Telangana BC Commission defends caste survey, dismisses criticism
The Telangana Backward Classes (BC) Commission has strongly objected to criticism of the caste survey done in the State.
Despite the fact that conducting a census falls under the purview of the Central Government, the Telangana survey was comprehensive, and covered all relevant factors through a meticulous house-to-house inquiry. The survey assessed caste-wise population, political, economic, social, educational, and employment of people, said BC Commission Chairman G. Niranjan.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, Mr. Niranjan said, 'An impressive 1,12,36,849 families (97.10%) were covered, with 94,261 enumeration blocks set up and 1,03,889 enumerators and supervisors appointed to collect information during the two-phase survey.'
The survey data led to a detailed discussion in the Assembly, resulting in the passage of two Bills that provided 42% reservation for BCs, with support from all parties regardless of affiliation. Critics of the survey should clarify who is responsible for the delay in conducting the 2021 census.
Stating that the caste survey in the State aimed to provide priority and reservation to BCs based on their population, he said that it remains unclear how the Centre's caste census will benefit BCs.

Two days before Bihar SIR deadline, 15 lakh yet to submit enumeration forms, one lakh untraceable: ECI
Around 15 lakh Bihar voters are yet to submit their enumeration forms with just two days to go for the July 25 deadline as part of the Special Intensive Revision of the State's electoral rolls, according to data from the Election Commission of India. Another one lakh voters remain untraceable. Also read: Bihar SIR: Election Commission shares list of voters who didn't submit forms or 'not found' with Bihar parties More than 98.01% of electors have been covered by the SIR exercise, the ECI said in a statement on Wednesday. However, 20 lakh have died, 28 lakh have permanently migrated, and 7 lakh have been found enrolled at more than one place, the ECI added. As part of the first phase of the SIR, lists of all 'primarily incorrectly included electors' — those who have been wrongly included in the existing electoral roll — and those who have not yet returned their enumeration forms were shared with 1.5 lakh Booth Level Agents on June 20, the ECI said. These agents have been nominated by the district presidents of the 12 major political parties of Bihar. Online submission The poll body said that Bihar electors who are currently temporarily residing outside the State, and have not registered as electors elsewhere, can fill in their form online at or through the ECINet mobile app. They can also take a printout of the form and sign it and send it to their Booth-Level Officer (BLO) through a family member, or fill and sign their printed form and send it to their BLO via WhatsApp. The names of electors who have submitted their enumeration forms will be included in the draft electoral roll. Electors can also confirm the submission of their forms. The Commission has sent SMS messages to all such electors whose mobile numbers are provided in their enumeration forms. Draft electoral roll The draft roll will be published on August 1, at the completion of the first phase of the SIR. If there is any error in the draft, any elector or political party can file an objection regarding the inclusion of the name of any proposed elector with the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) of the concerned Assembly Constituency by September 1. Similarly, if any eligible person does not find their name in the draft electoral roll, they can also file their claims with the ERO or AERO, the Commission said.

Safety, education and empowerment of women need support from all, says Women Commission chief
Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja on Wednesday (July 23) highlighted that the safety of women, along with their education and empowerment, must be a collective responsibility of families and society. Addressing the media here, Ms. Sailaja said the Commission was on a brisk tour of the districts with a mission to spread awareness on the issues faced by women. 'The government has launched a number of welfare, empowerment and safety initiatives, but the real change should come from women themselves as they should remain eternally vigilant and utilise all the technology and support systems at their disposal to ensure their safety and progress,' she said. Expressing serious concern at the incidence of online frauds, the panel chief cautioned women against falling victim to stalkers and strangers online. Ms. Sailaja further warned against the negative impact of certain films on students and youth, calling for early intervention and guidance from parents. She reiterated that the problem of child marriages would be sternly dealt with and that the enforcement agencies have been directed to launch awareness drives across vulnerable areas. Ms. Sailaja urged young women and girl students to channel their energy towards education and empowerment. Ms. Sailaja called on the managements of educational institutions and workplaces to constitute internal complaint committees to prevent incidents of sexual harassment and regularly organise orientation for girl students and women. She also unveiled the publicity posters on 'Prevention of Domestic Violence', appealing to the target groups to download and install the Shakti App on their mobile phones.
