Briefing given to CM Maryam: Monsoon rains: at least 108 killed, 388 injured
This was revealed in a briefing given to the Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif who reached PDMA Headquarters.
The CM was briefed for three hours on the situation of rains and floods in Punjab. She was apprised about the pre-emptive measures being taken to cope up with the hazards of monsoon spell. She visited the central control room of PDMA. A briefing was given on the Flood Forecast Division, International Weather Portal, Simulation Model, Early Warning System.
The Chief Minister observed the working of the central control room and interacted with the representatives of various departments working in the control room.
DG PDMA also apprised about the situation of rivers, dams and barrages in Punjab. DG Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Irfan Ali Kathia gave a detailed briefing to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
It was informed in the briefing that 1063 people were rescued by taking immediate action during the torrential rains and flash floods. People trapped in the rainwater in Jhelum and Chakwal were rescued in 23 minutes. On receiving a tip-off, NDMA was contacted and an army helicopter was called. The victims were shifted to safe places for an average of 15 minutes.
'No one died during the rains due to negligence of any person or government institutions. Six people stranded in a flood torrent in Rawalpindi district were rescued by a helicopter. The district administration and Rescue 1122 rescued 450 people in Rawalpindi district. 27 people were rescued by a helicopter in Chakwal district,' the CM was briefed.
The briefing further informed that Rescue 1122 saved the lives of 182 people in Chakwal district. 160 people were rescued by a helicopter in Jhelum district. In Jhelum district, Rescue 1122 took timely action and rescued 174 people and Pak Army rescued 64 people. The second major spell of rains in Punjab is likely to start from July 21. The PDMA control room has made it possible to contact every house in different areas of 20 districts of Punjab. During July, August and September, Punjab is expected to receive 25 percent excess rain in general and 40 to 60 percent in 16 districts. The situation of the river in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur is normal.
It was further informed in the briefing that as soon as the information was received that the people were going home in the rainwater, the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner went there late at night and monitored the relief operations. 200 life jackets, 100 life rings and 10 boats are available to protect the flood affected citizens. Due to desalting, water was drained from the low-lying areas of Rawalpindi in a few hours.
The Irrigation Department, WASA, Municipal Committee and Corporation have desalted 22522 kilometers of rivers and canals across Punjab. Special attention was given to eliminating encroachments in the path of rivers and flood waters across Punjab. 11463 life jackets, 3386 tents, 4450 life rings and 1761 boats have been provided from the warehouses of PDMA to deal with any emergency situation.
The briefing further informed that mock exercises, dewatering sets and other equipment were checked in succession before the arrival of monsoon. Every safety embankment was completely inspected across Punjab. 18 relief camps were established in Jhelum, food packets and other essential items were delivered to flood affectees.
The Chief Minister monitored a special drone to deliver life jackets to the people trapped in rainwater. She appreciated the performance of DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia and the whole team. She commended the district administration, Rescue 1122, police and other relevant institutions. She also expressed gratitude to the Pakistan Army for assisting in the rescue and relief operations in Punjab.

Water flow in rivers increasing
LAHORE: Water flow in rivers is increasing due to monsoon rains and glacier melting. There is low-level flooding in the Indus River at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa. Water flow in the Ravi, Jhelum and Sutlej rivers is at normal level. Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia said that there is low-level flooding in the Chenab River at Khanki. The inflow of water at Khanki is 120,000 while the outflow is 116,000 cusecs. The water flow in the Chenab River at Marala, Qadirabad and Trimon is normal. The inflow of water at Kalabagh is 332,000 while the outflow is 324,000 cusecs. The inflow of water at Taunsa is 363,000 while the outflow is 357,000 cusecs. The water flow at Tarbela is 350,000 cusecs. The water inflow at Chashma is 340,000 and the outflow is 320,000. There is a risk of flooding in major rivers and their adjacent streams of Punjab from July 22 to 24. The water flow in Dera Ghazi Khan rivers and canals is normal. DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia has issued instructions to the administration of the concerned districts to remain alert. Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia said that in view of the possible flood threat, arrangements are complete in vulnerable districts. The water level in Mangla Dam is 50 percent, in Tarbela it is 79 percent. The water level in Indian dams on Sutlej, Beas and Ravi is up to 36 percent. PDMA Control Room and District Emergency Operation Centres are monitoring the situation 24/7. The public is requested to take precautionary measures during the rainy season. Heatwave grips in Lahore, monsoon brings rain, flood risks to other regions

Photo: AFP A heatwave and rising humidity have intensified across Lahore and much of Punjab, with dry conditions persisting in most areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a maximum temperature of 34°C and a minimum of 27°C for Lahore as the city experiences elevated temperatures. Although a new monsoon system is expected to enter Pakistan today, Lahore is unlikely to see significant rainfall in immediate days. The fourth monsoon spell is anticipated to be stronger than previous ones and will bring thundershowers, wind, and rain to various regions, including Rawalpindi, Murree, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and parts of southern Punjab. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for the risk of heavy rainfall and flooding from July 20 to 25, urging local authorities to remain vigilant. River levels in the Ravi, Jhelum, Sutlej, and Chenab are expected to rise, and medium-level flooding is already being reported in the Indus River. To manage the potential impact, provincial agencies such as WASA, LWMC, and local municipalities have mobilised emergency measures to handle flood risks, and authorities have enforced Section 144 around rivers and streams to ensure public safety. Other parts of the country, including Kashmir, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, North-East Punjab, the Potohar region, Gilgit-Baltistan, North-East and South Balochistan, and South Sindh, are expected to experience rain, wind, and thundershowers over the next twelve hours. In contrast, hot and humid weather will continue to dominate in the rest of the country. Temperatures this morning were recorded in major cities as follows: Islamabad at 28°C, Lahore and Karachi both at 29°C, Peshawar at 30°C, Quetta at 22°C, Gilgit at 24°C, Murree at 17°C, and Muzaffarabad at 25°C. The PDMA has urged the public to stay updated with weather forecasts and follow safety protocols, particularly in flood-prone areas, as rainfall and river rises could pose significant flood risks over the next few days.

‘Sindh govt fully prepared for monsoon challenges'
KARACHI: As the monsoon season sets in, Spokesman Sindh Government Mustafa Abdullah Baloch has announced that the Sindh Government is fully prepared to tackle the challenges expected from upcoming heavy rains, saying that the provincial administration has taken all necessary steps to safeguard lives, agriculture, and infrastructure. Baloch has said that the Monsoon Contingency Plan 2025 has been activated across the province in coordination with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and district administrations. The plan includes de-silting of drains, deployment of dewatering pumps, establishment of emergency control rooms, and a province-wide alert system to respond swiftly to any rain-related emergency. ' He said that special attention is being given to rural areas where the impact of flooding can be more severe. The Agriculture and Livestock Departments have activated mobile units for veterinary care and fodder distribution. Crop-monitoring teams are also in place to assess potential damage and provide immediate support. He said that the government is in close coordination with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) for real-time weather updates. He noted that early warnings are being shared with all local bodies, and flood-prone areas are under active surveillance. 'We are ready to respond the moment a risk is detected.' To ensure public safety, the Information Department has launched a mass awareness campaign across television, radio, and digital platforms. Citizens are being advised to follow safety guidelines, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, and contact local help-lines in case of emergencies. 'The Sindh Government has taken all necessary precautions to mitigate the risks associated with heavy rains. With well-coordinated planning, adequate resources, and active field teams across the province, we are in a strong position to respond effectively to any situation that may arise.
