Where is Bitra, why govt want to take over the island and why are locals protesting: All you need to know

Mint3 days ago
A new report claimed on July 19 that the government of Lakshadweep is planning to take over Bitra island. The administration's move invited strong protest by the locals and Lakshadweep MP Hamdullah Sayeed, who said, "The land handed over by our ancestors is ours only. Here's all you need to know about Bitra island's takeover:
Bitra is the smallest inhabited island located in the northern region of Lakshadweep. According to the government's website, it has a length of 0.57km and a width of 0.28km at the broadest point.
It's around 483 km away from Kochi, Kerala. As per the 2011 census, the population of Bitra island is 271.
The Lakshadweep administration is considering the acquisition of Bitra for defence purposes, news agency PTI reported.
A government notification issued on July 11 outlined this proposal for the Department of Revenue to take over the entire land area of Bitra Island and transfer it to the relevant defence and strategic agencies of the Centre.
The notification clarified that the initiative is driven by the island's strategic location, its national security relevance, and the inherent logistical and administrative challenges posed by civilian habitation.
If the plan is implemented, Bitra would become the third island in Lakshadweep to host a defence establishment, following INS Dweeprakshak in Kavaratti and INS Jatayu in Minicoy.
According to the CSR Journal, the island of Bitra is strategically important to India as it lies in a key position in the Arabian Sea. Its proximity to major international shipping routes makes it significant for surveillance and defence.
The journal further claimed that the move is part of a larger national plan to boost defence presence on India's critical island territories.
"After recent strategic upgrades in the Indian Navy's bases at Minicoy and Androth islands, Bitra has come up for acquisition to complement India's surveillance network in the Arabian Sea," it added.
Minicoy is the southern most island in the Lakshadweep archipelago, which straddles primary maritime trade routes between the Strait of Malacca and the gulfs of Aden and Hormuz.
The report also cited defence experts as saying that the military installations in these islands will help India keep a close watch on the busy sea lanes, counter illegal activities, and respond quickly to maritime threats posed by neighbouring countries.
With the government's latest plan to boost its defence, the future of Bitra's residents remains uncertain. There are reportedly 105 families on the island and many have opposed the move.
According to South First, the islanders have started a social media campaign called 'Save Bitra Island' and organised a protest in Kochi against the administration. Protestors also burned a copy of the order and an image of Administrator Praful Khoda Patel.
The CSR journal reported that "as India seeks to strengthen its presence in the Indian Ocean through key island fortifications, the balance between national security needs and residents' rights is being tested once again in remote regions like Lakshadweep."
Lakshadweep MP Hamdullah Sayeed criticised the government's move as an attempt to displace the indigenous population. In a post on Instagram, he said the government's move is unjust and that "this land handed over by our ancestors is ours only."
In a statement issued by his office, the MP said Bitra is the smallest inhabited island in the UT and he would strongly protest against the administration's attempt to acquire it under the pretext of defense requirements.
Sayeed said that the land required for defense purposes has already been acquired by the government in several islands. He said that targeting Bitra, which has had a permanent population for decades, without considering any of these alternatives, is completely unacceptable.
He further criticised the administration for initiating such actions without any consultation with the indigenous residents, especially at a time when there are no functioning of local panchayat in the islands.
He stated that this kind of unilateral action undermines the democratic system and violates the constitutional rights guaranteed to citizens.
MP Hamdullah Sayeed extended complete support to the local residents of the island. He vowed to raise the issue in Parliament and explore both legal and political channels to resist the plan. He also demanded to withdraw the decision be withdrawn immediately.
The final decision on the acquisition will depend on the findings from the Social Impact Assessment and the central government's stance.
The Lakshadweep administration would take over the island as per the relevant provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resetlement Act, 2013 for which Social Impact Assessment study has to be undertaken for the affected area.
District Collector Shivam Chandra, in the order, said all stakeholders, including grama sabhas, would be consulted as part of the Social Impact Assessment initiatives.
The survey of the proposed area under the acquisition would be completed within two months from the date of the publication of the notification on July 11, it added.

