For the crews cleaning hurricane debris from the Fort Myers Beach canals to make them safe to navigate again, there's never a dull moment.
The Town of Fort Myers Beach posted the following on its Facebook page on April 2:
This week, our contractors continued working to remove debris from the canals!
Navigation was restored to canals 17, 18, 21, and 30 last week, with contractors working in canal 28D today! Pictured are the items of debris pulled from canals and our contractors lifting a 40-foot shipping container from the bay near the Pink Shell Resort.
That's right.
A shipping container. According to Fort Myers Beach Harbor Master Curtis Ludwig, when empty this shipping container the crew found weighs 10,500 pounds. But this one weighed between 35,000-40,000lb.
"We recovered 21,000 pounds of mud out of it," Ludwig said. The container had electrical cables, light fixtures, and more electrical supplies inside the container."
Where did the shipping container end up?
"We towed the container to the Lee County boat ramp on San Carlos Island, where the container was cut up crushed and disposed of," Ludwig said.

The project, funded by FEMA, started in January and is scheduled to be wrapped up at the end of April when the contract ends, Ludwig said.
"We are currently operating in canal 29, which is where Fish Tale Marina is, along with the finger canals off that canal," Ludwig said. "They (crew) have found large items of debris in that canal. For an example, they will be floating and towing a dumpster out tomorrow. As of this week we have recovered roughly 1,300 cubic yards of debris."
Stay tuned. Who knows what they will find next?
Some people on the comments thread on the "I love Fort Myers Beach" Facebook group page had some thoughts:
Pickles McGee said, Have they found Hooters yet?
Brian Glaze said, Did they ever find the old times Square clock in the canal?
Erica Synder said, Did they find a 'big' wooden carving of 2 frogs?
Dixie Dahl Kooiker said, Just vacationed here. They are tireless volunteers doing an ugly job

