AIIB aims to ramp up annual lending to USD 17 bn in 3-4 years
Currently, annual funding done by Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is around USD 10 billion.
The Beijing-based lender has so far provided loans worth USD 12 billion to India. Out of that, he said, AIIB has provided USD 1.8 billion to the private sector so far.
Speaking about the pipeline for sovereign funding, Pandey said, AIIB is having a series of meetings with various line ministries to create a pipeline of sovereign projects.
'Our message to the ministries and state governments is this: this is your bank and you must make optimum use of the resources available," he said at an event organised by Ficci here.
On Monday, he said, 'we had a detailed meeting with the Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, and Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation on the water sector, including revival of many dams, the Namami Gange project and the inter-linking of rivers." Besides, he said, 'we are going to have discussions with the ministries of health and power and then with the chief minister of Maharashtra and state officials to discuss building a pipeline of infrastructure projects both in public and private sector." As far as the private sector is concerned, he said, renewal energy, green energy, green mobility and affordable housing are the focus areas for funding.
'We are also open to funding digital infrastructure like data centres, digital communication or innovative projects like AI and semiconductor," he said.
Observing that India has doubled capital expenditure but the need is much higher, Pandey said, the country would need investment of about USD 1.5 trillion in infrastructure development as per an estimate.
This huge investment requirement cannot be met by the government alone, but there is a need to tap several sources including private sector, sovereign wealth fund, pension fund etc, he said.
Participation of a multilateral development banks like AIIB helps in de-risking any infra project, he said, adding, the selection process is very stringent and basis the selection, other financial firms also pitch in with their fund.
Given AIIB's thrust on the private sector, he said, the bank aims to gradually raise financing to the private sector to 50 per cent of total finance by 2030. PTI DP HVA

HC directs ECI, Centre, J-K govt to file response over ‘delay' in holding bypolls in two seats
Budgam assembly seat fell vacant after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who won two seats in the assembly elections held in September 18-October 1, last year, retained the Ganderbal seat and vacated Budgam while taking oath. Justice Sanjay Dhar passed the directions after hearing a writ petition filed by former minister Harsh Dev Singh who alleged by-elections in Budgam and Nagrota have not been held despite a mandate to hold such polls within six months of when the seat went vacant. Jammu, Aug 4 (PTI) The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Monday directed the Election Commission, the central government and the J-K government to file their response within four weeks over alleged delay in holding bypolls in two assembly seats. Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana who had won the Nagrota seat died on October 31 last year, necessitating a bypoll from the constituency. Singh, who appeared in person, said the by-elections in the two constituencies have been denied in violation of plethora of rulings of various courts and the provisions of Section 151A of Representation of the People Act (RPA), which mandate holding such elections within a period of six months from the date of occurrence of such vacancies. 'The existing laws required the elections to be held before ending March 2025,' the petitioner said. The next hearing in the case has been listed for September 8. ‘Kamal Haasan working to defame Hindus': VHP on his Sanatan Dharma remarks
VHP national secretary general Surendra Jain said those who say such things about 'Sanatan' are either 'mischievous' or 'innocent'. This came after actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Haasan stoked a political row with his remarks that education is the only weapon that could 'break the chains of autocracy and the Sanatan Dharma'. New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday slammed Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan over his controversial remarks on 'Sanatan' and accused him of working with an agenda to 'defame Hindu society'. 'Haasan cannot be innocent. He is deliberately working under an agenda to defame Hindu society,' he said when asked for comment. The senior VHP functionary also slammed NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Ahwad for his reported remarks that 'Sanatan has ruined India', saying both Haasan and Ahwad are of the 'same mentality'. 'You have courage to even say this much about Sanatan because Sanatan is kind and allows every kind of opposition and dissent,' Jain said. 'But, abusive language is not acceptable in any civilized society,' he added. The VHP functionary said Sanatan Dharma connects people with the bond of love and mutual relations, and 'liberates' the society and individuals. 'Kamal Haasan, you can not break this bond of love and mutual relations,' he said. 'Roots of Sanatan are as strong in southern India as it is in north India. A living form of Sanatan can be seen at temples in southern India.' PTI PK PK SKY SKY This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.

India rejects criticism over its procurement of Russian crude oil; calls out US, EU
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a rare statement rebutting the criticism against New Delhi's energy ties with Moscow, hours after US President Donald Trump threatened more tariffs on India. Firmly rejecting the criticism, India pointed out the continuing trade relations the US and the European Union have with Russia. New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) India on Monday mounted a sharp counterattack on the US and the European Union for their 'unjustified and unreasonable' targeting of New Delhi for its procurement of Russian crude oil. India has been targeted by the United States and the EU for importing oil from Russia after the commencement of the Ukraine conflict, the MEA said. In fact, India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict, it said. 'The US at that time actively encouraged such imports by India for strengthening global energy markets stability,' it added. The MEA said India's imports are meant to ensure predictable and affordable energy costs to the Indian consumer. 'They are a necessity compelled by global market situation. However, it is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia,' it said. 'Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,' it added. The MEA said the Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy, but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel and machinery and transport equipment. 'Where the US is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilizers as well as chemicals,' it said. 'In this background, the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,' the MEA said.