"Stay Strong": Trump Ally Meets Imran Khan's Sons, Slams Political Arrests

/ Jul 23, 2025, 11:34AM IST Former US ambassador and Trump's envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, met with the sons of jailed PTI founder and former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in California. Calling Khan's imprisonment a case of 'political prosecution,' Grenell expressed solidarity with Sulaiman Isa and Kasim Khan, urging them to "stay strong." He drew parallels between Khan's legal troubles and former President Donald Trump's, stating that both leaders face politically motivated charges. Grenell also recalled better US-Pakistan relations under the Trump-Khan leadership. Meanwhile, PTI continues to raise alarm over Khan's detention conditions, warning of a looming constitutional and humanitarian crisis in Pakistan.#richardgrenell #imrankhan #pti #uspakrelations #donaldtrump#politicalprosecution #humanrights #adialajail #pakistanpolitics #imrankhanarrest #freeimrankhan

Delhi govt extends current EV policy till March 2026, plans BS4 truck retrofitment for BS6 compatibility

The Delhi government aims to have a wider and comprehensive public consultation about the draft EV Policy before its implementation. (Getty Images via AFP) Notify me The Delhi government has decided to extend the current Delhi EV Policy until March 31, 2026, as it aims to facilitate wider public consultation for the draft of the new policy. Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh on Tuesday announced that the draft of the new Delhi EV Policy will undergo wider public consultation, which is expected to take time, resulting in an extension of the current EV Policy. PTI quoted Singh saying that the policy extension was among the matters listed for Tuesday's Cabinet meeting, and it has been decided to extend the same. 'The current Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy has been extended until March 31, 2026, or until a new policy is approved, whichever is earlier," Singh reportedly said to the news agency. The minister said that the move aims to facilitate comprehensive consultations with all the relevant stakeholders, including citizens, industry experts, private organisations, and environmental groups. During this extended period, key provisions of the Delhi EV Policy will be discussed, including strengthening the electric vehicle charging infrastructure, reviewing subsidies and waivers to boost EV adoption, developing robust systems for safe e-waste and battery disposal, and clearly defining the role of the public and private sectors in advancing the electric mobility ecosystem. Singh added that given Delhi's air pollution crisis, this participatory approach is seen as a crucial step towards framing a more effective, inclusive, and forward-looking EV policy that promotes clean and sustainable urban transport. He also added that the government has urged active public participation in the consultation process to collectively shape the future of electric mobility in the capital. The current Delhi EV Policy was first introduced in 2020. It lapsed in August 2023, but since then, it has been extended multiple times. The Delhi government had discussed the draft policy on April 15 but deferred the approval of key proposals, including the phasing out of CNG auto-rickshaws and fossil fuel-based two-wheelers within two years. The draft policy envisions 100 per cent electric vehicle adoption in the national capital over the next three years. Delhi govt plans to retrofit BS4 trucks to BS6 compatibility In view of the approaching ban on the entry of BS4 trucks in the national capital, the Delhi government is going to invite innovative ideas for retrofitting of these commercial vehicles to meet BS6 compliance, said Delhi's Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Tuesday. The minister has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to hold an innovation challenge to find technological solutions to the issue. PTI has reported that the winning entry, whose technology will be used by the government, will be awarded a prize money of ₹ 25 to ₹ 50 lakh. The innovation challenge will be held in three stages — in the first stage, the proposal will be evaluated based on the paper submitted; the second stage will be focused on carrying out an exhaustive study of the proposal, following which ₹ 5 lakh will be given for testing the technology as part of the third stage. The certification will be given by The National Physical Laboratory (NPL). Sirsa said that if commercial vehicles won't be allowed to enter Delhi, it would lead to a crisis. "We will hold this challenge to invite solutions for retrofitting of BS4 trucks," he reportedly said. The minister also added that this will also help in curbing pollution in the national capital. The challenge will also involve finding solutions to reduce emissions from BS4-compliant vehicles. "The innovation challenge will be focused on identifying and promoting low-cost, easy-to-maintain and effective technological solutions capable of reducing/absorbing PM 2.5 and PM 10 emissions of at least twice the amount emitted from BS-IV vehicles operating," the minister said. This move from the Delhi government comes at a time when, from November 1 this year, only BS6, CNG or electric commercial vehicles will be allowed to enter the city. India extends airspace closure for Pakistan planes till Aug 24

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) India has extended the closure of its airspace for Pakistan planes by another month till August 24. In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people on April 22, India closed its airspace for planes operated, owned or leased by Pakistan airlines and operators, including military flights, with effect from April 30. The ban is part of various measures taken by the government against Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. 'The Notice to Airmen (NOT AM) restricting Pakistani aircraft from entering Indian airspace has been officially extended till 23rd August 2025," Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said. This extension reflects continued strategic considerations and is in line with prevailing security protocols, the minister said in a post on X late on Tuesday. Initially, the ban was to end on May 24 and the same was extended first till June 24 and then till July 24. The fresh NOTAM is applicable till 2359 hours (UTC) on August 23, which means till 0530 hours (IST) on August 24. Meanwhile, Pakistan has also extended by one month the closure of its airspace for Indian aircraft till August 24. On April 24, Pakistan banned its airspace for India until May 24, after the Indian government suspended the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. The airspace curb was extended till June 24, then till July 24 and again by another month.