How to Tell a Friend You Don't Like Their Partner

Credit - Photo-Illustration by TIME (Source Image:) When your friend is in love—and you're writhing in horror at the object of their affection—the first question to ask yourself isn't how to raise the subject. It's whether you should. The decision 'requires a lot of introspection,' says Jordana Abraham, co-founder of the women-focused website Betches and co-host of the dating and relationships podcast U Up? For example: Do you dislike their beau because they have different interests than you, not to mention an off-putting vibe that kills your delusions of double dates? Or are you genuinely worried about the way they're treating someone you care about deeply? 'One is about you,' Abraham says. 'And one is about you protecting your friend.' We asked experts exactly what to say without breaking up your friendship. 'How are things going with Jess?' It's best to enter conversations about your friend's romantic partner with an open mind and a positive attitude. 'Approaching it with curiosity and no judgment will make your friend much more open to hearing your opinions,' Abraham says. If you come across as though you've already made up your mind about their other half, they'll be less likely to confide in you about any issues, because you won't seem like an objective enough source, she adds. Aim to bring it up privately during a quiet moment, rather than in a group setting. 'Your happiness is always my first priority, but I also feel protective of you. There are a few things I've noticed that I'd love to talk to you about—would that be OK?' This approach centers your friend's wellbeing, while gently introducing your concerns in a judgment-free way. 'It tells them you're not trying to control their choices—you're just paying attention because you care,' says Jenny Dreizen, an etiquette expert and co-founder of Fresh Starts Registry, a website that offers scripts for tricky conversations. 'Ask for permission before diving in, and if they say they're not ready to hear it, respect that. It's about planting a seed, not demanding a reaction.' Read More: The Worst Thing to Say to Someone Who's Depressed 'I notice you seem different since you started dating Dan. What's changed for you?' The best thing about 'different' is that it's a neutral term, says matchmaker Aleeza Ben Shalom, who hosted the Netflix show Jewish Matchmaking. You're not telling your friend they seem any better or worse than usual—you're simply noting a change in personality and diving into what's behind it. 'It allows them to do some self-reflection and tell you what's going on—and maybe they'll have that 'aha' moment and see what you've also seen,' she says. 'You don't seem to be at your baseline happiness, and I'd love to see you in a relationship where you're at baseline or above.' It's never a good idea to compare your friend's new partner to an ex. Instead, reference their overall happiness, which could factor in their job, where they live, and their relationships, Ben Shalom says. 'It's acknowledging that the person they're with might be affecting them, but not in a way that makes you smile—in a way that makes you concerned,' she says. Read More: 8 Things to Say When Someone Lies to You Another approach Ben Shalom sometimes recommends: 'I don't know that your best self is coming through when you're with Matt.' Once you say this to your friend, follow up with a question: 'Does this resonate with you? Or am I off-base here?' Then allow them to guide the conversation; you'll be able to tell quickly if they're receptive to talking it out, or if you should back off. 'How was it when they met your family? What did they do to celebrate your birthday?' Asking about the more nuanced parts of your friend's relationship can provide insight. Since you're not phrasing your questions in a judgmental way, your friend is less likely to get defensive or clam up. 'They'll feel more free, if they are having an issue, to say, 'It didn't really go that well,' or 'He didn't get along with my mom,'' Abraham says. Your job after that is to make it clear you're a safe space for them to vent or ask for advice—and that you'll always be rooting for the best for them. 'What are the qualities you value most in a partner?' When you phrase a question like this, it's not taking a dig at one specific person—which makes it an ideal way to open a productive conversation, Ben Shalom says. Once your friend tells you what they value the most, ask a pointed follow-up: 'How in alignment do you feel Mike is with your values?' Then pause and allow them to reflect. 'They might be like, 'Well, we're not really connected in this area, but we're super connected here,'' she says. You'll get to learn more about why they're drawn to their partner—which could help shift your perspective. On the other hand, 'They could see, 'Wait a minute, maybe I'm in it for half the right reasons, but maybe this person as a whole isn't necessarily good for me.'' The best part? Your friend will be making the decision on their own, rather than feeling like you're making it for them. 'What's your gut telling you?' Especially in the early stages of a relationship, people often ask their friends: 'What do you think about so-and-so?' Ben Shalom likes to flip the question: 'What does your gut feeling tell you?' 'You don't have to point the finger and tell them—their insight is the most valuable thing to motivate whatever change needs to happen,' she says. 'And the truth is, they have to live with the decision. You don't have to. People pick their own person.' 'I just want to make sure you're up for handling a challenging relationship.' Some situations call for a more direct approach. Ben Shalom recalls the time someone asked her what she thought about their partner, and she replied: 'If you're asking me honestly, I don't think it's a great match. I don't think it's necessarily a smart match, and I don't think it's an easy match.' Then she added that, if they chose to move forward, she hoped they were prepared to navigate a challenging relationship. She recalls telling her friend: 'If you were working out, you could lift about five pounds. Maybe if you work out for a couple years, you'll work your way up to 50 or 100. I think you're trying to lift 500 pounds, and I just don't think you're ever going to be able to bench press that and hold it.' 'You know I'm always here, and always on your side.' Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is remind your friend that they're safe with you, Dreizen says. If they're in a dynamic that feels even slightly off, they might already be struggling with isolation or other challenging emotions—so a simple reassurance can help them feel grounded and loved. Read More: 14 Things to Say Besides 'I Love You' 'That's exactly what they need if they ever do want to open up or start questioning their relationship,' she says. 'Say it often. Not just once, not just when you're worried—make it part of your regular friendship language.' Repetition builds a safety net, and your friend will know who to turn to when they're ready. Mom freaks out, fires babysitter — just for ordering DoorDash on the job

