Dr Kakkilaya was speaking during the commemoration event of the first general secretary of the CPI,
SV Ghate
, on Thursday. It was organised by the South Canara and Udupi District Committee of the
, held on May 1—International Workers' Day.
While speaking, he mentioned that Ghate, a distinguished son of Mangaluru, went to Mumbai not to engage in trade like others, but to observe the conditions of the workers there and work towards their liberation from servitude.
He deeply studied Marxist and Leninist communist ideologies, recognising them as the sole path to human emancipation. He brought together communist thinkers to form the CPI in 1925 and became its first general secretary. Actively participating in the freedom struggle and the fights of workers and the poor, he was imprisoned multiple times. His efforts led to the spread of the labour and communist movements across the country, making the CPI a major opposition party in the years following Independence.
To counter the current right-wing dominance in the country, we must strengthen the CPI party with more effort than ever before.
Later, Ghate's relative, Sumana Ghate, said, "Grandfather Ghate was very affectionate with the family. Everyone had love and trust for him. We are proud to say that he is part of our family."
Another guest, retired principal and public thinker Dr Vasanth Kumar, said that the youth are the future of the country, but they are being led astray in the name of religion, caste, and nationalism.
"If we succeed in guiding them back on track, the country's future will be bright. Otherwise, disaster is certain. We must act in this direction," he added.

CPI (Maoist) acknowledge losing 357 cadres in encounters with security forces, says Bastar IG
: The banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) has acknowledged in a recent letter released by its central committee that it has lost 357 members in various encounters with security forces across the country over the past year, said Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) P. Sundarraj on Wednesday (July 16, 2025). Mr. Sundarraj said the admission highlighted 'the severe setbacks suffered by the outfit, especially in core conflict zones'. Stating that these numbers were disclosed in a 24-page booklet released by the CPI (Maoist), Mr. Sundarraj said this list of Maoist casualties included four Central Committee (CC) members and 15 State Committee-level members, pointing to the loss of senior leadership and operational command within the outfit. Looming deadline With Union Home Minister Amit Shah setting a deadline of March 31, 2026 for the elimination of Maoism from the country, the forces are carrying out continuous anti-Naxal operations in Bastar. Recent successes in Chhattisgarh include the killing of general secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju (70) who was neutralised by security forces in Narayanpur on May 21 and in a departure from the previous years, operations are continuing in monsoon this year. 'Significantly, the Dandakaranya region, which spans parts of Bastar Range districts and Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, has been identified as the area of maximum damage, with 281 Maoists neutralised in the past one year alone,' the IG said. Out of the 357 deceased, 136 were women cadres. 'As per the vision of the Government of India and the Government of Chhattisgarh, the security forces are adopting a pro-people and development-centric approach. This strategy, complemented by intelligence-based operations, has led to remarkable operational successes in recent times and is helping create a conducive environment for lasting peace in the region,' Mr. Sundarraj said.

Gadchiroli's Maraknar gets its first-ever bus service since Independence
Residents of Maraknar—in Gadchiroli district on the foothills of Abujmarh which had no access to public transport until now— got a reason to rejoice as an MSRTC bus made inroads into this remote village on Wednesday, the first time since Independence. Until last year, residents had to walk five to six hours through dense forests to reach Kothi, the nearest village with bus connectivity. Although a road upto Markanar was built last year, bus services began only on Wednesday. Over 1,200 people, including students, patients, and farmers, are expected to benefit from the bus service. According to Gadchiroli police, the new bus route from Markanar to Aheri will also benefit nearby villages such as Murumbhushi, Phulanar, Koparshi, Poyarkothi, and Gundurwahi, which for long did not have access to public transport. The initiative was made possible through the concerted efforts of Gadchiroli Police and the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). Gram Patil of Maraknar Jhuru Malu Mattami inaugurated the bus while CRPF Assistant Commandant Avinash Chaudhary and police sub-inspector Dilip Gawali of Kothi police station formally flagged it off. The moment was celebrated with the distribution of sweets by the police. Located just 6km from the Chhattisgarh border in the Bhamragad sub-division, Maraknar is one of several villages now benefiting from recent development under police protection. Roads like the one from Kothi to Maraknar were completed last year, and the ongoing Maraknar to Murumbhushi road has opened up long-isolated areas in the region. A mobile tower was also installed in Maraknar recently, improving communication in the village. On February 9 this year, villagers unanimously passed a resolution refusing to support Maoists in any way. Subsequently development work was expedited under the civic action programmes by the Gadchiroli Police Force. In recent years, the Gadchiroli Police Force has facilitated the construction of over 420km of roads and 60 bridges, despite security threats. Earlier this year, similar services were launched from Gatta-Gardewada-Wangeturi and from Katezari to Gadchiroli, also aimed at easing life in some of the most difficult terrains. This initiative was the result of efforts led by PSI Dilip Gawali, CRPF personnel and Kothi police in Gadchiroli. The initiative was guided and supported by senior officials of Gadchiroli, including Superintendent of Police (SP) Neelotpal, Additional SPs M Ramesh, Satya Sai Karthik, Gokul Raj G, and DySP Vishal Nagargoje, along with SDPO Bhamragad Amar Mohite.
