Cedar Falls secures first state softball trip ever
Rogers Park and the Iowa high school state softball tournament will greet Cedar Falls for the first time in program history next week. The Tigers earned a Class 5A regional title with a 7-6 victory over Iowa City High. They will now head to Fort Dodge to compete in the state quarterfinals along with seven other qualifiers. Advertisement After Monday featured regional championships in 1A and 2A, it was time for 3A, 4A and 5A to take to the diamond Tuesday. MORE: Wapsie Valley ends lengthy drought to reach state softball tournament For Cedar Falls, it took all seven innings, as they held a 7-3 lead before the Little Hawks stormed back on a three-run homer by Eve Vitenese. But, according to Chad Harberts, Lexi Trueg struck out the next three to secure the win. Joining the Tigers in 5A will be defending state champion Pleasant Valley, Ankeny Centennial, Linn-Mar, Dowling Catholic, Waukee Northwest, Southeast Polk and West Des Moines Valley, who finished second a year ago. There will be a new champion, as 2024 winner Carlisle was knocked out earlier in the postseason. Williamsburg is the defending 3A champion and earned a 9-0 win over Eagle Grove. Completing that field will be Dubuque Wahlert, Albia, Center Point-Urbana, PCM, Washington, West Liberty and Estherville-Lincoln Central, who survived vs. Algona in 12 innings, 3-2. Auburn's Rayshawn Pleasant named to Walter Camp Preseason All-American Team
One Auburn's newest players, Rayshawn Pleasant, is named to Walter Camp Preseason All-American Team One of Auburn's top transfers is being honored in the preseason. Cornerback Rayshawn Pleasant was named to the Walter Camp Preseason All-American Team. Pleasant is a transfer from Tulane, where he played from 2022-24. He was listed as a three-star transfer portal prospect when he committed to Auburn on April 23. Last season for Tulane, Pleasant played in 13 games for a team that went 9-5 overall and 7-1 in the American Athletic Conference. He had 35 tackles for the Green Wave plus one interception. That lone interception occurred against Southeast Louisiana in a 52-0 win and resulted in a 100-yard return for a touchdown. Pleasant also excelled as a kick returner. Last season he had 13 returns for 449 yards and two touchdowns. Pleasant picked up some accolades after his productive 2024 season. He was selected as an All-American and the All-AAC Second Team. Pleasant is joining a defensive backfield that features experienced players like Kayin Lee, Jay Crawford, and Kaleb Harris. With his ability as a returner, it would be a misstep for Auburn not to use Pleasant on special teams. Before arriving at Tulane, he was a three-star recruit out of West Monroe, Louisiana. Pleasant was recruited as an athlete and was rated the No. 57 player in Louisiana. He only played in his freshman season against Nicholls State and Florida Atlantic in two games. His best game of 2024 was against Kansas State. In the 34-27 loss, he had seven tackles in the game. Care home resident enjoys long-awaited return to Rhinos grounds
A care home resident has enjoyed a long-awaited return to Leeds Rhinos' home ground after regaining her mobility. Marion, a lifelong club supporter who lives at Anchor's Manor House Roundhay care home in Yorkshire, shared with care home team leader Christine her wish to see Leeds Rhinos play at Headingley Stadium. With the support of the care home team, she regained enough confidence and mobility to make the trip to Headingley Stadium a reality. After hearing Marion's story, Leeds Rhinos offered VIP treatment, including free tickets for Marion and Christine to attend the match, and, for Marion, a personal welcome message and photo printed in the match programme. Before the match, Marion said: "I am overjoyed by what the staff here have done for me, I really am. "It will mean a great deal to me to watch Leeds Rhinos play, and hopefully win. "I am really looking forward to the day out with Christine. "From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much." Christine, the team leader who accompanied her, said: "It was a fantastic day and a pleasure escorting Marion to the Mighty Rhinos game. "She showed me exactly where she used to sit when attending games many years ago. "It was so lovely to hear Marion shouting for the Rhinos to win. "I was putting my head on her shoulders five minutes before the finish as the score was so close I couldn't watch in case Wakefield scored. "We both loved every minute." Marion's post-match reaction was: "I can't thank you all enough for such a fantastic day." Marion insisted on wearing Christine's borrowed Leeds Rhinos t-shirt for her programme photo, and cheered the team on to a 22-18 victory from the stands, while tucking into chips and lemonade.