Many parents have rules when it comes to others babysitting their little ones. No posting on social media, excessive screen time, or leaving the kids unsupervised come up a lot. No visitors is also a common one. But what happens when the 'visitor' is a delivery driver from DoorDash, bringing you some food? For one mom, this exact circumstance sent her spiraling. I got in trouble for ordering food while babysitting 4 Sharing the text exchange online, the babysitter wanted to know if she legitimately did the wrong thing. AFP via Getty Images A young woman took to Reddit recently to share an encounter between her and a mom she was babysitting for that left her absolutely baffled and questioning whether or not she was in the wrong. 'I ordered DoorDash while babysitting because I hadn't eaten since lunch and was getting a headache and they were 2 hours late. The kids were asleep, the food was left on the porch, and I stepped outside for 10 seconds to grab it,' the babysitter explained in the caption. 'The mom told me she was uncomfortable that someone came to the door and that I 'left the kids alone.' When I got home I was told they can't trust me anymore and I was fired,' she added. Sharing the text exchange online, the babysitter wanted to know if she legitimately did the wrong thing. Especially considering the mom found her on Facebook and did little background checks before hiring her for the evening. 'Was something delivered?' 4 'Yes, I didn't eat dinner so I ordered DoorDash,' the babysitter replied. Reddit The exchange began with the babysitter asking for a rough ETA from the mom after she claimed she'd be back at 8 p.m. – two hours prior. With a new confirmed arrival time of 11:30 p.m., the babysitter decided to order some dinner via DoorDash. As it turns out, it was the wrong thing to do. And an SMS was received shortly after the doorbell rang. 'Hey our Ring just showed someone at the door. Was something delivered?' the mom asked. 'Yes, I didn't eat dinner so I ordered DoorDash,' the babysitter replied. And that's when things spiraled. 'Okay, we'll talk when we get home, but I'm really concerned that you would do that without asking first. I would never be okay with a stranger coming to the door while my kids are sleeping. I really wish you had asked me before doing that,' the mom shot back – clearly not mincing her words. 'Please check to make sure the storm door is locked and the chain is locked as well since you opened them.' 'I get that you were hungry…' 4 Unfortunately for the babysitter, the clarification of events still wasn't enough. Reddit The babysitter apologized and went on to explain that she didn't anticipate still being at their home looking after the children after dinner, but due to the time change, she needed to order something. 'I'm sorry I made you uncomfortable. I just hadn't eaten since lunch and I thought I'd be done by 8 like you mentioned. I started getting a headache and I really needed to eat something. I've ordered food before while babysitting and it's never been a problem, so I didn't think it would be an issue,' she wrote back, while also offering some reassurance that she did all the right things. 'They left it at the door, and I waited until they were gone before I went out to grab it and locked the doors the way they were when I came back in.' Unfortunately for the babysitter, the clarification of events still wasn't enough. 'I get that you were hungry, but it's more about the fact that someone came to the door without my knowledge and you left them in the house alone while you grabbed it. If something had happened it just makes me really nervous,' the mom replied. 'You could have eaten from the cabinet. This is my home and my kids and I need to be able to fully trust who's here. We will talk later. Just please double check the doors.' The exchange ended with another apology from the babysitter. Babysitters weigh in with their horror stories 4 Plenty Reddit users agreed that this level of concern wasn't warranted from the mother. Simone – The post attracted many babysitters sharing their own horror stories – and this one is pretty tame compared to some. 'One time I babysat for people who found out that I went downstairs after putting their kid to sleep upstairs and they not only fired me, but talked sh** about me to other clients and I lost a couple jobs because of it,' someone commented. 'I'll be honest, my first instinct is this person is up to something that puts them at real risk. I have babysat for people who were pretty paranoid, but absolutely no one was to this level,' another added. Another babysitter shared: 'Once when I was a teen, I was babysitting regularly for a couple who had a young boy with autism, about 5. One night, they were supposed to be home by 7, but there was massive flooding and they couldn't get home until the next morning. About 5 a.m. they walked in the door and shook me awake cuz I'd fallen asleep on the couch. They then fired me for sleeping.' And plenty agreed that this level of concern wasn't warranted. 'This is ridiculous. Not only is she wildly inconsiderate for staying out 3.5 hours later without even asking you if that was okay…but you had to reach out to her to find out when she was coming home?' someone said. Others agreed that the mom was 'overreacting' and that the babysitter should 'drop her' as a client.

Bear was suspiciously familiar, Mississippi man says. Turns out they had history

Black bears may look alike to most of us, but Anthony Ballard swore he encountered one in the Mississippi wilderness that seemed familiar. Turns out he was right, only the bear weighed less than 5 pounds at their previous encounter. That was in 2023 when Ballard, a state biologist, found two adorable cubs in a den and implanted them with microchips as part of the Mississippi's bear tracking program. That microchip confirmed Ballard wasn't imagining things. 'When it is scanned, the scanner will display a unique number (like a serial number). I had my suspicions about who she was before, but when the reader picked up the tag I knew for sure,' he told McClatchy News in an email. 'Her litter mate (a male) was killed by a car in winter 2024, so I was glad to confirm she was still alive.' The reunion happened this month in Warren County, just over a mile and a half from where the two originally met, he says. The bear is now known as F60 in record books, and she roams turf near Eagle Lake, about a 65-mile drive northwest from Jackson. A July 21 Facebook post highlighting the bear's reappearance had more than 3,700 reactions and comments as of July 23, including from some who wondered if she was eating enough. 'To many, she may appear skinny but don't worry, this is normal!' the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks said in its Facebook post. 'Young bears often appear this way as their bones grow faster than their muscle and fat. She's still growing — similar to the human pre-puberty stage — so her frame looks lean and leggy for now. As she matures, she'll bulk up and grow into that build.' Mississippi's black bears were nearly wiped out a century ago due to overhunting and habitat destruction, the state says. In 1974, bears were added to the state's 'list of rare and threatened vertebrates of Mississippi.' 'Biologists currently estimate the Mississippi bear population to be about 150 bears in the state, which is a major improvement over the estimated 40 individuals in 2002,' the wildlife department says.
