'Messi Might Come To Al-Ahly': Mahrez Waiting For ARG Star To Step Foot In Saudi

News184 days ago
Al-Ahly winger Riyad Mahrez dreams of playing alongside Lionel Messi in the Saudi Pro League, envisioning the latter as a playmaker.
Al-Ahly winger Riyad Mahrez has said that it would be a dream for the team to play alongside Lionel Messi, if he arrives in the Saudi Pro League, and he would like to imagine him as the playmaker with himself on the wing. There has been a murmur around Messi moving to Saudi Arabia over the past few weeks.
Cristiano Ronaldo helped transform the Saudi Pro League after joining Al Nassr as a free agent in January 2023. He believes that the tournament is amongst the world's top five leagues and is a superior product to Ligue 1 and Major League Soccer.
'Saudi League is better than Ligue 1, of course. Try to sprint in 38, 39, 40-degree weather and see. France only has PSG. The rest are finished," Ronaldo had said in December.
'No. I think the five big European leagues are ahead and then we can start to compete with the other leagues. We're not too far off, I think. After that, the goal isn't to be the best league in the world right now," Mahrez said earlier this month when asked about Ronaldo's statement.
'Those like me who have arrived are here at the beginning of this adventure; we're a bit like pioneers. We're helping them make this league stronger. And frankly, over my two seasons, I've felt progress in the teams, the coaches, the tactics and the organisation," Mahrez added.
After disagreeing with Ronaldo, the Al-Ahly winger was interviewed by CARRE, where he said that he and Messi would make a great duo.
'We heard from the newspapers that Messi might come to Al-Ahly. It would be a dream for us to play together… I imagine him as a playmaker and me on the wing. We would make a great duo," Mahrez said.
'There is no special protection for dribbling players. Maybe Messi would receive special treatment if he decided to come, but not me. I received a lot of beatings," Mahrez added.
Messi's contract with Inter Miami is up in late 2025 and Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahly are 'ready to do whatever it takes' to convince Messi to sign with them, according to reports.

Debutants 1 Ladakh FC hold Tribhuvan Army to 1-1 draw

Jamshedpur, Aug 2 (PTI) Debutants Ladakh FC made a dream start to their Durand Cup campaign holding Tribhuvan Army FC to a hard-fought 1–1 draw in a Group C match of the Durand Cup here on Saturday. Defender Siju headed in the opener in the 23rd minute to script history as the first-ever Ladakhi player to score in the iconic tournament, before Tribhuvan Army's Nirajan Dhami equalised with a calm finish just before the break. Tribhuvan Army from Nepal, dominant in possession during the opening exchanges, struggled to create clear-cut chances until the final 20 minutes. But in the 23rd minute, defender Siju powered a precise header from a corner to give the youthful side a shock advantage. However, Tribhuvan Army grew into the game and, in the 40th minute, Nirajan Dhami delivered a composed finish, tapping in a through ball following a swift counterattack to level the score and execute a trademark 'Siu' celebration.. Two minutes of added time followed, and the half ended at 1‑1. The second half began with Tribhuvan pushing forward with urgency, dominating possession and setting the tempo.. Their midfield began to dictate the play, creating multiple half-chances through both flanks. Despite the pressure, 1 Ladakh FC's defence remained resolute, anchored by a disciplined backline and sharp goalkeeping. As the half wore on, fatigue set in, with several players from both sides requiring treatment and hydration breaks. While the Nepal side came close on a couple of occasions, most notably with a curling effort that narrowly missed the post they failed to convert their chances.. Ladakh showed grit and heart, ensuring the game ended in a well-earned 1–1 draw. Ligue 1 transfer news: Marseille signs Brazilian winger Paixao to boost attack

Ligue 1 club Marseille has bolstered its attack by signing Brazilian winger Igor Paixao from Feyenoord in a deal that could rise to €35 million ($40.6 million). The 25-year-old Paixao scored 18 goals in 47 games last season and was voted the Dutch player of the season. Marseille beat competition from newly promoted Premier League team Leeds United to sign him. Marseille announced the deal late Friday without giving further details, but French media reports valued the deal at €30 million with an additional five million in performance-related bonuses. Marseille paid a club-record €32 million to Portuguese club Braga to sign forward Vitinha in early 2023. Vitinha failed to settle and scored only six goals in 43 games before being sold to Genoa. Paixao showed his full repertoire of skills during a Champions League game against AC Milan in February, scoring in a 1-0 win and giving the Milan defense a torrid time all game with his quickness. Igor Paixão: big game player. 😮‍💨 — Feyenoord Rotterdam (@Feyenoord) August 1, 2025 Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 last season behind Paris Saint-Germain and qualified directly for the Champions League. Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has made several moves in the transfer market this summer, including bringing back veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League. The 36-year-old Aubameyang scored 21 goals for Al-Qadsiah last season, after having spent the 2023-24 campaign at Marseille — where he netted 30 goals overall and became a fan favorite in the southern port city. Attacking midfielder Angel Gomes joined from Lille and gritty central defender Facundo Medina arrived from Lens. The arrivals of Aubameyang and Paixão bring extra firepower to an attack that already features Mason Greenwood — who scored 21 league goals last season and Amine Gouiri. Marseille opens the new Ligue 1 season when it travels all the way up the country to face Brittany-based Rennes on Aug. 15.

In the fifth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England, Shubman Gill had a chance to break Sunil Gavaskar's record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India, but he failed to achieve the objective. The 25-year-old right-handed batter needed 53 runs in the Oval Test to break Gavaskar's record of 774 runs, but he could only manage to score 32 (21 in the first innings and 11 in the second innings). He finished the five-match series with a total of 754 runs for India in 10 innings. In his first-ever Test series for India against the West Indies in 1971, Gavaskar played four matches and amassed a total of 774 runs. However, during his 11-run knock in the second innings on Saturday (August 2), Gill broke Graham Gooch's record of scoring the most runs in a Test series played between India and England.
