Vinay Kumar, Pro Vice Chancellor (SBL), in his inaugural address, focused on the evolving nature of legal careers, stating: "Skilling is the most important thing that we are looking at the School of Law, and we are trying to make sure that our graduates get into diverse fields of law; not just criminal and litigation. At the School of Law, we make you reach a position to create your own opportunity and build your area of interest." The Presidential Address was delivered by Prof. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Vice Chancellor, SRMIST, who underscored three foundational pillars of professionalism: "First is Intellectual Rigour that gets into the up-to-date facts, judgments and technologies that drive the society. Second comes Ethical Integrity, to do things right in a way yet that relates with technical integration. Third comes Commitment to Fact and being fair to the case considering the petitioner and defendant." The keynote address was delivered by Ms. Sameena Chatrapathy, Senior Partner at Chugh Universal Legal, Chennai, who shared her personal journey and offered valuable guidance to the freshers, stating "There is something for everyone and there is always a space to make your mark. When we entered, there was just litigation. Anybody who was born out of law school went to do litigation. Seize the opportunities that work for you and make the most of it. Just believe in yourself. There's never a right or wrong, it's how much of what you make of the decision you make that measures how right the decision really was. Always hold strong values. As I said, values and ethics. Be open and honest. Never be driven by someone else's success, but by your own experience," The event also witnessed the unveiling of the Academic Annual Report 2024-25, curated by Dr. R. Keerthana (Editor-in-Chief) and Dr. G. Aarthi (Associate Editor), with contributions from student coordinators. Approval delay forces postponement of Ambedkar Law School building ceremony
Nagpur: The ground-breaking ceremony for the new state-of-the-art building of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar School of Law, scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed due to pending administrative approval from the state government. Nagpur University (NU) had planned a grand ceremony to be attended by the Chief Justice of India (CJI), who was also to inaugurate the country's first Constitution Preamble Park and unveil a life-size statue of Dr BR Ambedkar on the campus. School of Law director Ravishankar Mor told TOI that the Rs250-crore proposal has cleared two levels of scrutiny and is now with the state's ministry of higher and technical education. "The project is on fast track. The design and technical hurdles have been cleared. Once the finance department gives its nod, we will proceed with laying the foundation stone," he said, adding that the approval is expected shortly. The project is part of the institution's centenary-year transformation. Formerly known as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College, the institute has a rich legacy, having produced two Chief Justices of India, a Prime Minister, and several Supreme Court and High Court judges, besides eminent lawyers. In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the NU recently merged its postgraduate law department with the college to form the School of Law, which now offers education from undergraduate to PhD level under one roof. The new five-storeyed academic block will come up on open land behind the existing college building. Designed to mirror landmark structures like the RBI, High Court and GPO, the building will house two large auditoriums and curved, tech-enabled classrooms. A three-level basement parking facility for up to 5,000 vehicles is also part of the ambitious plan.

It featured a unique invention by an English professor who turned dry coconut leaves into eco-friendly straws . It all began on October 3, 2017, when Prof Varghese was walking home after class and spotted a dry coconut leaf on the ground. He noticed that part of it had naturally curled into the shape of a straw. Curious, he took it to a lab and steamed it under high pressure. To his surprise, the heat brought out a shiny surface on the leaf, sparking the idea of making it a plastic alternative. He began experimenting with food-grade glue and different techniques. After months of trials, he developed a multi-layered straw in early 2018 that was strong, anti-fungal, and could stay firm in water for more than six hours. Even better, the straws had a shelf life of over 12 months. Live Events How did it help others? Prof Varghese didn't stop with just creating the straws. He set up small production units in villages across Madurai , Tuticorin , and Kasargod, giving jobs to rural women. The straws were launched under the brand name SunBird, and soon, local food businesses started placing orders. What happened next? The innovation gained popularity quickly. Within a year, Prof Varghese's straws were being exported to 25 countries, including the US, Australia, and several European nations. His work has not gone unnoticed.
