Bridal shop ordered to refund RM2,850 to customer

By: Crystal E Hermenegildus Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: The Consumer Claims Tribunal has ordered a bridal shop to refund RM2,850 to a customer after ruling that the service provider failed to perform any part of its contractual obligations. Tribunal President Salmi Zalinah Abdul Rahim issued the decision following a hearing involving the claimant, Nicole Ooi Wei Shan, and the respondent, Delove Bridal Selection East Malaysia. According to the case facts, on December 31, 2023, the claimant entered into a contract with the respondent for a pre-wedding photography package and paid a deposit of RM3,000. The package was stated to be valid for three years. However, on May 5, 2025, the claimant informed the respondent via WhatsApp that due to personal issues, she and her partner would no longer be proceeding with the wedding photos and requested a refund of the deposit. The same message was also sent in English the following day. Despite the request, the respondent insisted that the deposit was non-refundable, even though none of the agreed services had been provided. The claimant proceeded to file a claim for the full refund amount of RM3,000. In response, the respondent argued that the deposit was part of a binding agreement and that the cancellation was made for personal reasons, not due to any fault on their part. The respondent also filed a counterclaim for RM10,000, citing inconvenience, disruption, and administrative burden caused by the claim. During the hearing, the respondent's staff member, Ivylyana Edin, confirmed that no wedding photographs were taken but said reminders were sent to the claimant via WhatsApp. Salmi, in her ruling, cited Section 17(5) and (6) of the Consumer Protection Act 1999, which allows consumers to cancel a future services contract at the point the cancellation is communicated to the supplier — in this case, via WhatsApp. Under Section 17(2) of the same Act, the Tribunal found the claimant was entitled to a refund after deducting 5 per cent of the full contract price, amounting to RM2,850. Malaysian boy enters record books with amazing memory for world currencies

Devakshean could make history with his extraordinary ability to identify 65 currencies from various countries in a single minute. Thanks to this unique skill, his name has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for the achievement of 'Most Foreign Currencies Identified by a Child in One Minute'. His mother, G. Devamalar, 37, from Negeri Sembilan, said her son began showing interest in national flags when he was just one year old, and could already accurately identify and name the Malaysian flag. 'From an early age, we could see his extraordinary abilities. When we showed him pictures or flags, he remembered them quickly. So, from there, we started training him, and at the age of two, he set a record by identifying over 200 countries and cities. 'His memory is truly exceptional—whatever we show him, he can remember. Not only flags and currency values but much more—he picks things up quickly,' she told reporters after a certificate of recognition was presented by MBR representative V. Menaga to Devakshean here today. Devamalar said she and her husband, A. Devakumaran, 41, have always supported their only child's interests and development. She also said it took about a month of preparation to train Devakshean before applying for MBR recognition this year. 'My son loves watching YouTube. So, we uploaded content such as lists of foreign currencies and the like to YouTube, and he learned on his own through that platform. He rarely plays—he enjoys reading books and learning on his own. That's just his nature. We've never forced him—it's his passion,' she said. Devamalar also hoped her son's extraordinary achievement would open doors to more opportunities, including possibly entering the Guinness World Records, and uncovering other potential areas that could be nurtured in the future. Malaysia looks to Thailand, Japan for year-round fruit production
KLANG: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is turning to Thailand and Japan as models for research to enable year-round production of seasonal fruits in Malaysia. Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu highlighted ongoing efforts by the Department of Agriculture (DOA) and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) to develop new seed varieties. 'We are carrying out R\&D, especially by DOA and MARDI, to produce new seeds and so on. The MARDI durian, for example, was produced recently in Kuala Kangsar. Delicious. High quality,' he said during the launch of the National Campaign to Eat More Local Fruits and Vegetables. The event also marked the closing of FAMA Fest 2025 in Selangor. Mohamad stressed the government's commitment to promoting local fruits, including a mandate for official functions to serve only Malaysian-grown produce. 'During my visit to Thailand as the Minister of Defence, I was served food based on local fruits and vegetables throughout my time there. The same goes for Japan, almost 100 per cent local,' he added. Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli reported strong results from FAMA Fest, with sales exceeding RM800,000 from 50 entrepreneurs and over 40,000 visitors.
