Jay Blades' doomed final TV appearance revealed - with axed Repair Shop host just weeks away from filming star-studded reality show before domestic violence arrest

Daily Mail7 days ago
Jay Blades was reportedly set to be the face of a major new reality show just weeks before he was arrested for domestic violence.
The BBC presenter, 55, appeared in May to deny the coercive control of his estranged wife over a 20-month period.
The television presenter is alleged to have left Lisa-Marie Zbozen in fear of violence on at least two occasions while in an intimate or family relationship.
During the brief hearing, Judge James Burbidge KC refused a defence request to hear part of the hearing in private.
Jay was charged with a single count of 'controlling and coercive behaviour' between January 1 2023 and September 12 2024. He has entered a plea of not guilty.
The charge resulted in Jay being dropped from The Repair Shop 's live tour and the show's Christmas special.
However, it's now been reported Blades was signed up to star in ITV's new big budget reality show Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters.
A TV insider told The Sun how he was considered a 'big win for bosses' but 'given the boot' once news of his charge was revealed.
They said: 'Producers got lucky as they hadn't started filming or doing any promotion yet so were able to replace him with someone else.
'There were travel plans in place for the cast taking part in the show so it caused a lot of upset and disruption behind the scenes.'
MailOnline has contacted ITV and representatives for Jay.
Starting tonight, viewers will see Countdown's Rachel Riley, Amandaland's Lucy Punch and McFly's Dougie Poynter take part in Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters.
Also joining them is Ade Adepitan, 52, Helen George, 40, Sir Lenny Henry, 66, and Ross Noble, 48.
Before being charged, Jay was the lead star of The Repair Shop, having anchored the BBC daytime show since its launch in 2017.
It even beat This Morning to scoop best Daytime TV Show at the National Television Awards in 2023.
In 2022, a special one-off episode of The Repair Shop for the BBC's centenary saw Blades and the repair team visit the King, when he was still the Prince of Wales, at Dumfries House in Scotland.
Blades was made an MBE by Charles in May 2022 for services to craft and in recognition of his work promoting heritage craft and restoration in the UK.
He was later invited to the King's Coronation at Westminster Abbey in May last year.
Blades is a trustee of the Heritage Crafts Association, a charity which aims to safeguard craft skills, of which the King is patron.
And Blades appeared in a Channel 4 documentary last year about his friendship with actress Dame Judi Dench, called 'Dame Judi and Jay: The Odd Couple'.

Tonight's (Monday 21 July) series four debut will see ITV star Martin Lewis make his acting debut in the BBC comedy, which sees Diane look for a new career. ‌ Back at the employment centre, Mandy confesses she only managed to last 40 minutes in her latest gig as a dog food taster, but she did walk off with some (stolen) freebies. ‌ ‌ It's one sacking too many, so Mandy is put on a 'restart scheme' to get her back to work, which involves a cringey meeting in a town hall. Everyone says her image is part of the problem, so poor Mandy tries to shop for a new look, but the staff don't even want her in the shop. Later, minding the desk at her friend's nail salon, Mandy runs into her high school nemesis. But the tide is turning. An increasing number of young women are discovering this profession, and many believe female recruits could revitalise a flailing industry. Brooke is only 20 years old, and enjoys going out on the boat, even though she's not a morning person. Alongside her work as a nail technician, she also makes a living hauling in shellfish off the Isle of Skye, and has been nominated for a prestigious industry award. Over on the West Highlands, we meet Erin, who spends a fortnight at a time battling the dangerous conditions of the North Atlantic to bring home delicious prawns. She admits that it can be tough sharing cabins with men and coping with rough seas, but she loves seeing the world from the water. Meanwhile, Emma skippers her own creel boat after following in her father's footsteps. ‌ She has proved herself (winning the same award Brooke is nominated for), but her proud dad admits that women face significant prejudice in the industry, with many fishermen not ready to accept this could be a woman's world. Brooke faced similar attitudes, but was determined to prove her doubters wrong. Erin reflects on the declining numbers of young people going into the business, and explains people need to accept women if they want fishing to thrive in the UK. Human ‌ So many natural history programmes give us insights into other species, but this landmark series reveals the fascinating secrets of our own. Incredible advances in DNA mean that we now understand that all humans alive today who do not have African origins, descend from a small group of Homo sapiens, who migrated to the Middle East. They were the first group to leave Africa, and proved incredibly successful in their quest for survival. Paleoanthropologist Ella Al-Shamahi explains how these humans managed to travel to Sri Lanka and make a home in the inhospitable rainforests there, hunting monkeys with hastily fashioned bone arrowheads. Ella also visits the Indonesian Island of Flores to introduce us to a species of human affectionately known as the 'hobbits', because of their likeness to the petite heroes of Lord of the Rings. How did this small but mighty species evolve and why did it fail to survive? Luke Littler and darts' new generation called out as 'boring' by two-time world champion who bemoans the lack of banter among today's stars

Two-time darts world champion Gary Anderson has hit out at the 'boring' younger generation of players with 'their bloody earphones in' as he bemoaned the lack of 'banter' in the modern game. Fresh from his first round victory over Luke Woodhouse on day two of the World Matchplay, The Flying Scotsman, 54, longed for his days competing with the likes of Adrian Lewis, Phil Taylor and Kevin Painter. 'Youngsters are boring. Absolutely boring,' said Anderson. 'You talk to them, they're too busy looking at their phone. They're sitting on their phones with their bloody earphones in. Don't talk to you. It's a completely different life.' He added: 'I was sitting thinking the other day, having a talk with (Ian) White, (Adrian) Lewis, (Phil) Taylor, (Kevin) Painter, we used to sit and have a cracking laugh. 'Nowadays, I'd rather sit like this. Nobody talks to anybody. You don't have a good laugh, you don't have a bit of banter. You need to have a laugh. Doesn't matter what you do in life, on a building site, office, you've always got to have a laugh. Nowadays, there's not much of that going about.' The new wave of darts players - led by current world champion Luke Littler - have helped usher the sport into a new age. There is more attention on events than ever and more money than ever for its stars. Anderson acknowledged the today's players are more professional than performers of the past but he insisted that they need to 'calm down' at times. 'The youngsters, they're here to do their job. They've realised they've got a great chance in life to make a lot of bloody money, buy their first house, then their second house. 'But they need to calm down and think: right, this is my job. That's it.'

Warrington choir ends on emotional high note after 192 years

"We are singing as well as we have done and it was good to end on a high," he said. The 64-year-old said the majority of the remaining members had been with the choir, which is one of the oldest continuing music societies in the country, for about 25 said the society had 90 members in the 1960s and 1970s."It was emotional," Mr Perfect said. "One member has been with us for 30 years. It was sad when it has some much history."We decided last year to end, though, as we were running out of money and have been unable to attract new members."
