India coach Gambhir faces growing pressure ahead of second England Test

NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir is under growing pressure ahead of the second Test against England after India's loss at Headingley made it seven defeats in 11 red-ball matches since he became coach last year.
The 43-year-old former opening batsman is facing flak from some quarters for his selections, man management and how he carries himself in press conferences.
India are ushering in a new era following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with Gambhir widely reported to have played a part in the exit of at least one of the two veteran stars.
Led by new captain Shubman Gill, the visitors were beaten by five wickets in the opening Test of the five-match England series, adding to a growing sense of alarm.
The second Test at Edgbaston starts on Wednesday and patience is wearing thin back home.
'Gautam Gambhir is under significant pressure. The situation is becoming increasingly tense,' former India batsman Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
'He has managed two wins against Bangladesh and one against Australia, but we've lost three matches to New Zealand, three to Australia and now one to England.
'He has been losing and losing.'
Gambhir, who as a player had a key role in India's ODI World Cup triumph in 2011, succeeded Rahul Dravid in July last year.
Dravid signed off a largely successful three-year tenure by winning the T20 World Cup.
Gambhir was chosen as his successor almost exactly a year ago but he and his side suffered a significant bloody nose when they went down 3-0 to New Zealand.
It was India's first Test series defeat at home in 12 years.
'Aggressive'
Along with chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Gambhir was criticised for leaving middle-order batsman Sarfaraz Khan out of the squad for England.
Karun Nair was picked ahead of Sarfaraz, who had scores of 68 not out and 56 against a visiting England last year, and made 150 versus New Zealand in Bengaluru.
Gambhir's detractors say he is hot-headed and accuse him of acting too much on instinct.
Speaking ahead of the series, Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik said that 'tactically, Gauti (Gambhir) is a very good coach.
'Man management is the area that I am sure he would be looking at,' he told Sky Sports' cricket podcast.
'But one thing about him is that he is looking out for his players, which is massive.
'What I feel at times is that the way he is aggressive as a captain, you can't be as a coach.'
Critics don't like Gambhir's press conferences.
India not altering plans to rest Bumrah despite loss to England
Following the defeat at Headingley, Gambhir looked ruffled and snapped in reply to a question about Rishabh Pant's centuries in each innings.
Former batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has said that Gambhir should be kept away from the media, after the coach bit back at Ricky Ponting ahead of the tour to Australia last year.
India went on to lose the series 3-1.
Bumrah mismanaged?
On the last day of the first England Test, when the hosts chased down 371, senior batsman KL Rahul and Gill's deputy Pant were seen making the fielding changes, rather than the skipper.
In the final overs it appeared pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah rejected Gill's idea of bringing him back into the attack.
Bumrah, who will only play two more Tests in the series to manage his workload, returned figures of 5-83 in England's first innings of 465 but went wicketless second time around.
A fit, firing and content Bumrah is key to India's chances.
South African great AB de Villiers questioned whether it was 'mismanagement' or injury that was the cause of Bumrah being rested at a crucial point of the match.
Lack of bowling support for Bumrah and India's lower-order collapses – from 430-3 to 471 all out in the first innings and 333-4 to 364 in the second – also hurt the team in Leeds.
In a country where cricket is an obsession and every match is dissected for days afterwards, Gambhir needs to quickly find some answers.

PHF welcomes reports of India allowing Pak for Asia Cup

Pakistan has expressed hope that sporting ties with India could begin to improve very soon. PHOTO: AFP Pakistan hockey officials and team captain Ammad Shakeel Butt have welcomed reports from India suggesting their national team will be allowed to compete in the upcoming Asia Cup, but stressed that any participation will hinge on approval from Islamabad. Indian media, citing sports ministry sources, reported that Pakistan's hockey team will face no hurdles in travelling to India for the tournament, scheduled in Rajgir, Bihar from August 29 to September 7. According to the Press Trust of India, the Indian sports ministry has already secured permissions from both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs, Telecom Asia Sport ( learnt on Friday. The Asia Cup is a crucial event for Pakistan hockey, serving as a qualifying tournament for next year's World Cup to be co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Secretary Rana Mujahid struck a cautiously optimistic note when speaking to Telecom Asia Sport. "We have to wait and see to ascertain the credibility, but surely these are positive developments," Mujahid said. "However, let me make it clear—our participation will depend on clearance from the government." Given this context, PHF officials had already written to the Asian Hockey Federation and the International Hockey Federation, seeking guarantees that players would receive the necessary visas not only for the Asia Cup but also for the FIH Junior World Cup, which India's Tamil Nadu state will host in November. Pakistan head coach Tahir Zaman said he was encouraged by the developments. "This is good news for not only Pakistan hockey but also for the international game," Zaman told Telecom Asia Sport. "Our participation will still depend on government clearance, and we look forward to that." Zaman added that players have been instructed to stay ready despite the uncertainty. "We are planning to hold a preparation camp for the Asia Cup, and even at this stage, players have been told to keep working on their fitness at home." Team captain Ammad Shakeel Butt also welcomed the reports and expressed hope that sporting ties between the two nations could begin to improve. "We welcome this and hope to get ready for the event as and when we get the permission," Butt said. Last month, he publicly appealed for the restoration of sporting ties between India and Pakistan.

