.

Resident Carol Martin shared her admiration for Allan, she said: "Rain, hail or shine, he was there. He inspired people, uplifted their spirits, and it was so nice to always see him and know he was there.
"He's such a good soul, he gave people 'street therapy' with his chats."
The landscape of Byres Road has also changed, and Allan enjoyed spending his lunch breaks sketching the area.
He said: "At school, I wasn't any good because I didn't know that until later on when I found out that I was dyslexic.
"I can't construct a letter; you know, things that I find quite difficult, but if you say, 'Go and sketch something,' I'll sketch it.
"I enjoy my sketching, and I just think it's a release. When I'm sketching, I'm kind of carried away."

When hearing Allan's story, you can't help but think of the Deacon Blue hit Dignity - he's a worker for the council, has been 43 years.
And his art is like his ship, his Dignity, letting him retire into the thing he loves.
Allan revealed his favourite street on his patch too, he said: "I like Athole Gardens, I like the buildings and the church, Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church. I think that's quite a nice area there."

Victoria Dunnett is the former Chair of the Boghall Drop-In Centre A mum-of-four from Bathgate is 'incredibly humbled' after it was revealed she's being awarded an MBE in King Charles's Birthday Honours list in recognition of her service to the people of West Lothian. Victoria Dunnett is the former Chair of the Boghall Drop-In Centre, a grassroots charity dedicated to supporting individuals and families across the local authority area. ‌ The Boghall Drop-In Centre has become a cornerstone of the local community, particularly during the festive period. Its Christmas programme includes free meals, Santa's Grotto experiences, pensioners' parties, and other inclusive events aimed at bringing joy and support to those who need it most. ‌ The charity's services are designed to be free wherever possible, ensuring that no one is left behind. It reflects the commitment of an amazing small team that continues to provide vital support through the Boghall Drop-In Centre. ‌ 'I'm also deeply grateful to Persimmon Homes East Scotland, whose generous support and ongoing charitable donations — contributed by employees and backed wholeheartedly by senior management — have enabled us to assist families for up to six months at a time. 'I'm proud to be part of such a compassionate organisation, and proud to stand alongside the incredible and resilient people of Boghall and West Lothian.'

Clydebank parents fury as schools lose crossing patrollers

Following the council budget for 25/26, the decision was made to remove almost half of the lollipop people in West Dunbartonshire as they faced closing a £7.7million budget gap. The Glasgow Times visited parents at Our Lady of Loretto in Dalmuir, where their two patrollers on the junction of Dumbarton Road and Mountblow Road will not return to their posts in August. One parent, Megan Sawyers, told of her concern as the busy carriageway commonly sees large buses and lorries driving down the road daily. She said: "It's just insane that they [council] think that's acceptable, and the minimal amount of saving they must make from however many positions it is. "There are always accidents here. Last week, there was there were two cars that hit a fence." Parents and carers received confirmation last week of which schools are to be affected by the removal of the patrollers. West Dunbartonshire Council's Roads service, along with a specialist consultant, says they undertook a review of all 30 locations against the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents recommendations and School Crossing Patrol Service Guidelines. Megan also raised concerns over the traffic lights at the box junction. Traffic heading north on Mountblow Road doesn't have a filter lane at their traffic lights, which results in many of them running a red light, according to Megan. She added: "You get the buses going through it, you get trucks going through it. They wouldn't even be able to see a kid trying to cross behind them or in front of them. "Since they changed the intersection last summer holidays, the timing on the lights never seems to have been correct to get the traffic through safely." West Dunbartonshire Council, however, said they have no statutory obligation to provide school crossing patrollers and have received no complaints regarding the lights at the junction. However, it is understood they are set to carry out an inspection at the site. Barbara O'Hanlon (Image: Newsquest) Barbara O'Hanlon, who was at the school picking up her grandkids, called the news 'ridiculous.' She said: 'They definitely need [patrollers] for the kids because that's a busy road. That's scandalous. 'The kids definitely need it, and so do the adults as well. 'The lollipop ladies have been there for 40 years; she was there when we were taking our kids to school.' Maryanne Scott, who also has children at the school, warns that there could be fatal consequences to the cutting of patrollers. She said: "It's going to cost a life in the long run, so as much as they're saving funding, they will lose someone. "It's not practical at all; it's a major safety issue. You can give someone back their job, you can't give a kid back their life." (Image: Newsquest) Nicole McKenna, who was waiting on her two children, said: "That's a really, really busy road, and kids will get hurt. The road is mobbed. 'There are crashes at the bottom of Mountblow Road. "It's sad because the kids have grown up with the lollipop ladies; they look forward to going up and saying hi to them.' A West Dunbartonshire Council spokesperson said: 'Despite a budget gap of £7.7million for 2025/26, with similar financial challenges forecast in future years, an option to remove all crossing patrollers was rejected and we are continuing to provide the service at 17 locations across the authority. 'Sites where crossing patrollers are retained were identified by an independent assessment, which considered each location's traffic and pedestrian volumes. 'We have not received any complaints about the traffic lights at Mountblow Road, but the site will be inspected to ensure they are operating correctly. Drivers who do not adhere to the sequence of traffic lights should be reported to Police Scotland. 'The safety of our school pupils remains our priority, and work continues to ensure safe routes to schools.'

Kisimul Castle at Castlebay on Barra, in the Outer Hebrides, is a 15th century castle that was once the clan Macneil stronghold. Now, five years since its closure to the public, 'essential' conservation work on the great hall has begun. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It is estimated the works will take approximately three weeks to complete. These works, which include a secondary structure being installed beneath the existing concrete, are hoped to address concerns with the concrete and its internal reinforcement bars. Historic Environment Scotland (HES) say this will help them to safely carry out further necessary works to the interior of the castle. Last year, high-level masonry inspections and exterior works took place to address concerns related to the castle's concrete and reinforcement bars. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad These concerns are also related to the previous major 20th century restoration as well as the impacts of salt and moisture from the castle's coastal location. In March this year, HES also carried out repairs to the slipway which will help to facilitate access for visitors once the castle has reopened. The recent works follow an intricate operation to temporarily relocate historic objects from the hall to ensure their protection while the works are underway. The artefacts, which are owned by The Macneil of Barra, include six muskets, two halberds and an impressive armorial. The muskets and halberds are stamped with dates from 1742 and 1743, dating them back to the time of the Jacobite Risings. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad James MacPherson, District Architect at HES, said: 'We are delighted to be progressing works to the interior of the castle which is a key milestone in our programme of conservation work and is another step forward in our long-term plans to reopen Kisimul Castle to visitors. 'We appreciate that the communities of Barra and Vatersay are keen to showcase Kisimul Castle to visitors who arrive from all over the world, and we will continue to work closely with the local community.
