OHS junior places 3rd in UIL Spelling and Vocabulary contest
Javier Ruiz, who teaches English 4 (seniors) and coaches Academic Decathlon and UIL Spelling at OHS, said Sivakumar is an amazing young man.
"He handles his rigorous school load plus devotes time to band and UIL. He is very talented! I hope we get to work together again next year!" Ruiz said.
This was Sivakumar's first time making state in the contest and he said his spelling bee preparation in middle school helped him get there.
"It was just something for me to ... exercise my interest with spelling," said Sivakumar, now 17.
He added that he didn't know about the UIL Spelling and Vocabulary contest previously.
"But through high school, I just found out about it, and I started competing," Sivakumar said.
According to the UIL website, each year, the UIL Spelling and Vocabulary Contest is based on a different vocabulary list provided by UIL and consists of a three-part test.
Part I: A fifteen-minute section of 30 multiple-choice items focused on vocabulary and proofreading.
Part II and III: The hand-written spelling of 70 words pronounced aloud to contestants, as well as a tiebreaker section of 20 additional pronounced words, the site detailed.
Sivakumar, who will be a senior next year, added that he is pleased with how he did.
He added that Ruiz helped him and set everything up.
"He told me that he hadn't gone to state in 20 years doing this, and no one ever from the school has made state. So I told myself, okay, I'm going to be the first. And I told myself, I was going to put OHS on the map and do it for him, try and make state, and I did that, so I'm glad, and I also medaled at state, so I'm pretty satisfied," Sivakumar said.
Sivakumar is in the International Baccalaureate program at OHS.
"I love the IB program. Actually, my friends, we've all gotten super close through the IB program, all of us having the same classes together. ... I couldn't do it without ... my friends and teachers. They've been my biggest supporters throughout everything this year," he added.
He said preparing for these contests teaches you a lot of discipline and work ethic.
He could try the contest again next year, but he's not sure if he'll have the time with all his IB exams.
"I'm going to ponder it (and) see if I have the time to do it before making a decision on that," Sivakumar said.
The competition was held at UT Austin and he had a really good time touring the campus so he hopes to go there, Harvard or Brown in no particular order.
His sister Shreeya, an eighth grader at the Young Women's Leadership Academy, will be competing in the Scripps bee next week in Washington, D.C. The competition starts May 27.
Sivakumar wanted to make a shout-out to her, sending his support and hoping she does "the best she can."
He also thanked Ruiz.
"He's been ... a big help with all the travel and logistics. I'm glad I was able to make state for him, and I wanted to shout out the IB program. They've helped me so much. My friends and teachers, honestly, I couldn't do any of this without them. (I'm) just so blessed to have all of them in my life," Sivakumar said.

PSG 4-0 Real Madrid: European champs lay claim to title as best in world
PSG looked every bit the best team in the world (and then some) as the reigning European champions scored three goals in the opening 24 minutes and dismantled record UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid 4-0 in the second semifinal of the 2025 Club World Cup on Wednesday. MORE — Prize money list for Club World Cup It was one-way traffic from the opening whistle as PSG played through and around Real Madrid at will. Thibaut Courtois made a pair of fantastic saves in the opening five minutes to keep the score level, but he could only hold the last line of defense for so long — that is, until the 6th minute. Ousmane Dembele danced around defenders, perhaps earning a penalty if Fabian Ruiz hadn't followed up and slammed home the loose ball. Dembele got his goal just three minutes later, when Antonio Rudiger whiffed on a pass attempt and left the ball sitting on the sun-baked field at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (temperature: 90 degrees at kickoff). Dembele raced in behind and tucked a left-footed finish inside the far post to make it 2-0. Ruiz scored his second goal from the exact same spot in the 24th minute after Achraf Hakimi made his way down the right wing and picked out the Spanish midfielder in acres of space. Ruiz applied the emphatic finish once again and left the vast majority of the 80,000-plus in attendance (conservatively, 80-20 split in Madrid's favor) in stunned silence. Luis Enrique emptied the bench in the second half and it was one of his five substitutes, Goncalo Ramos, who put the exclamation point on an incredibly dominant performance. PSG will face Chelsea in the Club World Cup final on Sunday (3 pm ET) back at MetLife Stadium, after the Blues beat Brazilian side Fluminense 2-0 in the first semifinal on Tuesday. They did have a tough time against Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals, but they got the job done, as they always seem to. Still, they did have two players sent off late on and that could impact them for this semifinal. PSG are the red-hot favorites to win this competition and it feels like they are destined to dominate the club game for years to come. MORE — Club World Cup schedule, bracket Real Madrid have really settled in to their new 3-5-2 formation under new manager Xabi Alonso and were pretty comfortable in their quarterfinal win against Borussia Dortmund. Well, until the final few minutes when they almost imploded. Kylian Mbappe is pushing hard to start as he's recovered from his stomach issue and there will be so much focus on the former PSG striker before, during and after this massive semifinal. PSG team news, focus Luis Enrique has lost both Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez to suspension after they were sent off in the quarterfinal against Bayern. Lucas Beraldo will likely come in to start for Pacho at center back and the only other selection dilemma Enrique has is whether to start Ousmane Dembele up top. Dembele came on and scored against Bayern and now he's back from injury it's likely he starts this game ahead of Bradley Barcola. Real Madrid team news, focus Xabi Alonso has a couple of big decisions to make in terms of his starting lineup. Dean Huijsen is suspended after picking up a red card late on against Borussia Dortmund. The young center back has been excellent in his first few games for Real Madrid but he will miss this huge match and Raul Asencio is likely to come in. Kylian Mbappe scored a beauty late on against Dortmund after coming off the bench and he will surely start against PSG. Young forward Gonzalo Garcia has been a revelation up top, scoring four goals in five games so far to lead the competition in scoring. But this is Mbappe. Against PSG. He has to start. David Alaba, Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga and Endrick remain out injured. PSG vs Real Madrid prediction This is going to be a classic. You can just feel it. PSG will press high and try to dictate the tempo and Real are just fine with making the most of space on the counter. Hold on to your hats. PSG 4-3 Real Madrid.