Record-breaking Gill double ton takes India to 564-7 against England

BIRMINGHAM: Records tumbled as India skipper Shubman Gill stood tall with a commanding and unbeaten knock of 265 on day two of the second Test against England, propelling the tourists to a mammoth total of 564-7 by tea at Edgbaston on Thursday. Despite losing his overnight partner Ravindra Jadeja in the first session for 89 - the second India batter to miss out on a century after Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) - Gill looked completely at ease on a flat track that offered precious little assistance. After resuming on an overnight score of 310-5, Jadeja and Gill had built a 203-run stand before the all-rounder fell to a Josh Tongue bouncer but Gill showcased his array of elegant drives and well-timed flicks to worry England. As the home side's bowling attack toiled under the summer sun, Gill hardly broke sweat and had put a price on his wicket in the first session before he decided to accelerate the scoring rate after lunch. Tongue was smashed for two boundaries in one over, the second nearly taking out two top order England batters when Joe Root and Zak Crawley almost collided near the boundary rope and fell together in a heap. Washington Sundar had survived a barrage of bouncers when he walked in before lunch but soon dealt his own Tongue-lashing when he pulled the fast bowler over the fine leg boundary and into the stands. Stokes denies Jaiswal century as India advance to 182-3 Gill then brought up his 200 with a low pull shot to fine leg, with the 25-year-old taking off his helmet to make his trademark bow to a standing ovation as he became the first India skipper to score a double-hundred in England. England captain Ben Stokes tossed the ball to part-timer Harry Brook and Gill punished him with three consecutive boundaries, breaking Sunil Gavaskar's 46-year-old record for the highest score by an Indian in England (221 in 1979). Gill was soon toying with the attack and the placement of fielders, coolly switching between sublime and unorthodox shots as he dispatched the ball to all corners of the ground. With Sundar playing patiently at the other end, Gill was in Twenty20 mode as they cruised past the 500-mark and a rare outside edge went for a boundary to take the captain to 250 as Brook sank to his knees with a wry smile. He became the first Indian to score more than 250 outside the Indian subcontinent, breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record of 241, while he also recorded the highest score by an India captain when he went past Virat Kohli's 254. The 144-run stand for the seventh wicket was finally broken when Root came back into the attack and a delivery broke through Sundar's defence to crash into middle stump as he departed for a well-made 42.

Pak, India likely to clash on Sept 7

The 17th edition of the Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format. Photo: AFP/File The Asia Cup 2025 is likely to be staged in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with the tournament expected to begin around September four or five and conclude on September 21, Indian media reported on Wednesday. According to a report, the much-anticipated clash between arch-rivals Pakistan and India is also likely to take place on September 7 in Dubai. The 17th edition of the marquee event will be played in the T20 format and there is a strong possibility of the arch rivals facing off at least twice, once in the group stage and potentially again in the super four round. The tournament will feature six teams including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and the UAE. It will follow the traditional group stage followed by a super four format, similar to previous editions. An official announcement regarding the final schedule is expected in the second week of July. Meanwhile, promotional activities have already begun, with tournament teasers airing on Indian television networks and circulating widely on social media platforms. Earlier, there were speculations that India might withdraw from the tournament due to political tensions. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dismissed those claims, confirming that no such decision has been made. Indian media reports further stated that both India and Pakistan will continue to play against each other in ICC and Asia Cup tournaments, and there is no official directive from either cricket board to avoid such contests. It is pertinent to mention that India are the defending champions, having won the previous edition played in the ODI format with a dominant 10-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the final. Latif backs Babar for T20Is Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has endorsed the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) decision to move on from star cricketers Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi in the T20I format. In a recent interview on a local YouTube platform, Latif expressed his support for allowing senior players more freedom to pursue opportunities abroad. "They're playing in the Big Bash and will earn decent money, and I don't think they'd want to return either. That's just my opinion. The PCB should give them some liberty to explore other leagues. Otherwise, it's fine," Latif stated. The former wicketkeeper also stressed the importance of investing in new talent. "The new players should be given a chance — it's a great opportunity, especially with the Asia Cup and other upcoming events. It's all good; the game will keep progressing," he added. It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi was selected as the first overall pick in the Big Bash League (BBL) Season 15 Draft, held on June 19, with Brisbane Heat securing the services of the left-arm fast bowler. The highly anticipated BBL player draft was held earlier today, with six out of the eight franchises showing interest in signing national team players. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan was selected as the third platinum pick, while England's Luke Wood was picked second. The 25-year-old Shaheen was the first overall pick in the draft, selected under the platinum category by Brisbane Heat. Rizwan was signed by Melbourne Renegades, marking his BBL debut and adding to his experience in foreign leagues, including the BPL. Star batter Babar Azam was pre-signed by the Sydney Sixers ahead of the official draft and was set to make his BBL debut. The franchise had used its pre-signing option to secure the services of the former Pakistan captain. For the unversed, Shaheen, Rizwan and Babar last featured in a T20I for Pakistan back in 2024 against South Africa. They have been out of the shorter format since then and are not part of the plans for the upcoming tours of Bangladesh and the West Indies, or the likely tri-nation series involving UAE and Afghanistan.
