Companies must use advanced tools to detect and stamp out misinformation and deepfake content to help counter growing risks of election interference and financial fraud, the United Nations ' International Telecommunication Union urged in a report on Friday. Deepfakes such as AI-generated images and videos, and audio that convincingly impersonates real people, pose mounting risks, the ITU said in the report released at its "AI for Good Summit" in Geneva. The ITU called for robust standards to combat manipulated multimedia and recommended that content distributors such as social media platforms use digital verification tools to authenticate images and videos before sharing."Trust in social media has dropped significantly because people don't know what's true and what's fake," Bilel Jamoussi, Chief of the Study Groups Department at the ITU's Standardization Bureau, noted. Combatting deepfakes was a top challenge due to Generative AI 's ability to fabricate realistic multimedia, he said.Leonard Rosenthol of Adobe, a digital editing software leader that has been addressing deepfakes since 2019, underscored the importance of establishing the provenance of digital content to help users assess its trustworthiness."We need more of the places where users consume their content to show this information...When you are scrolling through your feeds you want to know: 'can I trust this image, this video...'" Rosenthol said.Dr. Farzaneh Badiei, founder of digital governance research firm Digital Medusa, stressed the importance of a global approach to the problem, given there is currently no single international watchdog focusing on detecting manipulated material."If we have patchworks of standards and solutions, then the harmful deepfake can be more effective," she told Reuters. The ITU is currently developing standards for watermarking videos - which make up 80% of internet traffic - to embed provenance data such as creator identity and timestamps.Tomaz Levak, founder of Switzerland-based Umanitek, urged the private sector to proactively implement safety measures and educate users."AI will only get more powerful, faster or smarter... We'll need to upskill people to make sure that they are not victims of the systems," he said.

ADVERTISEMENT From its issue price, the stock has fallen by 2.12%. Travel Food Services, a prominent operator of airport-based quick service restaurants (QSRs) and lounges, made its stock market debut on Monday with a 2.38% premium on the BSE. The shares opened at Rs 1,126.20 on the BSE and Rs 1,125 on the NSE, against the issue price of Rs 1,100. The IPO saw a moderate response from investors, closing with an overall subscription of 3.03 times. The Qualified Institutional Buyer (QIB) category recorded the highest demand at 8.10 times, while retail investor participation remained subdued at just 0.73 times. The Non-Institutional Investor (NII) segment was subscribed 1.67 times, indicating cautious interest from high-net-worth investors. Travel Food Services, backed by UK-based SSP Group, operates 397 quick service restaurant outlets and lounges across 14 airports in India and three airports in Malaysia, covering major hubs such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai. ADVERTISEMENT The company offers a diverse food and beverage portfolio comprising 117 partner and in-house brands, serving the rising demand for food and travel services at high-traffic transit locations. Financially, the company reported stable earnings growth in FY25, supported by robust EBITDA margins of 40% and a return on equity (ROE) of 35.47%. However, concerns have been raised over the IPO's valuation, priced at a P/E multiple of 48.6 times, particularly since the offer is entirely secondary with no fresh capital being raised. Robert Vadra appears before ED in Sanjay Bhandari case

NEW DELHI: Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate on Monday for his questioning in connection with the UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari linked money laundering case, official sources said. The businessman's statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. The 56-year-old Vadra was called by the agency to depose last month but he had sought deferment of his summons as he had to travel abroad. He is being investigated by the central probe agency in three different money laundering cases, including this one. The two others pertain to alleged irregularities in land deals. The 63-year-old Bhandari fled to London in 2016 soon after the Income-Tax department raided him in Delhi. He was recently declared a fugitive economic offender by a Delhi court. A UK court last month refused the Indian government's application seeking permission to appeal in Britain's Supreme Court against the discharge of Bhandari in an extradition case against him, virtually ruling out chances of his being brought to the country to face the law. The ED had filed a chargesheet in this case in 2023 alleging Bhandari "acquired" the 12, Bryanston Square house located in London in 2009 and got it renovated "as per the directions of Vadra and the funds for renovation were provided by Robert Vadra." Vadra has denied that he owned any London property directly or indirectly. Terming these charges as a political witch hunt against him, he has said that he was being "hounded and harassed" to subserve political ends.

India's wholesale inflation drops to -0.13% in June on food, fuel prices

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation dipped to -0.13 per cent in June, from 0.39 per cent in May, marking the first negative reading since the beginning of the year. The drop was largely driven by deflationary trends in food articles, fuel and power, and basic metals, according to the data released by the Commerce and Industry ministry on Monday. WPI-based inflation has been steadily easing since March and hit a 14-month low of 0.39 per cent the previous month. The WPI measures the average change in prices of goods sold in bulk and serves as a key indicator of inflation at the producer level. It reflects supply and demand trends across sectors such as agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. The WPI for all commodities stood at 153.8 in June, down from 154.1 in May. On a month-over-month basis, the index declined 0.19 per cent—a sharper fall compared to the 0.06 per cent contraction in May. WPI Food Index The food index, which comprises the majority of the WPI basket, declined by 0.26 per cent year-on-year, reversing the 1.72 per cent increase seen in May. This came despite a month-on-month increase in the Food Index to 190.2 from 189.5, supported by higher prices of vegetables, fruits, and milk. However, on an annual basis, vegetable prices were down, with the onions prices falling 33.49 per cent, and potatoes declining by 32.67 per cent. Fuel and power Fuel and power prices also softened, with the group index declining 2.65 per cent year-on-year. Within this category, electricity prices dropped 9.10 per cent sequentially. Petrol and diesel fell 6.57 per cent and 5.12 per cent respectively in Jne 2025 compared to the same month last year. RBI FY26 inflation forecast The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) anticipates inflation to remain moderate. In its last monetary policy meeting, the central bank projected retail inflation at 3.7 per cent for FY26, down from its earlier estimate of 4 per cent. The quarterly inflation forecasts are as follows: Q1 FY26: 2.9 per cent Q2 FY26: 3.4 per cent Q3 FY26: 3.9 per cent Q4 FY26: 4.4 per cent While favourable trends in food production and commodity prices support this outlook, the RBI cautioned that weather-related disruptions and changing global tariffs could still pose inflationary risks.
